Duality The Black Blade

Chapter 10 - The Monster Of The North

Chapter 10 - The Monster Of The North

Jul 15, 2026

The morning light in Shangjing was a thin, sickly grey, filtered through the persistent drizzle that seemed to dissolve the very stone of the palace. Jang Saheon stood at the window of his quarters, his youthful face as immobile as a death mask. He felt the low-frequency hum of the two blades in the corner—the Black and the Second—vibrating in a dissonant chord.

His mind was a calm, dark lake, but beneath the surface, curiosity swirled like ink. The Jurchen warlords of the Jin were men of iron and blood, yet a different kind of "friction" had entered this city. If the Emperor was dabbling in the Shadow Rite—a power that belonged to the Void—it was a discrepancy that needed to be audited. There was only one Law, and Saheon was its primary enforcer.

The Guard Captain arrived with an entourage of twelve men, their armor clattering in the silent hallway. Saheon strapped the two blades to his hip, the weight familiar and grounding, and followed them toward the Royal Chamber—the "Heavenly Quarters" of the Emperor of Jin.

The palace was a labyrinth of heavy timber and red lacquer, the air thick with the scent of sandalwood and something sharper, something that smelled like the ozone before a storm. As they reached the great doors, the Captain announced Saheon’s presence with a voice that echoed off the high rafters.

"Jang Saheon of the East! Commander of the Silent Mark!"

Saheon entered. The chamber was vast, lit by hundreds of flickering tallow candles that fought a losing battle against the shadows pooling in the corners. At the far end, seated on a throne of dark wood and gold, was the Emperor. He was a man of middle age, his face etched with a frantic, hungry energy.

The Emperor’s gaze did not settle on Saheon’s face. It dropped immediately to his waist. His eyes widened, his pupils dilating as they fixated on the two lacquer scabbards. It was the look of a starving man seeing a banquet, or a miser seeing a mountain of gold.

"Sit," the Emperor commanded, gesturing to a low stool placed several steps below the dais.

Saheon felt a sharp, cold prickle of irritation. In Goryeo, he was a High Commander, a man whose presence made generals kneel. To be seated like a petitioner was a slight against his two centuries of service. Yet, the Emperor was the Sovereign—the anchor of the Law in this land. Saheon bowed slightly and took his seat.

"The stories of the 'Immortal Jang' have traveled far, Commander," the Emperor said, his voice a low, raspy velvet. "My great-grandfather spoke of a marksman in the North who did not age. The elders in the tribes tell of a ghost who carries the night on his hip. Do you believe such tales?"

Saheon looked up, his eyes depthless. "I have heard many stories, Majesty. Time has a way of stretching the truth until it snaps."

The Emperor leaned forward, a thin, unsettling smile touching his lips. "I believe in power. I believe the Heavens occasionally cast a deity into the world of men to balance the accounts. You are a god who has decided to walk in the mud, are you not?"

The flattery was a heavy, sweet incense, but Saheon had breathed it for two hundred years. It left him cold. "I am a hunter of discrepancies, Majesty. I am here to understand why the Jin Capital feels like a tomb."

The Emperor’s smile vanished. He flicked a hand, dismissing the magisters and servants. Only the Captain, Saheon, and a withered, silent eunuch remained. The eunuch stood in the deepest shadow beside the throne, his presence so thin he seemed like a smudge on the tapestry.

"He is my eyes," the Emperor said, nodding toward the eunuch. "The only advisor who does not have a tribal knife hidden in his sleeve."

The Captain stepped forward, his voice stiff. "Commander, before we proceed to the private matters of the State, the Law of the Jin Court must be observed. No man may be armed in the private presence of the Son of Heaven. You must surrender your steel to the Chief Eunuch for safekeeping."

Saheon’s hand instinctively tightened on the hilt of the Black Blade. The weapon let out a warning vibration, a cold shiver that ran up his spine. "I am never without my iron," Saheon said, his voice dropping an octave.

"It is not a challenge to your honor," the Captain insisted, though a bead of sweat rolled down his temple. "It is the Procedure. The Law of this Palace. Even the tribal kings must leave their blades at the gate. To refuse is to deny the Emperor's authority over his own house."

