The Devil and The Designer

The Undercurrent

The Undercurrent

Jun 18, 2026

The Mumbai monsoon was still weeks away, but the pre-monsoon winds were already rolling off the Arabian Sea, sweeping through the open corridors of the Mehara corporate headquarters. For Tanishka, the transition from her quiet design atelier to the glass-and-steel boardroom of the city's most formidable empire was a sharp adjustment. Yet, her "beauty and brains" allowed her to command the space effortlessly. She sat at the long quartz conference table, a sleek tablet open before her, reviewing the branding designs for the exclusive standalone flagship stores.

"The lease agreements for the Colaba and Bandra locations are finalized," Tanishka said, her voice clear and measured as she looked across the table at Reyansh. "But the legal team is flagging a zoning dispute for the third site in Lower Parel. The previous tenants are claiming their contract wasn't properly terminated by the developers."

Reyansh sat at the head of the table, the undisputed "King" of the room. He wore a crisp, tailored navy waistcoat over a white silk shirt, his tie perfectly knotted. He didn't look at the tablet; his dark eyes were fixed entirely on her, tracking the sharp intelligence that made her far more than just a creative talent.

"The developers in Lower Parel are playing double games," Reyansh said smoothly, leaning back in his leather chair. "They’re trying to use the previous tenants as leverage to demand a higher premium from us. I’ve already instructed my legal department to handle it. You don't need to waste your energy on their corporate theatrics, Tanu."

"I don't like leaving loose ends, Rey," she countered, leaning forward, her analytical mind refusing to just gloss over the details. "If we open a luxury store while a legal dispute is pending, the media will paint it as the Meharas bullying small businesses. The Nanda name has a clean reputation, and I want to keep it that way."

A subtle, rare expression of genuine approval crossed Reyansh’s sharp features. He placed his hands flat on the table, leaning slightly toward her. "The Nanda reputation is exactly why I am handling it personally. In Mumbai, when people see a clean name, they try to throw mud just to see if it sticks. My job is to make sure the mud never even reaches the gates."

Tanishka looked at him, feeling the absolute weight of his protection. It wasn't overbearing; it was a steady, immovable shield. "You're very cynical, aren't you?" she murmured, a small, tired smile softening her lips.

"I’m a realist," Reyansh replied softly, his voice dropping to a lower register that felt entirely private in the massive boardroom. "But when it comes to you, and to this alliance, my realism means ensuring absolute safety. We built this foundation to last, Tanu. I don't intend to let a few greedy developers crack it."

The Intelligence Network

Later that afternoon, the atmosphere in the private executive lounge downstairs was significantly more relaxed. Maa had sent a tiffin box over to the office earlier through a family driver—filled with fresh, homemade upma and a thermos of light ginger tea, knowing both Tanishka and the Mehara brothers were working through lunch.

Zyra was sitting on the plush leather sofa, her notebook open as she coordinated with Mira over the guest list for an upcoming private viewing of the collection. Aryan (AV) stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass window, his broad frame casting a long shadow across the room. His "monster" persona was active, his eyes fixed on a secure handheld device that decrypted port authority communications.

Advik Roy walked into the lounge, his khaki uniform perfectly pressed, his posture straight and authoritative. He took off his peaked cap and placed it on the side table, his sharp eyes instantly assessing the room.

"The Lower Parel developers have deep ties with some of the political factions in the city," Advik Roy said, taking a seat opposite Zyra and accepting a glass of water from her. "They’re trying to stage a protest outside the proposed flagship site tomorrow morning to create bad press for the alliance."

AV didn't turn away from the window, but his jaw visibly tightened. "The protest won't happen."

"Keep it within legal boundaries, Aryan," Advik Roy warned quietly, his tone that of a seasoned ACP who respected the law but understood the harsh realities of Mumbai's power dynamics. "My precinct can station a division of officers to maintain order, but I want the corporate side settled cleanly."

"The corporate side is already dead, Advik," AV replied, turning around, his rough voice completely cold. "Reyansh is handling the paperwork. If anyone tries to disrupt Tanu’s work physically, they answer to me."

Zyra rose from the sofa, walking over to Aryan and gently placing her hand on his forearm. The "shaitaan" looked up at her "monster" with a look of absolute understanding. "The protest will dissolve before it starts, Advik," she said softly, her presence instantly grounding Aryan's dark energy. "Aryan knows where the line is. Don't worry."

The Unseen Coordinates

As evening fell, painting the Mumbai sky in deep shades of violet and indigo, Tanishka left the corporate tower alongside Reyansh. The private underground parking garage was quiet, the sound of their footsteps echoing off the concrete.

"You look like you're still calculating numbers in your head," Reyansh remarked as he opened the passenger door of his sleek black sedan for her.

"I am," Tanishka admitted, stepping into the car. "I was reading an anonymous tip that came into the precinct's cyber cell this afternoon. Someone leaked the entire financial ledger of those Lower Parel developers to the authorities. By tomorrow morning, they’ll be under investigation for tax fraud, not staging protests."

Reyansh walked around the car, slid into the driver’s seat, and started the engine. The powerful motor purred to life in the quiet garage. He pulled out into the chaotic Mumbai traffic, his hands steady on the steering wheel.

"Mumbai has a way of balancing itself out," he said casually, his face an unreadable mask of "Greek God" stone under the passing streetlights.

"It’s too precise to be a coincidence, Rey," Tanishka said, turning her head to look at his sharp profile. Her analytical mind was piecing together the timeline. "The ledger was leaked from an encrypted server. The exact same signature that appeared during the port clearing last week. The 'Devil' isn't just protecting the city anymore. He’s actively dismantling anyone who tries to block our path."

Reyansh kept his eyes strictly on the road, his heart hitting a heavy, deliberate rhythm against his ribs, though his exterior remained completely flawless. He didn't deny it, nor did he validate it.

"If the shadow is clearing the road for you, Tanu," he said softly, his voice cutting through the hum of the car's engine, "then let him take the heat. Your only job is to stand in the light and create. Let the dark handle itself."

Tanishka watched him, a strange, profound sense of security washing over her. She still didn't know the truth behind the mask he wore when the city went to sleep, but as they drove through the neon-lit streets of Mumbai, the bond between the designer and the king grew tighter, settling into a deep, unshakable trust that was setting the stage for something much larger.
