A Gritty Spark

Chapter 2

Chapter 2

Jun 25, 2026

Bruce wakes up, brushes his teeth, and gets ready for another boring Friday of having girls fawn over him and a movie to watch in the classroom. Besides that, he remembers how much his mother wants him to have a girlfriend. Now today is the day that he’ll get a girl.

Looking around the school hallways while leaning against the wall, Bruce thinks to himself: “Which girl will be the luckiest to be with me?”

The first girl he glanced at is Silver, a strawberry-blonde girl with circular earrings. From what he remembers, she’s just as rich as him–however she ain’t old money.

The second girl he glanced at is Gina, a bookworm who is also rich. From what he remembers, her family is old money like his, and is a bit of a jerk who’d call anyone a “poser” for little to no reason. Therefore, she’d definitely not date him.

The last girl is Darla. Just by glancing at her, she’s rather distant. In her hands is the same sketchbook, holding a cheap pencil in the other hand. As usual, Darla is always in her own little world–but Bruce can’t help but wonder what’s really going on with her. And that’s seemingly all there is to her. At least from his observations of his surroundings and peers.

Bruce smirked confidently as he fixed up his tie a little, and quietly approaches Darla like today is the best day.

“Hello Darla.” He greeted her before extending his hand for a shake, “What exactly are you drawing?”

Caught off guard, Darla innocently looks up to Bruce in confusion. For a second there, she slightly hesitated to shake his hand. However, she looks uneasy to interact with the wealthiest boy in Grey City.

Bruce resisted the urge to roll his eyes, but maintains a smile that shows his pearly white teeth. He then slides something out of the pocket of his light-caramel trenchcoat, which so happens to be a small stack of a hundred dollars you can count to five.

“Would you like some luxurious dinner?” Said Bruce in an attempted flirty tone, words coming through his teeth despite a smile on his face.

Darla’s eyes brightened up a little, “Like mcdonalds?”

“No, not mcdonalds you idiot. I’m trying to get a girlfriend so that my mom stops bugging me!” Bruce quietly thought to himself, smiling despite a twitch of his right eye.

“No, not mcdonalds. Have you been to a restaurant?”

“Yeah! I’ve been to Burger King by myself–”

“I meant restaurants for rich people. You’re rich right?” Bruce tries so hard not to scoff and walk away.

“No.. Not really. But I do have ten dollars though!”

Bruce slides his hand into his dark-chocolate hair, smirking as he leans beside Darla despite cringing on the inside, “Perhaps I should… Give you some company~?”

Darla looked clueless as she spoke without malice, “I think… Maybe being NOT alone in the real world wouldn’t hurt. I can bring my circus friends!”

“Circus friends? What the hell, since when is Darla a part of a circus?!” Bruce thought to himself, maintaining a smile despite the feeling of needing to laugh at how ridiculous it is. Even though Darla doesn’t look like someone from the circus, she’s just your average girl in casual clothing.

That’s when Bruce knows it’s surely going to be a long day.

Inside of the fast food building, Darla and Bruce are sitting together. Bruce didn’t touch his cheeseburger and french fries, his nose scrunched up and scowling at the sight of Darla having no manners. Bite after bite of the hamburger, there’s mustard mixed with ketchup all over her mouth. The onions were left out with lettuce and tomatoes.

“Oh boy, I bet that hamburger tastes REAL good!” A cartoony puppy popped out of Darla’s albino hair, then casually let out a giggle.

Bruce almost screamed when he saw that animal dressed in pastel colors with a clown nose. He looked around, only to see that everyone in the fast food place are just minding their own business like nothing was and is happening!

He literally has no words as soon as a cartoony ragdoll with red hair takes a french fry from him, “Do ya mind?” She said in a snarky tone.

“Hey! Don’t do that, it’s Bruce’s!” Darla scolded her with her mouth full of the chucks of her hamburger.

Bruce has NO idea what’s going on ever since he had decided to step into Darla’s life.
