Dino-Mana: Oncoming Storm

Chapter 1 - [2/2]

Chapter 1 - [2/2]

Jun 10, 2026

“Immortality!" Rani’s voice squawked and Nicholas looked towards Rina to see her pale. Nicholas could see her mind spinning and he sighed.

“That is standard to get but yours is age stopping immortality.” Nicholas said as glanced at Perta. “At least it wasn’t immortality that slowly eats your flesh until you're nothing by a brain in a jar.”

Perta didn’t flinch at that but she did rub her cheek before looking at Nicholas, “Indeed she is lucky and the electroreception explains her reaction to me.” She leaned back in her seat to read the paper more. “We have therapists on staff to help you with your new…look on life.”

Rina covered her mouth and tried to sort her thoughts that were spiraling in her head. Nicholas stood up straight and took in deep breath, “ROOKIE, STAND STRAIGHT!” Nicholas yelled as he pulled out his very old skill of drill sergeant and the command snapped Rina out of it. She stood up straight and all her thoughts were pushed down to pay attention to his next words. “Did you bring different clothing with you?”

Rina blinked before looking at Nicholas, “No Boss,” She said and he nodded as he unhooked the wall phone from its station. He held out one finger before dialing the number to his department’s break room.

There was a dial tone for a few seconds before the machine picked it up and Nicholas drew in breath, “Keith I know you're there, put me on speaker phone.” Nicholas waited before he heard the click of being on speaker.

“Hey boss ma-”

“Cut it, Keith, I know you should be in your office finishing up paperwork.” Nicholas interrupted Keith. “Anyways, Cass, good job on catching that Carnotaurus.”

“Thanks Boss, the paperwork that came with it has been sent to your office.” Cass’ voice called out and he could hear her getting off the couch to get closer to the phone. “What do you want?”

“Got a rookie, she’s currently in suit clothing and no car. Mind taking her home to change her clothes?” Nicholas asked and heard Cass’ hum of agreement. “Lewis you there too?”

“Right here, Nicholas.” Lewis' voice, which had a British accent, called out and heard something being put down on the table, something plastic. “I’m on break but whatever it is I’ll get on it.”

“HR dropped Rina Nelayan in my lap with nothing and didn’t explain anything to her. I want you to go over her paperwork to make sure she isn’t being screwed over.” Nicholas snarled and Lewis grunt to that snarl. “Also find out who signed her up.”

“Will do, Nicholas, I’ll set up the pins.” Lewis chuckled, which made everyone on the call chuckle. “Anything else?”

“Cass, afterwards bring the rookie to the training field five, I think she should meet Debbie.” Nicholas smirked before shifting into a colder tone. “Keith, you better be finished with that paperwork when I get back.”

Nicholas hung up the phone and looked to Rina “Who’s Debbie?” She asked and Nicholas just smirked at her.

Nicholas was leaning on his black truck, a Toyota Hilux with a canopy, and he had a large travel mug filled with coffee in his hand. He had parked just at the edge of a forest area outside the city limits and waited for Cass and Rina to show up.

His attention flickered from the forest to the sound of familiar vehicle drive up, Cass’ 2009 black chevy Suburban. Nicholas stood up straight as Cass parked at least ten feet away from his truck’s bumper and watched the two ladies get out of the SUV.

His eye landed on Rina first and her change of clothing. She was wearing a pair of black flared capris pants with cargo pockets on the thighs, pair red converse shoes, white tank top, and blue cropped high cut hoodie. Around her neck was a red and orange bead necklace and Nicholas could see a shark tooth bracelet on her wrist.

Nicholas’ eye slowly looked at Cassandra Saber and his eye locked onto her light golden eye. She was a six foot tall hyperion woman with long black hair that had the end tied with a gold metal band. She had a scar that ran down her right cheek to her shoulder, a large one on her chest, two bullet scars in her left forearm and most noticeable bullet scars were the two just above her right eye.

She was wearing her standard outfit of off-white shirt with v-cut neckline, and black jeans that were tucked into calf high military boots. Cass also had a similar shoulder holster to Nicholas’ but hers had pouches on both sides. She adjusted her fingerless gloves before putting her thumbs in her jeans belt loops and rocking on her heels.

He put his coffee mug in the truck before looking back to Rani, “Come meet Debbie.” Nicholas said as walked to the back of his truck and Rani walked over to him. Nicholas opened up the back of the truck and pulled out the remote to press a button.

A quiet engine started up before a pair of red lights turned on and the engine sound became silent. From the shadows of the truck came a robotic velociraptor and it was painted with a color pattern similar to a coyote. The robot was the proper size of a velociraptor and that was of turkey, not the size of person that most media mistaken.

