Chapter 13:
The air inside the abandoned Boston shipyard warehouse smelled of rust, stagnant saltwater, and old gasoline. Shadows stretched long and heavy against the concrete walls. We had followed the trail to this distant city, tracking the supposedly dead man to his new empire. My hand shook against the grip of my service weapon, sweat slicking my palms. Beside me, Richard moved like a ghost, his gun raised, his breathing low and controlled. He was bleeding from a shallow graze on his shoulder from the shootout at the entrance, but his eyes never left the darkness ahead. He was still protecting me. Even now, after everything. "Alyce..." The voice echoed from the rafters above. Low. Smooth. The exact tone that used to whisper I love you into my hair every morning six years ago. My knees went weak. The confusion that had clouded my brain for weeks finally vanished completely, replaced by a cold, sharp reality. "Step out!" I screamed, my voice bouncing off the corrugated iron walls. "It's over! We traced the shipping logs. We know about the trafficking ring. We know who you are!" A figure stepped out from behind a massive metal shipping container. The dim moonlight through the cracked skylight hit his face. He looked older. There was a hard, cynical edge to his jawline, but it was him. My husband. Alive. He didn't look afraid. He looked amused. In his right hand, he held a heavy silver Zippo lighter. Click. Clack. The sound echoed through the hollow warehouse. The exact cadence. "You always were a good detective, honey," he said, a twisted smile stretching across his lips. "Though, to be fair, I practically handed you the breadcrumbs. The hair in the victim's mouth? A little poetic, don't you think? A piece of the dead man." "Why?" The word tore from my throat, raw and bleeding with six years of unspent grief and pure rage. "Why do this? Why surface now? You faked your death! You left a stolen body in our bed! You tried to burn me and our unborn baby alive! Why didn't you just stay dead?!" He laughed. It was a dry, hollow sound that made my skin crawl. "I planned to," he said, taking a slow step forward. Richard instantly tightened his grip on his weapon, stepping half an inch in front of me, but I pushed myself forward. I needed to look this monster in the eyes. "My plan back then was perfect," my husband continued, flipping the lighter open and shut. Click. Clack. "A clean slate. No family tying me down, no badge, no responsibilities. I left the ring. I set the timer on the master bedroom stove. If you hadn't stopped for gas like a predictable little creature, you would have been ash. But you survived. You ruined the clean break. So I had to run anyway and watch from the dark." He stopped walking, his eyes shifting from me over to Richard. His smile turned into a venomous sneer. "I was perfectly content letting you play the grieving widow, Alyce. Until a few months ago. I was scanning the interstate police bulletins for a trafficking route, and what do I see? A charity gala photo. You. Smiling. And him," he spat, pointing the silver lighter directly at Richard. "Standing right next to you. Looking at you the way a man looks at a woman he wants to take home." My breath hitched. Richard’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle jumped in his cheek. "My narcissistic ego just couldn't handle it," my husband whispered, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly quiet register. "I realized my widow was moving on. With my old friend. The man who stood at my wedding. I realized you were getting a happy ending, while I was stuck in the mud building a new empire from scratch. I couldn't let you have that, Alyce. I didn't surface by accident. I left my DNA at that crime scene because I knew it would land on your desk. I knew you'd lose your mind. I knew you'd chase me across state lines." He raised a heavy black pistol from behind his coat, his eyes locked onto mine with absolute hatred. "I brought you here to finish what the fire started six years ago. I'm taking back my ghost." A deafening shot shattered the warehouse silence. Before the bullet could reach me, Richard threw his weight forward. His body slammed into mine, shielding me as the round tore into his chest. He collapsed onto the concrete with a sharp gasp, dark blood instantly staining his shirt. The sight of Richard falling completely broke the last chains of my hesitation. The intense guilt that had paralyzed me for years vanished in an instant. I didn't want the ghost of a monster; I wanted the man who was bleeding on the floor to save me. Rage took over. I raised my weapon, steadying my sights, and fired three consecutive shots before my husband could cock his weapon again. The rounds hit true. He stumbled backward against the metal container, his eyes wide with shock, before sliding slowly to the ground. The silver Zippo slipped from his fingers, clattering onto the concrete before finally going silent. I dropped to my knees beside Richard, pressing my hands hard against his wound to stop the bleeding. "Stay with me," I sobbed, tears blurring my vision. "Richard, please stay with me." He offered a weak, breathless smile, his hand reaching up to touch my face. "I'm not going anywhere, Alyce. Epilogue The afternoon sun streamed warmly through the living room window, casting long golden squares across the floor. Richard was sitting squarely in the middle of the fluffy carpet, his back resting against the sofa. He still walked with a slight limp from the shooting in Boston, but he was completely whole. Layla was sitting right next to him, giggling as he carefully helped her balance the final blocks of a massive toy tower. I walked in from the kitchen, holding two mugs of fresh coffee, and paused just to watch them. For six years, this house had felt haunted by confusion, grief, and the quiet dread of the unknown. Now, the air felt light. The ghosts were gone. I walked over, setting the mugs on the side table, and sat down on the carpet beside him. Richard looked up, his dark eyes warm and full of the same steady respect he had always shown me. I didn't let the guilt stop me this time. I reached out, sliding my hand into his, fingers intertwining perfectly. Richard squeezed back gently, leaning over to press a soft kiss to my forehead. We were finally together, and for the first time in my life, the future looked entirely bright
