The Quiet Between Us

Akhi patted the seat beside her on the bus. "Sit with me," she whispered.

Shravu hesitated, his nerves humming under his skin, but the invitation was too precious to refuse. He sat down, his hands gripping the seat handle so tightly his knuckles turned white. He was trying to anchor himself, to keep the erratic rhythm of his heart from showing.

Beside him, Akhi was a whirlwind of suppressed excitement. She leaned her head against his shoulder, balancing on a razor’s edge of nervousness and pure, unadulterated happiness. She kept her joy carefully tucked away, terrified that if she let it show, the fragility of the moment would shatter.

What is happening? Shravu wondered, his mind racing. If I misread this, if I move too soon, she’ll never forgive me.

To distract himself, he turned to her. "You never told me about your life, Akhi."

"Why the sudden interest?" she asked, a soft smile touching her lips.

"I just... I want to know everything."

She sighed, her expression dimming. "My father’s business was doing well until it wasn't. Losses piled up, and my parents started fighting constantly. Then, the real blow came—they wanted a son. They feel like my sister and I are burdens, that we aren't 'enough' because we're girls."

Tears shimmered in her eyes. Shravu watched them, his chest aching.

"I couldn't stand the way they spoke about us," Akhi continued. "But my sister... she’s stronger than me. She stays and absorbs the blow every day. I decided then that I wouldn't be a burden. I’d be the provider. I’d do whatever it takes to help, just like a son would."

"Do they give you trouble?" Shravu asked quietly.

"Constantly. They track my every move—where I am, why I’m late, why I’m early. I don't know if it’s fear, concern, or suspicion, but I’ve learned to accept it as my life."

Shravu stared at her, stunned by the weight she carried. "You’ve been holding all this inside, and you never told me?"

"How could I?" she whispered. "You left, Shravu."

"I promise," he said, his voice dropping to a vow. "As long as you don't push me away, I’m not going anywhere."

Akhi let out a shaky breath, a small, genuine laugh bubbling up. "Okay. Let's put it aside for now. Just... just stay here. That’s enough."

They disembarked at their stop, the familiar road looking entirely different through the lens of their newfound understanding. The wind whipped Akhi’s hair across her face, and as she tucked it behind her ear, Shravu felt a strange, magnetic pull. Why do you look so different today? he wondered.

Akhi spun around, her playful energy returning. "Fate is strange, isn't it? We’re back on the same road, and nothing has changed, yet everything feels new."

"I’m not the same," Shravu admitted. "I think I’m seeing you for the first time."

Akhi’s eyes danced. "I want chocolate cake. Buy me one?"

Their eyes locked—a silent, heavy moment where the world seemed to hold its breath. Then, the spell was broken by the sharp ring-ring of her phone. It was her mother.

"I'm at the stationary shop," Akhi lied smoothly, her face falling the moment she hung up.

Shravu reached out, gently taking her hand. His touch sent a jolt through her, and she looked up, surprised.

"Let’s go get that cake," he said, his smile radiating a warmth he hadn't felt in years.

They reached the cake shop just as the sky opened up. The rain was a torrential, beautiful curtain that turned the world gray and silver. Once inside, shaking off the damp air, they sat opposite each other.

"Are we always going to meet in the rain?" Akhi teased.

Shravu laughed, watching her study the menu with the intensity of a child. "I never knew you could be this happy," he said. "Being with you... it’s the only peace I’ve found in months."

Akhi turned shy. "You’ve been complimenting me all day. What’s gotten into you?"

"I don't know," he confessed. "I just... I don't want to lose this."

"Let's be friends again, Shravu," she said, her voice soft but firm. "Real friends. No more yelling, no more running away. Just us, listening to each other."

A clap of thunder shook the shop. Shravu jumped, instinctively gripping her hand, his fear palpable. Akhi laughed, a bright, melodic sound that cut through the storm.

"Still afraid of thunder, big guy?"

"Shut up," he chuckled, blushing deeply, but he didn't let go of her hand.

Two days later.

Shravu stood at Akhi’s gate, his heart hammering against his ribs. He was terrified. Meeting her family, the judgment, the potential conflict—it all felt overwhelming. He took a deep breath and pushed the gate open.

Just as he reached the door, it flew open, and he collided with Akhi. She was half-dressed, caught in the middle of getting ready. They stood there, tangled together in the doorway, breathless and stunned.

"What are you doing?" her sister’s voice rang out from inside, sharp with suspicion. She saw them—close, intimate—and her eyes narrowed. She grabbed Akhi by the arm and pulled her inside.

A moment later, Akhi’s mother appeared. "Who is this?"

Shravu felt his pulse spike. "I’m... I’m a friend of Akhi’s, ma'am. She invited me for her birthday."

Her mother appraised him, then nodded. "Come in, then."

It was surprisingly simple. Shravu sat in the living room, feeling like an intruder in a foreign land. Soon, Akhi emerged, fully dressed and looking radiant. She caught his eye, and the tension in his shoulders melted.

The house began to fill with relatives. The air was thick with the scent of flowers and the hum of conversation. When it was time for the puja, Shravu watched from the back. He felt a surge of protectiveness as he watched Akhi prostrate herself before the elders. She shouldn't have to bow to anyone, he thought, feeling a fierce, internal pride.

When the cake cutting began, the family cheered. Shravu stood on the periphery, feeling like an outsider—until Akhi’s eyes found him.

She beckoned him closer. He walked through the crowd, his heart steadying the moment he reached her side. He lifted a piece of cake to her lips.

"Let’s go back to that cake shop again," she whispered, so only he could hear.

Shravu bit back a laugh. As she ate, she playfully nipped his finger.

"Hey!" he hissed, pulling back, though he was grinning.

She just smiled—a wide, open, genuine smile that shone for everyone in the room to see. Watching her interact with her family, Shravu finally understood. She wasn't just a girl in his life; she was a world, and he was only just beginning to see how much she was loved.
