Twins of the fallen

Escape Through Ash

Escape Through Ash

Jun 24, 2026

The orphanage burned behind him.

Its once-warm walls had become a collapsing skeleton of fire and splintered timber.

The home that had sheltered laughter…

Stories…

Birthdays…

Arguments…

Love…

Was disappearing beneath an endless sea of flames.

Ashen could barely breathe.

Smoke filled his lungs with every ragged gasp.

His body screamed in pain beneath the weight of broken beams and shattered wood.

Warm blood trickled from fresh cuts across his face and arms.

His vision drifted in and out of focus.

Every heartbeat felt heavier than the last.

⸻

Then…

A presence entered the burning ruins.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Simply…

There.

Ashen’s fading eyes shifted toward the figure emerging through the smoke.

Silhouetted against the inferno.

Long dark clothing.

A sword resting calmly at her side.

She walked through the flames as though they held no authority over her.

“Who…”

Ashen struggled to focus.

“Who is that…?”

His eyelids felt impossibly heavy.

He could barely keep them open.

⸻

THE UNKNOWN WARRIOR

One of the remaining robed figures noticed her.

Without hesitation, he lunged.

mana  flared beneath his feet.

He never finished casting.

SHING!

Steel flashed once.

The robed figure collapsed before he understood he had already been cut.

No scream.

No resistance.

Only silence.

Another attacker spun toward her.

Too slow.

CLINK!

SLASH!

Her blade met his weapon for the briefest instant.

Blood scattered across the burning air.

His body crumpled beside the first.

Ashen stared.

“She’s…”

“She’s killing them all…”

His voice barely escaped his lips.

“Who… is she…?”

⸻

A BATTLE THEY COULD NOT WIN

The remaining robed figures reacted immediately.

This wasn’t another frightened villager.

This wasn’t another desperate guard.

This was someone entirely different.

Three of them attacked together.

Mana erupted around them.

A torrent of fire surged forward.

Blades of compressed wind screamed through the smoke.

An invisible crushing force followed behind them.

The mysterious warrior stepped forward.

She never hesitated.

Her sword moved once.

SLASH!

The mana circles shattered before the spells could fully form.

The flames dispersed into harmless sparks.

The wind dissolved into scattered currents.

The pressure vanished as if it had never existed.

She continued walking.

One step.

One swing.

Another body fell.

Another.

Every strike was precise.

Every movement efficient.

She wasted nothing.

No unnecessary flourish.

No anger.

No struggle.

Only absolute mastery.

For the first time that night…

The robed figures felt fear.

⸻

THE RETREAT

They understood.

Continuing this battle meant death.

One of them raised a hand.

A simple signal.

No words were exchanged.

They turned as one.

Retreating into the darkness of the forest.

Fast.

Disciplined.

Taking Virelia with them.

The mysterious warrior watched them disappear between the trees.

She made no attempt to pursue.

Her decision had already been made.

Someone else still needed saving.

⸻

THE BOY BENEATH THE RUINS

Ashen remained trapped beneath the burning wreckage.

His breathing grew weaker.

Every cough sent pain through his chest.

The warrior approached him.

Without speaking…

She crouched beside the collapsed beam pinning him to the ground.

With one smooth motion…

She lifted it.

The massive timber crashed harmlessly beside them.

Ashen’s body immediately fell forward.

“Cough…”

“Cough…”

Smoke burned his throat.

His hands scraped against the ash-covered earth as he tried to crawl.

He couldn’t.

His strength was gone.

⸻

LEAVING THE FIRE

The warrior didn’t waste time searching the ruins.

There was nothing left to save.

Without a word…

She lifted Ashen onto her shoulder.

His small body hung limply against her back.

The village behind them continued to collapse beneath roaring flames.

The crackling fire slowly drowned out the distant screams.

Ashen’s eyes opened one final time.

Through blurred vision…

He saw the edge of the forest.

The same direction…

The robed figures had fled.

Taking Virelia with them.

His trembling hand slowly reached outward.

Not toward the woman carrying him.

Toward the darkness beyond the trees.

“…Virelia…”

His voice cracked.

Barely audible.

“…Virelia…”

The warrior continued walking.

Never slowing.

Ashen’s fingers stretched as far as they could.

“…Sister…”

His hand trembled once.

Then slowly fell.

“…Virelia…”

The name faded into the night.

His eyes finally closed.

The weight of grief…

The smoke…

The pain…

The exhaustion…

Claimed him all at once.

His consciousness slipped away.

Behind him…

The orphanage burned until nothing remained but ash.

Ahead…

The unknown swordswoman disappeared into the forest.

Carrying the last surviving child…

Away from the only home he had ever known.
