It was my birthday, I was 29 now.
Me and Casper stayed home today. I sat outside in the garden, looking into the sky, rain softly hitting the roof. I was just munching, not much else really.
The door slid open, with Casper peeking outside into the garden as he handed me a letter “Letter for you, Alex.” He said.
Reluctantly I grabbed it, “Thanks…” looking at it in my hands, it looked like the one from last year, and I could feel my stomach sink.
Reluctantly I opened the envelope, slipping out the letter.
Even if I didn't know who the sender was, it was very clear that it was the same person with how distinctive it was.
It was identical, the same lengthy entry of names, the same cursive handwriting and yet again, I skimmed it over.
Only this time there were 4 more names written after mine.
I lowered the letter as I leaned back and took a deep breath before I got up and headed inside. I kept the letter from last year. I'm sure of it. I'm sure it was in my drawer, somewhere. Somewhere…
Heading to my bedroom, I slid the drawers open, rummaging around to find it.
Eventually I found it. Deep inside, frumpled up, but I found it.
I folded it out, setting them aside onto my desk, side by side.
They were identical. Completely identical. With the exception of the last aforementioned names.
And something was wrong.
Something was very wrong.
Turning around, leaving my bedroom and leaning over the stair railing. “Casper.” I called out, but my throat had already swollen up, and all that came out was a choppy mess of words that I managed to force out.
“Yes?” I heard Casper respond shortly thereafter, concerned. “What is it?” He asked as he then appeared at the base of the stairway.
“Can you come here? I want you to look at something.” I said.
He furrowed his brows but nodded, reluctantly coming upstairs and following me into my bedroom where I led him to my desk. He held onto me while he peered over my shoulder.
“What's this?” He asked. Leaning in closer to look at the letters.
“Are these the letters you've been receiving?” he asked me, looking at me.
“Yes.” I said.
He set them down again. His gaze drifted to the floor. “Why?” He mumbled, in thought.
I parted my lips as I continued to stare at him in silence.
After a moment Casper lifted his head, “Maybe we should ask the bartender about this.” He suggested. “Maybe they'll know something…? After all, they've been here for a long time and they probably know a lot of people too.”
“So I bet we’d be able to find something…” he added.
I glanced back at the letters on the desk for a moment.
“Yeah… Yeah sure…” I said, sitting down onto my bed.
He smiled as he tossed the letters to the side as he sat down beside me on the bed. “You’ll be alright, Alex.” He told me.
“I’m sure of it.” he told me, holding me. I merely chuckled.
