Twins of the fallen

A Home That Learn Their Names

A Home That Learn Their Names

Jun 23, 2026

Time did not move loudly in the village.

It never announced its arrival.

It simply passed through the little settlement like the changing seasons, unnoticed until someone stopped to realize how much had changed.

And within that passing time…

Two children grew.

⸻

Ashen and Virelia were no longer the fragile infants discovered beside the waterfall.

Tiny hands that had once clung desperately to blankets now reached curiously toward the world around them.

Their first steps had become confident little walks.

Their broken words slowly turned into conversations.

They laughed.

They cried.

They argued over the smallest things.

And without anyone realizing it…

They became family.

⸻

Granny Ana never once questioned the names she had given them.

The moment she found them beside the waterfall, they had simply… felt right.

Ashen.

Virelia.

She never knew why.

She never asked herself where the names came from.

She simply spoke them.

And somehow…

The world accepted them without question.

⸻

THE ORPHANAGE

Life inside the orphanage remained as lively as ever.

Ana refused to treat Ashen and Virelia differently.

There were no favorites beneath her roof.

Every child was equally important.

Equally loved.

Equally responsible for chores.

Leo complained about that almost every day.

“Granny!”

“This isn’t fair!”

Ana looked up from kneading bread.

“What isn’t?”

“You make us clean every day!”

“I do.”

“I’m exhausted!”

“You’ve been awake for twenty minutes.”

“I’m emotionally exhausted.”

Tanya immediately smacked him across the back of the head.

“Stop whining.”

“I wasn’t whining!”

“You literally announced it.”

“I was expressing my suffering.”

Will sighed from across the room.

“You suffer from laziness.”

The room erupted with laughter.

Even Leo couldn’t stop himself from smiling.

⸻

Ashen quietly watched the exchange while helping Ana arrange bowls on the table.

“…They’re loud.”

Ana smiled.

“They’ve always been loud.”

“I think Tanya hits Leo too much.”

Without looking up, Tanya answered,

“I heard that.”

Ashen blinked.

“…I know.”

That earned a laugh from everyone.

Even Tanya smiled.

⸻

Ashen was different from the other children.

Not distant.

Just… observant.

When the others raced through the village…

Ashen walked.

Watching.

Listening.

Learning.

If someone climbed a tree…

He studied where they placed their hands.

If someone skipped stones…

He noticed the angle.

If Leo lost another argument with Tanya…

He silently concluded there was no possible future where Leo won.

“You thinking again?”

Leo suddenly asked.

Ashen looked up.

“I think a lot.”

“I can tell.”

“…About what?”

Ashen genuinely considered the question.

“…Everything.”

Leo blinked.

“…You’re weird.”

“I know.”

⸻

Virelia, however…

Was the complete opposite.

She belonged wherever she went.

She greeted everyone.

Talked to anyone.

Laughed with children she’d met only moments before.

Even the village animals seemed strangely comfortable around her.

Butterflies often landed on her shoulders.

Small birds hopped close enough to eat from her tiny hands.

One afternoon…

Leo stared in disbelief as a rabbit calmly sat beside her.

“…How?”

Virelia looked down at the rabbit.

“I don’t know.”

The rabbit nuzzled against her dress.

She giggled.

“I think he likes me.”

“No.”

Leo crossed his arms.

“I think he likes your flowers.”

“What flowers?”

Leo pointed.

Only then did everyone notice.

Tiny wildflowers had quietly begun blooming wherever Virelia had been sitting.

Ana paused.

She stared for only a heartbeat.

Then quietly returned to preparing lunch.

⸻

GRANNY ANA’S SILENCE

Ana noticed everything.

She always had.

But wisdom had taught her something important.

Children grew like seeds.

You couldn’t rush them.

You couldn’t force them.

You simply nurtured them…

And waited to see what they would become.

Still…

Some moments stayed with her longer than others.

⸻

One afternoon, Ashen reached for a wooden cup sitting near the edge of the table.

Before his fingers touched it…

The cup slid gently toward his hand.

Only a few inches.

Almost unnoticeable.

Ashen looked around.

“…Did someone push it?”

The other children shrugged.

Ana quietly watched from the kitchen.

Mana…

It wasn’t enough to alarm her.

But it wasn’t ordinary.

⸻

Days later…

Virelia became upset after another child accidentally stepped on a flower she had been admiring.

The room suddenly grew still.

The curtains stopped moving.

The breeze outside vanished.

For only a moment…

The air itself seemed to wait.

Then…

As quickly as it began…

It ended.

Virelia wiped away a tiny tear.

“I’m okay…”

The wind returned.

Conversations resumed.

Nobody seemed to notice.

Except Ana.

And she couldn’t ignore what her heart was beginning to tell her.

If Ashen possessed an unusual affinity for mana…

Virelia’s felt even greater.

⸻

THE FLOWER FIELD

The open meadow near the waterfall changed little by little.

Not overnight.

Not through magic anyone could see.

Just…

Slowly.

Where there had once been nothing but grass…

Wildflowers began blooming.

White.

Blue.

Crimson.

Golden.

They spread farther each passing season until the meadow looked almost painted.

It became Virelia’s favorite place.

Whenever chores were finished…

She ran there.

Sometimes she chased butterflies.

Sometimes she braided tiny flowers into little crowns.

Sometimes…

She simply sat quietly beside her brother.

Ashen usually brought a book.

He didn’t always read it.

Sometimes he just liked holding it while listening to the wind.

One peaceful afternoon…

Virelia looked toward the endless sea of flowers.

“…Brother?”

Ashen glanced up.

“Hm?”

She tilted her head.

“…Do you think the world is always this quiet?”

Ashen looked around.

The breeze drifted through the flowers.

Birds sang overhead.

The waterfall echoed softly in the distance.

He thought for a long time.

“…No.”

Virelia blinked.

“…Then why does it feel like it?”

Ashen frowned slightly.

That wasn’t the kind of question she usually asked.

She was normally talking about butterflies…

Or clouds…

Or how funny Leo looked after Tanya chased him around the village.

This question felt…

Different.

He searched for an answer.

But none came.

Instead…

He simply looked across the field.

Something stirred inside him.

A feeling he couldn’t explain.

As though the world itself…

Was waiting.

⸻

BEYOND THE VILLAGE

Far beyond the peaceful forests…

Beyond mountains.

Beyond kingdoms.

Beyond the quiet lives of ordinary people…

Something unseen had begun to move.

Not war.

Not yet.

Not disaster.

Something quieter.

Attention.

A presence.

Patient.

Watching from somewhere far beyond the horizon.

It had not found what it was searching for.

But with each passing year…

It drew closer.

⸻

One evening, Granny Ana stood alone outside the orphanage.

The children laughed behind her.

The smell of supper drifted through the open windows.

She should have felt at peace.

Instead…

She looked toward the distant forest.

Her smile slowly faded.

For the past few years…

A strange feeling had lingered at the edge of her senses.

She couldn’t explain it.

She couldn’t see it.

Yet whenever she looked beyond the trees…

It felt as though something was looking back.

“…Don’t bring trouble here…”

she whispered into the evening wind.

Then she turned back toward the orphanage.

Toward the children waiting inside.

She closed the door.

Completely unaware…

That trouble had never been asking for permission.

It had already begun making its way toward them.
