Chapter 13: Night Terrors

At 3:42 AM, the fortified penthouse safehouse didn't smell like luxury anymore. It smelled like burning ash, charcoal, and the dry, metallic tang of a thunderstorm about to snap.

Ren Lin bolted upright in his twin-sized bed, his heart lunging into his throat as a suffocating, invisible gravity suddenly crushed down on his lungs. The air inside his small assistant quarters had plummeted to a freezing, sub-zero temperature, turning his panic-stricken breaths into thick, white clouds of vapor. Across the room, thin, jagged patterns of frost were actively splintering across the white drywall like crystal spiderwebs.

Through the translucent frosted glass of the sliding pocket doors, a brilliant, terrifying crimson glow was pulsing violently from the master suite.

"Vance!" Ren shouted, throwing his heavy blankets aside.
The physical pressure in the corridor was so thick it felt like walking through deep, freezing water. Ren struggled against the heavy gravitational drag, throwing his weight against the sliding pocket doors until they hissed open. He stepped into the master bedroom, and his practical, analytical mind immediately stalled at the absolute chaos unfolding in the dark.

Vance was thrashing violently in the center of his king-sized bed, completely trapped in the suffocating clutches of a severe, curse-induced nightmare. The protective psychological boundaries he kept up during the day had dissolved in his sleep, allowing fifty years of accumulated draconic trauma to fracture his core entirely.

Thick, sharp, obsidian scales had erupted across his bare, broad chest and muscular shoulders, glinting like shattered glass in the dark. Massive, heavy waves of living shadow were bleeding out from his skin, crawling up the stone walls and twisting across the double-height ceiling like a writhing swarm of black serpents. His hands had fully morphed into terrifying claws, his long fingers digging deep into the luxury mattress, tearing the silk sheets to ribbons with a horrific, dry ripping sound.

"Away..." Vance groaned, his head slamming backward against the headboard as his eyes snapped open to reveal two unholy, bleeding pools of crimson fire. He didn't see the room; his mind was completely trapped in a subconscious feedback loop of his own destructive ether. "Get... out... the fire... it's burning everything..."

Ren’s nerd brain calculated the stakes in a fraction of a second. If Vance’s core reached its absolute thermal limit while he was trapped in a nightmare, the resulting kinetic ether blast would level the entire unlisted building, killing them both instantly. The five-foot radius was no longer enough; the sheer volume of the magical bleed required an immediate, direct physical override.

Ignoring every basic instinct of human self-preservation, Ren sprinted across the freezing stone floor and threw himself onto the bed. He dodged a thrashing, scale-covered forearm and climbed directly over Vance’s massive frame, pinning the giant shifter down by sitting right across his lap to lock him in place.
"Vance! Wake up! Look at me!" Ren yelled, leaning forward to slam both of his bare palms flat against Vance’s burning, muscular chest, placing his hands right over the shifter's erratic, pounding heart.

A blinding, concussive flash of white electricity snapped between their skin, the violent shockwave yanking Ren’s consciousness straight into the void. He let out a sharp cry as the phantom roar of a colossal black dragon ripped through his own skull, flooding his mind with the bitter, crushing loneliness of Vance's fifty years of agonizing isolation. The emotional weight was staggering, threatening to drown Ren’s senses entirely in the beast's dark history.

Ren ground his teeth, blinking through the mental static, and refused to break the circuit. He leaned his entire body downward, burying his face directly into the crook of Vance's neck, wrapping his arms tightly around the giant's broad, trembling shoulders in a full-body embrace.

"I'm here, Vance. Hold on to the frequency," Ren whispered fiercely against his skin, pushing his own calm, neutral rain-and-ozone scent into the chaos. "I'm right here. Focus on me."

The shifting shadows on the walls violently shuddered, turning into static before snapping backward, collapsing instantly into Vance’s skin like water being sucked into a vacuum. The freezing air in the room instantly began to warm up. Beneath Ren's palms, the sharp black scales receded with a soft click, leaving only smooth, fever-warm skin. The terrifying crimson fire in Vance's eyes died down, bleeding back into a clear, deeply shaken dark gold.

Vance gasped, his massive arms instantly locking around Ren's waist with a terrifying, crushing strength that nearly cracked Ren's ribs. He pulled the smaller human flush against his bare chest, burying his face directly into Ren's shoulder as his entire body trembled from the sheer physical aftershock of the suppression. He held onto Ren as if he were the only solid, unmoving object left in a collapsing universe.
"Lin..." Vance choked out, his breathing ragged, shallow, but completely human once more. "Don't move. Stay... right here. Don't break the touch."

Ren sat perfectly still in the dark, pinned securely against his billionaire boss's chest in the middle of the ruined bed. The physical intimacy was absolute, their hearts beating in a frantic, synchronized rhythm that echoed through the quiet room. Ren let out a slow, tired breath, his fingers gently resting against the soft hair at the back of Vance’s neck.

"I’m a million-dollar anchor, Mr. Obsidian," Ren whispered softly into the silence, his practical nature settling back into place as the danger faded. "I’m not going anywhere. Just breathe."

The penthouse froze at 3:42 AM.
Vance was losing it. Dragon out. Claws in the mattress. Shadows bleeding up the walls.
Ren threw himself across the billionaire’s lap and slammed his hands over a burning heart.
White light. A roar in his skull. Fifty years of loneliness crushing him.
Ren didn’t let go.
“Focus on me,” he whispered.
Vance locked on. Crushing. Shaking.
“Don’t move,” he choked. “Stay.”
