Chapter 11:
The Fractured Mind I slammed the door of the women's restroom behind me, sinking to the cold tile floor. My chest heaved violently. It’s impossible. I buried him. There was a funeral. But the lighter. The ponytail. The hair DNA in the victim’s mouth. It wasn't a random frame-job. It was a message meant only for me. For weeks, I had been completely confused, feeling like a stranger in my own investigation, unable to comprehend the chaos around me. Now, the fog was lifting, revealing a terrifying reality. The door pushed open slowly. Heavy, hesitant footsteps echoed on the tile. "Alyce?" It was Richard. He knew it was highly against protocol to enter the women's bathroom, but he didn't care. He knelt a few feet away from me, his hands held up open and non-threatening. He didn't try to touch me. He knew better. "Talk to me," he said, his voice dropping into that low, grounding tone he used when a scene went completely sideways. "You're spiraling. What did Jake say that triggered this?" "The lighter," I whispered, pulling my knees tight against my chest. My voice cracked. "The silver lighter with the scratch on the front. The clicking. Richard... it's him. It's my husband." Richard froze. I watched the color drain from his face. "Alyce... your house burned to the ground. I was there. I pulled you out of the car crash after I called you. There was a body in the ashes." "Then whose body was it?!" I screamed, the horror finally breaking through my professional wall. Tears scalded my cheeks. "Because the DNA doesn't lie, Richard! The hair in the victim's mouth... it's his. He's alive. And he's killing people." Richard stared at me, his own jaw tight. He had been at our wedding. He had stood beside my husband as a brother in arms. The sheer impossibility—and the profound betrayal—hung heavily between us in the cramped room. It was incredibly uncomfortable for both of us to confront this ghost together. He slowly reached out, his hand hovering over mine for a second before gently squeezing my wrist. "If he's alive, we will find him. I swear to you, Alyce. But right now, you need to breathe. Let me help you." Looking into Richard's steady, protective eyes, a sudden, terrifying wave of warmth hit my chest. It frightened me. My husband might be a monster, but I was still trapped in the intense guilt of losing him. I couldn't allow myself to like Richard, to feel this attraction, when my past was still bleeding into my present. The guilt of feeling safe in Richard's arms while my life burned down made me pull my hand away quickly. Richard understood completely. He was a deeply respectful man. He pulled his hand back, his expression full of a quiet, respectful sadness.
