The Shadow CEO’s Temporary Soulmate

Chapter 15: The Public Cover

The global fallout from Ren’s economic counter-strike manifested precisely thirty-six hours later, shifting from the digital voids of the stock market directly into the blinding flashbulbs of the mainstream press.

By Wednesday afternoon, the media feeding frenzy outside Obsidian Holdings’ primary tower had reached unprecedented levels. Financial outlets were calling the Faust drone network collapse a "generational software blackout," while hidden supernatural forums were openly speculating that Vance Obsidian had finally engineered a permanent weapon to neutralize his rivals.

To suppress the dangerous rumors and provide a flawless, ironclad justification for why a normal human assistant was suddenly glued to the reclusive CEO’s side twenty-four hours a day, Vance’s administrative teams devised a hyper-calculated public relations maneuver.

"A fake engagement," Ren deadpanned, his voice flat as he stared at the digital document hovering on the center monitor of his terminal array.

He sat rigidly in his desk chair, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses as his nerdy brain rapidly processed the legal parameters of the public disclosure statement. Vance sat barely thirty-six inches to his left, looking immaculate in a tailored, obsidian-black double-breasted suit jacket that amplified his massive, broad-shouldered frame. The scent of rain and ozone filled the quiet perimeter between their desks, keeping the air perfectly warm, stable, and completely clear of any draconic magical static.

"It is the only logical narrative that satisfies both the human financial regulatory boards and the hidden eyes of the shifter council, Lin," Vance replied smoothly, his deep baritone carrying an absolute, unyielding calm as he signed his biometric signature to the bottom of the media release. "If the public believes you are simply a low-level administrative assistant, my rivals will continue to launch covert kinetic operations to snatch you from my side. But if you are publicly announced as my future spouse, any physical strike against you becomes an official declaration of inter-clan total war. The council’s archaic blood laws will legally protect you."

"And what happens when the press asks why an elite, old-money shadow dragon billionaire suddenly fell in love with a broke, fresh-out-of-college data analyst who wears off-the-rack suits?" Ren countered, turning his chair sideways to face his boss. He crossed his arms, a highly skeptical, sarcastic smirk playing at the edge of his lips. "Supernatural society is incredibly elitist, Mr. Obsidian. They aren't going to buy a standard Cinderella story without a highly logical variable."

Vance slowly paused, his fountain pen hovering a fraction of an inch above the glass surface of his digital tablet. He turned his severe head, his striking golden eyes locking directly onto Ren’s face with a sudden, intense focus that made the pulse in the human's throat accelerate instantly.

"They will believe it because I will make it impossible to doubt," Vance murmured, his voice dropping into a low, gravelly whisper that vibrated right through the floorboards. He stood up to his full height, his towering frame casting a long, commanding shadow that completely enveloped Ren’s small workspace. "In our world, shifters do not choose their mates based on corporate alliances or public status, Lin. We choose them based on an instinctual, biological lock. I will simply tell the press that your presence is the only frequency that tames my inner beast. It is a absolute truth wrapped inside a public lie."

Before Ren could offer a witty, technical rebuttal, the double doors of the private study clicked open, and Secretary Kim strode into the room with her characteristically perfect, unmoving expression. She held a sleek silver presentation tray containing a single, minimalist velvet box.

"The press conference is scheduled to go live on all financial networks in exactly twenty minutes, Mr. Obsidian," Secretary Kim reported, her eyes tracking the exact thirty-six-inch gap between her employers. "The media anchors are already assembled in the grand pavilion on the eighty-third floor. The global stream is locked. All that remains is the physical verification artifact."

Vance reached out and took the small velvet box from the tray, snapping it open with a light flick of his thumb. Inside sat a heavy, raw-cut band of dense volcanic titanium, its center embedded with a flawless, pulsing core of pressurized black diamond. The dark stone subtly thrummed with a faint, contained current of stable shadow ether, glinting like a trapped star under the white lights of the safehouse study.

"Give me your left hand, Lin," Vance commanded softly, stepping closer until he was standing less than a foot away from Ren's chair.

Ren hesitated, his practical mind suddenly feeling the immense, permanent weight of the gilded cage he had willingly walked into to save his family from poverty. He slowly extended his left hand, his fingers slight and pale against the massive, combat-scarred palm Vance held out to receive them.

The moment Vance’s thick fingers wrapped securely around Ren’s hand, a sudden, familiar shockwave of pure, comforting warmth shot straight up Ren’s arm, flooding his chest with a deep sense of absolute safety. Vance slowly slid the heavy titanium band down Ren’s ring finger, the fit so perfectly precise it felt like a custom-coded variable aligning inside a master mainframe. As the ring settled against his skin, the pulsing black diamond flashed once with a warm, brilliant gold light, permanently tuning its frequency to match Ren’s neutral Null Core signature.

"This is an administrative tracking and defensive artifact," Vance explained, his golden pupils dilating slightly with a primal, deeply possessive satisfaction as he looked down at Ren's marked hand. He didn't let go of Ren's fingers; instead, his thumb lightly stroked the smooth metal of the band, cementing the hold. "If you are ever separated from me by more than five feet during an emergency, this stone will emit a temporary kinetic shield to deflect physical ordnance for exactly sixty seconds, while transmitting your exact coordinate variables directly to my inner dragon. You are officially anchored to my core, Ren."

Ren looked down at the heavy ring, his heart hammering at a completely unscientific, rapid pace against his ribs. The corporate boundaries were blurring faster than his software models could keep up with, shifting from a cold contract into an intensely intimate public fiction. He cleared his throat, forcing his usual sarcastic armor back into place to hide how deeply rattled he was by the gesture.

"A million-dollar salary, an air-gapped safehouse, and a military-grade tracking ring disguised as fine jewelry," Ren whispered, his voice steady but soft as he met the fierce, protective fire burning in his boss's gaze. "Your corporate benefits package is getting remarkably extreme, Mr. Obsidian."

Vance’s sharp lips curved into a dark, dangerous, and thoroughly satisfied smile, his elongated canine teeth catching the light as he gently pulled Ren out of his chair to guide him toward the executive exit. "The benefits are strictly proportional to the asset's value, Lin. Now straighten your tie, smile for the cameras, and let the entire world see exactly who belongs to the dragon."
