I collapsed onto my bedroll with a sigh, the aches of the day's ride crawling through my body. My muscles screamed in protest, each movement feeling like I was trying to drag my own weight through mud. But despite the exhaustion pulling at my limbs, I couldn't deny the comfort that my bedroll offered. It enveloped me in a way that allowed me to sink into something that felt like rest, even if it was short-lived.
As soon as my head touched the fabric, the world around me seemed to fade. I was no longer on this strange world with its vast forests and unfamiliar faces. Instead, I was back on Earth, standing on a warm beach, the sun kissing my skin. I felt my mom’s hand in mine, the familiar safety and warmth grounding me in a way I hadn’t realized I missed. For a fleeting moment, I let myself indulge in the sensation, drowning in the peace of it all.
But, as dreams tend to do, it slipped away far too quickly. The smell of the forest, the crackling of the fire from nearby, and the distant sound of the river washed over me as my eyelids fluttered open. Morning light filtered through the canopy of leaves above, painting the ground with soft, dappled patterns. I stayed still, savoring the remnants of that dream, trying to hold onto it as long as I could. But as I shifted to sit up, the reality of my sore body hit me like a wave. Every muscle screamed, as though they were still trying to recover from the brutal day of training. I crawled to a standing position, feeling like an old woman, each step filled with the creaking protest of my body.
I heard Maisie’s soft laughter from the fire, and when I looked over, she caught my eye. "It gets easier on your body. Eventually," she teased with a playful glint in her eye.
I managed a weak smile and gave her a thumbs-up, trying to play it cool despite how stiff I felt.
Maisie’s expression softened slightly as she added, "Rhylen's already waiting for you."
Of course, he was. I couldn’t help but roll my eyes, already bracing myself for the challenge that awaited. "Does that man ever take a break?" I muttered, my voice tired but tinged with amusement.
Maisie laughed again, and I could hear the fondness in her tone. "No. But you'll get used to it."
With a sigh, I trudged over to Rhylen, my body moving as though it was dragging a thousand pounds behind me. Each step was a reminder of just how intense yesterday's training had been. When I finally reached him, I tried my best to stand tall, even though I could feel every inch of my body protesting.
"Feeling a bit sore, are we?" he asked, the faintest trace of amusement lacing his voice.
I gave him a half-smile, downplaying it as best as I could. "Just a little," I said, even though my body felt like it was made of lead.
"Good," he said with a sharp nod. "Because today we're going to take it up a notch. Ground Combat"
I blinked, confused. "What? Isn’t that a bit advanced?" I stammered, wondering if I was ready for whatever new hell he had planned.
He met my gaze with a serious look. "Not if you want to survive," he replied bluntly. Then, without giving me a chance to protest further, he turned on his heel and began walking toward a cleared area in the forest. "Let’s get started."
I followed him, my heart already pounding at the thought of more combat. We reached a spot where the ground was soft but firm, and Rhylen began to demonstrate various techniques, how to maintain a solid guard even when you’re on the ground, how to use your legs to create distance between yourself and an opponent.
As he moved, I couldn’t help but notice how differently he moved compared to Thorin. There was a fluidity to his actions, a sense of confidence that only solidified I was complete amateur in comparison. He turned to me then, his eyes narrowing slightly as he began his instructions.
"First thing’s first," he said, his voice intense, "stay calm. Keep your guard up at all costs. You need to use your opponent's weight against them, find the leverage you need to shift the power in your favor."
I nodded, taking in his every word, but when it was my turn, I was suddenly more aware of the tension in the air. Rhylen gently pushed me down, and I found myself on my back, staring up into his piercing eyes. His presence was so... commanding. I tried to swallow the lump that formed in my throat as he loomed above me, his gaze unyielding.
"Remember, don’t panic," he urged, his voice cutting through my rising anxiety. "Use your knees to push against my weight. Create a barrier."
I felt the heat of his body above me, and my heart raced as I tried to follow his instructions. My knees pressed against his chest, but it wasn’t enough. I struggled to find the right angle, my muscles already sore from the previous day’s training. His weight seemed insurmountable, and I felt like I was failing.
"Come on, you can do better than that," he teased, a sly grin tugging at the corner of his lips.
Something about that look, the challenge in his eyes, sparked a fire within me. With a grunt, I shifted my body, hooking one of my legs around his. Using the leverage, I pushed, flipping us over until I was suddenly on top of him. My heart skipped a beat as I stared down at him, who wore a look of mild surprise.
“Not bad.” he said with a nod of approval.
A rush of exhilaration filled me, and I couldn’t help but smile.
“Now,” Rhylen said, his expression turning serious again, “let’s make it harder.”
He guided me through a series of moves and escapes, each one more challenging than the last. The forest floor became a battlefield, and I learned how to roll, twist, and leverage my body in ways I’d never imagined. It was exhausting, but there was a thrill to it.
I glanced up at Rhylen every so often, noticing a new respect in his gaze. It made every drop of sweat and every aching muscle worth it. I hadn’t realized it before, but his approval meant something to me, something I didn’t want to admit, even to myself.
“Keep it up, and you might just keep yourself alive,” he said, his voice softer now, laced with encouragement.
His words hit me harder than I expected. I felt a flutter in my chest, a strange warmth that lingered despite my exhaustion. I looked up at him, my breath still coming in shallow bursts.
Reaching out, Rhylen helped me to my feet. “When we arrive at the Pool of Secrets…” he said, his tone serious. “…there’s a possibility he may not allow you to drink from it.”
I nodded, trying to steady my racing heart. "Are you worried we might have made this trip for nothing?"
Rhylen didn’t hesitate. "I’m more concerned that he’ll offer you the drink, then ask for an outrageous favor. If that happens, I’ll step in. I’ll take that favor for you."
His words, so protective, were unexpected, and they left me silent for a long moment. There was something about his offer, something genuine and noble, that made me appreciate him more than I had before. It was strange, this sense of connection that seemed to be forming between us.
But before I could respond, he interrupted.
“We should get going.”
I nodded. “Right.”
We stood in silence for a moment longer, and then we both turned toward the camp, preparing ourselves to continue our journey to the Pool of Secrets.