“The lab geeks have different names for her but we wranglers just call her Debbie.” Cass purred and Nicholas smirked seeing Rani’s face of awe. “After the first turkey we used to train catching smaller dinosaurs.”

“Which you will be doing, Rina.” Nicholas said as he pressed some buttons on the remote to make Debbie hop down to ground and run into the forest. “Gear her up, Cass.”

“Yes, Boss.” Cass said and waved Rina to follow her to the back of her SUV, which Rani followed without question. It only took a few minutes for Cass to set Rani with an ear piece with a throat mic, water canteen strapped to her thigh, fingerless gloves, and tracking device to track Debbie.

“Testing, Testing,” Nicholas said over his own throat mic and Rina perked up to look at Nicholas before giving him the thumbs up. “Test your mic too.”

He watched as she looked at Cass and Cass motioned to her throat. “Mic check,” Rina’s voice said clearly in his voice and Nicholas gave her the thumbs up.

“Alright, you're going in that forest to catch Debbie and Cass will time you.” Nicholas nodded to Cass, who wiggled a stopwatch in front of Rani. “We will do this three or four times, depending on how long you take. Any questions?"

“Will Debbie attack me?” Rani asked and Nicholas let out a small chuckle before answering her.

“Not this run, but future runs she will.” Nicholas stated and smirked. “Also the longer you stand there, the longer Debbie is on the loose.”

Nicholas watched as Rani looked blank before her eyes widened and turned on her heel into a full sprint into the forest. Cass walked to Nicholas to lean on his truck and Nicholas grabbed his coffee from where he put it.

“She is an odd rookie compared to the ones you tossed my way.” Cass said and Nicholas tilted his head to her for her to continue. “Instead of asking about how powerful they can become, she asked about the immortality part.”

Nicholas took pause at her words before speaking, “She just lost her grandparents recently,” Nicholas glanced at Cass to see her unflinching from his words before she nodded to his words. “I'm surprised you didn’t get that information from her with your charm.”

“I try not to use my charm for that…at least not on my allies and friends.” Cass smiled and Nicholas only chuckled. “She is like water, easily adjusting and going with the flow.”

“I caught that as well.” Nicholas sipped his coffee and stared out into the forest, his sharp hearing Rani cursing in Javanese. Nicholas didn’t speak Javanese but her tone and use of the words  had an universal understanding of swearing. “Did she catch on that you are a psychopath?”

“Sociopath, and even then that word is out of date. They are calling it Antisocial Personality Disorder,” Cass stated and looked to the stopwatch in her hand. “Her instincts probably picked up but her brain hadn’t caught up. How did she react to Doc?”

“Put off, though it was due to having similar eyesight as mine.” Nicholas tapped just under his eye. “She can see some form of aura and Doc doesn’t have a proper one due to her cybernetic body.”

Cass was about to say something but stopped when Rani walked out of the bushes holding onto Debbie as if she was a large fish. Nicholas would have held the robot by the legs like a chicken and thought about it, which he realized that Rani would be too small to do that. Rani stopped an arm’s length from them and she was dripping mud.

“Good timing, even faster than Boss’ time if he doesn’t use his powers.” Cass stated and Nicholas snorted from the statement. “Do you want ta-” Nicholas cut Cass off and she raised a brow. Nicholas nodded to Rani as he had seen she had a question and wanted to ask it.

“Why don’t you use robotics like this to catch the dinosaurs?” Rani asked and slightly lifted Debbie, which made Debbie wiggle. Rani easily kept hold of the wiggling robot and stare into Nicholas’ eyes in waiting for his answer.

“The same reason we don’t have mortal wranglers barehand catching mana dinosaurs.” Nicholas said and moved his free hand to rest on Debbie’s head. “In this job your main job is to protect your mortal wranglers and civilians from the mana dinosaurs because you can take a hit and get back up completely fine. Your main goal is to make sure everyone gets home in one piece and alive.”

Nicholas watched Rani stiffen up from his words before it shifted and sharpened into something else, resolve. She put down Debbie gently and stood up straight at attention. “I’m rea-”

Cass had tossed a towel onto Rina’s face, “Don’t get too caught up Boss’ speech, eighty percent of time we just use tranquilizer darts.” Cass said and Rina moved the towel from her. “While his words are true, this is starter training, have little fun for now.”

Nicholas saw Rani glance at him and he nodded, “Cass is right but don’t forget my words.” He sipped his coffee as Rani dried her face off. “Also Debbie is back in the forest.”

Rani stiffed for a second before spinning on her heel and full sprint into the forest after Debbie, while yelling a Javanese swear word. Nicholas let out a low rumbling laugh and Cass joined him in his laughter.
