Twins of the fallen

The Night Before The Fire

The Night Before The Fire

Jun 24, 2026

Night settled over the village gently.

Not suddenly.

Not dramatically.

The sky slowly surrendered its light as shades of orange faded into deep violet.

One by one…

Lanterns flickered to life inside the homes.

The familiar sounds of the village softened beneath the quiet embrace of evening.

It looked…

Like every other night.

⸻

Inside the orphanage…

It was far louder than it should have been.

Not because anything was wrong.

But because this was the kind of laughter that only existed when people believed tomorrow would be ordinary.

Children chased one another through the halls.

Someone laughed.

Someone cried.

Someone complained.

It was home.

⸻

INSIDE THE HOUSE

Granny Ana moved through the orphanage with practiced ease.

She closed each window before the evening chill could drift inside.

Checked every latch.

Straightened every blanket.

She quietly tucked the youngest children into bed.

One by one.

As she stepped into the hallway…

She stopped.

“…Stop talking.”

Her voice was calm.

A small voice answered immediately.

“We weren’t talking!”

Ana smiled.

“…You were whispering.”

Silence.

Then—

THUMP!

A pillow smacked into the wall.

Leo’s voice echoed through the room.

“Tanya started it!”

“I absolutely did not.”

“You threw the pillow!”

“I threw my pillow.”

“At me!”

“You were in the way.”

“I WAS SLEEPING!”

Will sighed loudly from the corner.

“Can the two of you argue tomorrow?”

Leo crossed his arms dramatically.

“If I wait until tomorrow…”

“…I’ll forget why I’m mad.”

Tanya burst into laughter.

“You never know why you’re mad.”

“…That’s not the point.”

Ana leaned against the doorway, shaking her head.

“You three.”

“I swear one day you’ll bring this house down yourselves.”

Leo grinned.

“Not tonight.”

Ana smiled.

“…Good.”

⸻

ASHEN AND VIRELIA

Away from the noise…

Near the back of the orphanage…

Ashen sat quietly beside a lantern whose small flame danced against the wooden walls.

An old storybook rested in his lap.

Beside him…

Virelia leaned comfortably against his shoulder.

Watching him more than the pages themselves.

“…You always read when it gets dark.”

Ashen turned another page.

“…It helps.”

She tilted her head.

“Helps what?”

He thought carefully before answering.

“…It slows everything down.”

“…The world feels quieter.”

“…Like I have more time to think.”

Virelia smiled.

“I like your voice.”

Ashen blinked.

“…Really?”

She nodded.

“It makes the stories better.”

A tiny smile tugged at the corner of Ashen’s lips.

“…Then I’ll keep reading.”

⸻

THE STORY

Ashen began reading aloud.

His words weren’t perfect.

He stumbled over longer sentences.

Sometimes he quietly corrected himself.

But he never rushed.

Every page was read with patience.

Every sentence with care.

Virelia listened without interrupting.

Not because she was fascinated by the story.

Because she loved listening to her brother.

Her eyelids slowly became heavier.

The lantern’s warm glow flickered gently across her face.

“…Brother…”

“Hm?”

“…Don’t stop.”

Ashen smiled softly.

“…I won’t.”

His voice became quieter.

Slower.

Gentler.

The story continued.

Until Virelia’s breathing became steady.

Until her tiny fingers loosened around his sleeve.

Until…

She peacefully fell asleep against him.

⸻

A GRANDMOTHER’S HEART

Standing quietly in the hallway…

Granny Ana watched without saying a word.

She saw Ashen carefully continue reading even after realizing Virelia had fallen asleep.

She saw the way he adjusted his posture so she could rest comfortably.

She saw how naturally he protected her.

Ashen eventually noticed Ana standing there.

Their eyes met.

Neither spoke.

Ana simply smiled.

A proud…

Almost maternal smile.

She gave him the smallest nod.

Then quietly walked away.

Leaving the two siblings exactly as they were.

⸻

OUTSIDE

The village had become strangely quiet.

Too quiet.

Not peaceful.

Waiting.

The wind moved gently between the trees.

Yet somehow…

The leaves barely rustled.

No owls called.

No crickets sang.

Even the forest seemed to be holding its breath.

Granny Ana stepped outside.

Only for a moment.

The cool night air brushed against her face.

She slowly looked toward the dark forest.

Her eyes remained fixed there.

Long enough that anyone watching might have wondered what she saw.

“…Mhm.”

She quietly nodded to herself.

Not uncertainty.

Recognition.

Then…

She returned inside.

⸻

THE LAST GAME

Before everyone finally went to sleep…

Leo quietly peeked out of his room.

“Psst.”

Tanya looked over.

“What?”

“You awake?”

“…Obviously.”

Will sighed from his bed.

“I already know this is going to become my problem.”

Leo grinned.

“Race you both outside tomorrow morning.”

Tanya smirked.

“You’re going to lose.”

“I’ve never lost.”

“You’ve literally never won.”

“I’ve been saving my strength.”

“For five years?”

“It’s called strategy.”

Will couldn’t help it.

He laughed.

A real laugh.

One that surprised even himself.

The three of them smiled.

“…Goodnight.”

“…Night.”

“…See you tomorrow.”

Those simple words drifted quietly into the darkness.

None of them knew…

They would never keep that promise.

⸻

ASHEN’S INSTINCT

Much later…

Ashen carefully lifted the book from his lap.

He gently adjusted Virelia so she remained comfortably asleep.

For a long moment…

He simply looked at her.

Peacefully sleeping.

Without worry.

Without fear.

“…You’re safe.”

His voice was barely a whisper.

“…Right now.”

He wasn’t sure if he was reassuring her…

Or himself.

He stood quietly and walked toward the nearby window.

Outside…

Warm lights glowed throughout the village.

Families laughed together.

Doors slowly closed for the night.

Life carried on exactly as it always had.

Ashen rested one hand against the wooden window frame.

His fingers slowly tightened.

Not because he saw danger.

Because…

Something inside him refused to relax.

The feeling had returned.

Like the wind before a storm.

Invisible.

Yet impossible to ignore.

⸻

THE FINAL MOMENT OF PEACE

Behind him…

Virelia shifted slightly beneath her blanket.

“…Brother…”

Her sleepy voice was barely audible.

Ashen turned immediately.

“…I’m here.”

Her breathing steadied again.

She smiled in her sleep.

Ashen returned to her side.

Sat beside the bed.

And stayed there.

Watching over her.

Outside…

The moon climbed higher into the night sky.

The village slept peacefully.

Unaware…

That before the next sunrise…

Everything they loved…

Would burn.