Law is Law. The phrase echoed in Saheon’s mind. He was the enforcer of order; to break the local Law would be to invite the very chaos he sought to eliminate.

"Very well," Saheon said. He unbuckled the belt. "But know this: these blades are not mere steel. They are... part of a Ledger that cannot be easily closed."

He handed the swords to the eunuch. The old man took them with a surprising strength, his long, spindly fingers wrapping around the scabbards like spider legs. Saheon watched him walk away, his heart feeling a strange, hollow ache. But as the eunuch retreated down the long gallery, Saheon closed his eyes for a second, casting a mental thread—a bridge of ink—through the eunuch’s shadow. He could feel the blades, sensing their weight as they moved through the palace.

The Emperor clapped his hands, and a small table was brought forward. They began to eat, but the atmosphere was far from festive. A young slave girl stood by the Emperor, tasting every morsel of pheasant and every drop of wine before it touched the Royal lips.

"You are a cautious man, Majesty," Saheon remarked, watching the girl's throat work as she swallowed. "Do you fear a discrepancy in your kitchen?"

The Emperor slammed a fist onto the table, the wine sloshing in the cups. "It is not the cooks I fear! It is the dogs who call themselves my kin! The Jurchen warlords think I am a puppet. They think because I read books and study the stars that I am weak. They share my power as if it were a carcass in the woods. They do not understand that the Emperor is the Law!"

His anger was a jagged, desperate thing. It wasn't the anger of a king; it was the anger of a cornered animal.

Suddenly, the Emperor’s eyes glazed over. He slumped slightly, a sudden exhaustion washing over him. "I am... tired. The weight of the crown is heavy today. We shall resume this tomorrow, Commander. Captain, see to the Guest's comfort."

The audience was over.

Saheon was escorted back to his quarters by the Captain. The rain outside had intensified, drumming against the roof like a thousand hammers. When they entered the room, Saheon looked toward the corner. It was empty.

"My swords," Saheon said, his voice a flat, dangerous rasp.

"I will fetch them immediately," the Captain said, backing toward the door. "The Eunuch must record them in the Royal Armory. It is only a formality. I shall return in a heartbeat."

The door clicked shut.

Saheon stood in the center of the room. He closed his eyes, reaching out for the mental thread he had woven into the eunuch's shadow.

Nothing.

The connection was gone. It wasn't that the swords were far away; it was as if they had been dropped into a well of absolute silence. A void within the Void.

Saheon’s eyes snapped open. The "ink" in his veins began to boil. He heard the sudden, rhythmic stomp of boots in the hallway—too many for a simple delivery.

He didn't wait. He lunged at the door, his boot hitting the wood with the force of a battering ram. The heavy timber shattered, splinters flying like shrapnel into the corridor.

He was greeted by a wall of steel.

Dozens of Royal Guards stood in the hallway, their long spears leveled at his chest. The Captain stood behind them, his face pale but his eyes filled with a grim, treasonous resolve.

"The Emperor has decided that the stories are true, Commander," the Captain said. "And such power is too dangerous to be left in the hands of a Goryeo ghost. You will remain here. If you move, you will be a sieve."

Saheon stood in the ruins of the doorway. He was unarmed, dressed only in his travel silks, facing a forest of iron. He looked at the Captain, and a small, cold smile spread across his youthful face—a smile that held no miry or joy.

"You think you have taken my strength because you have taken the iron," Saheon said, his voice vibrating with a power that made the spearheads quiver. "But you have only removed the leash. I have walked the earth for two hundred years to maintain the Law. If the Law of Jin is to steal the Void, then the Jin shall be the first to be erased."

He stepped forward, the points of the spears touching his chest.

"I will find my swords," Saheon whispered, his eyes turning into pits of absolute darkness. "And if I have to tear this palace down stone by stone to do it, the world will remember the name Jang Saheon as the man who turned an Empire into a shadow."

The Captain opened his mouth to give the order to strike, but the words died in his throat as the air in the hallway suddenly turned to ice. The "Evergreen Captain" was gone; the Monster of the North had finally come home.
