Inside the black shadow

CHAPTER 8

CHAPTER 8

Jun 28, 2026

It is said that Kaylith has harmed people, that he has lost self-control. It is said... but no one knows for certain how much of it is the truth. Tension begins to rise within the kingdom; the nobles are divided into two factions, the people are beginning to fear, and the King's face grows heavier day by day.

King Eldarion's older brother, Altair, had never desired the throne. He was cold-blooded and intelligent, but not greedy; in his youth, he had been a warrior, and later, a diplomat. Despite the fact that he had renounced the throne, he was the King's closest and most loyal advisor, holding the rank of general.

Altair was ten years older than his brother, the King. He possessed long, golden hair; unlike the King, his hair had not turned gray with age, but his beard was completely white. His face bore scars from past wars, with the largest and deepest scar located on his right cheek. His eyes were a dark golden hue, and he stood at a height of 1.95 meters.

His superpower was "Eagle Eye."

His vision was incredibly powerful, but he was also able to see the weak points of his opponent. His power would weaken at night or in dark spaces, just like it does with eagles.

Altair’s son, Darkel, never understood or accepted his father's renunciation of the throne. Darkel is 20 years old and has lived with a sense of envy since childhood. He watched how Kaylith, despite having no power, grew up as the future king, while he himself possessed strength, studied, and fought for his country. Yet, through it all, he remained in the shadows. He believed that he should be the heir to the throne and that he was the one who deserved it, and Darkel was not the only one in the kingdom who thought this way.

Darkel had short, white hair, with two braids running down from both sides of his face toward his lips. His eyebrows and eyelashes were white like his hair, his eyes were a very bright light blue, and his skin tone was a very dark brown. He had black freckles across his nose, and he stood at a height of 1.80 meters.

His superpower was "Lightning Arrow."

Since childhood, he had a love for archery. His superpower allowed him to concentrate the energy flowing through his body into an arrow, charging it with a powerful electrical current. With this strike, he could instantly kill or deeply wound an opponent. The strength of this energy depended on his level of fatigue; if his energy was low, he could not kill or cause deep harm, and the damage would become much weaker.

When Kaylith was sent to Earth, the King, secretly from Kaylith, sent someone else along—Saela. She was meant to keep her eyes on Kaylith and protect him, since sending the heir completely alone to a foreign planet would be foolish, and Saela’s power was highly suitable for this task. However, there was something regarding Saela that the King did not know. Saela is Darkel’s beloved. They have loved each other for a long time, in secret. Saela believed that Darkel could be a good king.

Saela possessed orange and white hair that blended together in harmonious streaks. One of her eyebrows was white, while the other was orange. She had a small nose, black eyes, and a soft brown skin tone across her entire body. She stood at a height of 1.80 meters.

Her superpower was "Transparent Shield."

She created shields that resembled glass, which were used for protection. These shields could take on various sizes and forms; she was able to completely surround herself with this shield, as well as enclose specific areas in the same manner. This power was not used on the battlefield during war, as it was too weak for that, but it was highly useful for espionage.

When the news about Kaylith reaches Darkel, he immediately springs into action. He establishes contact with the neighboring enemy kingdom, sending a signal that everything is proceeding according to his devised plan and that his promised territories, the army, and the violation of the old treaty are now in effect.

The enemy kingdom begins to fulfill its part of the agreement; war is declared.

When King Eldarion heard about Kaylith, everything inside him became tangled. He did not understand whether he should be happy about his son’s power or sad that he was breaking the law with that very power. Alongside all of this, the pressure from the war and the enemy on one side, and a faction of the nobles on the other, meant that talk of electing a new king was no longer just gossip; the people were demanding it loudly. King Eldarion contacted Saela:

"Listen to your order carefully: do everything to make Kaylith cease causing harm, and do not let the people of Arnivel leave the area."

Following this, Eldarion and Vaelina began to participate in the war personally, proving that the throne must remain theirs.

During the battle, the King was unable to concentrate; with every sword strike, his thoughts became more entangled, his head rang, and his vision went dark. His thoughts shifted from Kaylith to his throne, and it felt as though he was losing both. A strike.

"King Eldarion has been wounded! Move him to a safe place quickly! Hurry!" General Altair ordered.

The King's condition was critical, and Altair took command of the army. Vaelina was also removed from the battlefield, and she began to manage the internal affairs of the kingdom, preventing the unconscious, severely wounded King from being removed from the throne.

Night came, and silence settled over the battlefield. Altair was outside, unable to sleep, anxious for his brother's life, unable to find rest. He needed to draft a plan for the next attack. Despite his poor night vision, he refused to let himself rest, continuing to use his power to ensure the enemy would not approach secretly. During this time, he noticed something incomprehensible. He went to investigate; it was deep inside the forest among dense trees. As he approached, the mysterious light vanished, and in its place, he found an arrow. While he was trying to gather his thoughts and understand where he recognized that arrow from, someone struck him from behind.

News reached Vaelina: General Altair has fallen by an enemy strike. But the truth was entirely different.

Darkel had orchestrated the murder himself, taking advantage of his father's situation and the weakness of his superpowers. He struck from behind with his lightning energy, and then plunged an enemy sword taken from the battlefield into his heart as proof that he had died at the hands of the enemy.

Following Altair’s death, the army is left without a general. Under immense pressure, Vaelina is forced to make a swift decision, and Darkel is appointed as the commander.

Thereafter, Valkaria begins to achieve victories thanks to Darkel. The people begin to see him as a savior. Meanwhile Saela, far away on Planet Earth, still does not realize that the man she loves has already crossed the line from which there was no turning back.
