Whispers Beneath The Maple Sky

Chapter 12‎: Coffee at Sunrise

Chapter 12‎: Coffee at Sunrise

Jul 03, 2026

‎Because the problem with proximity was that eventually... Pretending started to feel real.

‎Aria Bennett stayed in the dining room long after Caleb left.

‎The fresh paint smell lingered in the air, clean and new, mixing with the quiet stillness of the Maple Sky Inn.

‎The room looked different now.

‎Brighter.

‎Warmer.

‎Alive.

‎For the first time since arriving in Maple Hollow, she could truly see it, the future she had imagined when she bought the inn.

‎Guests sitting at these tables.

‎Morning light through the windows.

‎Coffee steaming in ceramic mugs.

‎Laughter filling the room.

‎Home.

‎The thought settled softly inside her.

‎Then she turned off the lights and went upstairs.

‎****

‎She woke before sunrise.

‎Not from noise.

‎Not from worry.

‎Just... Restless.

‎The sky outside her bedroom window glowed faint blue, the first hint of morning creeping over Maple Hollow.

‎Sleep wasn't coming back.

‎So she dressed quietly and went downstairs.

‎The inn felt peaceful at that hour.

‎Still.

‎Untouched.

‎The kind of silence that felt safe instead of lonely.

‎She moved into the kitchen and started the coffee.

‎Soon the rich scent filled the air.

‎Comforting.

‎Familiar.

‎Grounding.

‎She poured a cup and carried it onto the front porch.

‎The wooden boards creaked softly under her feet.

‎Cool morning air brushed against her face.

‎Mist hung low over the empty street.

‎Maple Hollow looked almost magical in the early light.

‎Like a town caught between dreams and waking.

‎She sat on the top step and wrapped both hands around the mug.

‎Warmth seeped into her fingers.

‎Into her chest.

‎Into the quiet spaces she hadn’t realized were empty.

‎An engine sounded in the distance.

‎Low.

‎Steady.

‎Familiar.

‎Her heart gave an unexpected little jump.

‎A truck turned onto Maple Street.

‎Slowed.

‎Stopped in front of the inn.

‎Caleb stepped out.

‎He looked faintly surprised to see her.

‎“You're up early,” he said.

‎“So are you.”

‎He walked closer.

‎“I start early.”

‎“I noticed.”

‎He glanced at the mug in her hands.

‎“Coffee?”

‎“Yes.”

‎He nodded toward the door.

‎“You mind?”

‎“Go ahead.”

‎He disappeared inside.

‎Moments later he returned with his own mug.

‎Then he sat on the step beside her.

‎Not too close.

‎But close enough that she was aware of him.

‎Always aware.

‎They sat in silence for a while.

‎Watching the sunrise.

‎Gold slowly spread across the sky.

‎Light touched the rooftops.

‎Then the trees.

‎Then the street.

‎Peaceful.

‎Unhurried.

‎“You're doing good work,” he said quietly.

‎She looked at him.

‎“With the inn.”

‎“Oh.”

‎“Town's noticing.”

‎Warmth spread through her chest.

‎“That's good.”

‎“It is.”

‎Silence settled again.

‎But it felt comfortable.

‎Natural.

‎Easy.

‎After a while, he asked,

‎“Why here?”

‎She blinked.

‎“What?”

‎“Maple Hollow.”

‎Of all the questions he could have asked.

‎That one felt personal.

‎Honest.

‎Real.

‎She looked down at her coffee.

‎“I needed a change.”

‎He waited.

‎Patient.

‎She sighed softly.

‎“I had a job in the city.”

‎“What kind?”

‎“Event planning.”

‎He nodded slightly.

‎“Sounds busy.”

‎“It was.”

‎“What happened?”

‎The question was gentle.

‎Not intrusive.

‎Still.

‎Answering it felt like opening a door she usually kept closed.

‎“I burned out,” she said quietly.

‎He didn’t interrupt.

‎So she continued.

‎“Everything was deadlines and noise and expectations. Nothing ever stopped.”

‎She stared at the quiet street ahead.

‎“I wanted something quieter.”

‎He studied her for a moment.

‎“You gave up a lot.”

‎“Yes.”

‎“Worth it?”

‎She thought about the painted walls.

‎The morning light.

‎The warm coffee.

‎The steady presence beside her.

‎“Yes,” she said softly.

‎“It is.”

‎He nodded once.

‎Like that answer mattered.

‎After a while, she asked,

‎“What about you?”

‎His brow furrowed slightly.

‎“What about me?”

‎“Why stay here?”

‎Simple question.

‎Complicated answer.

‎She could tell immediately.

‎“This is home,” he said finally.

‎“That’s it?”

‎“That's enough.”

‎She tilted her head.

‎“You never wanted to leave?”

‎A long pause followed.

‎Then...

‎“I did once.”

‎Her attention sharpened.

‎“What changed?”

‎Another pause.

‎Longer.

‎Then he said quietly,

‎“Life.”

‎Not an answer.

‎Not really.

‎But something in his voice said the rest wasn’t easy to share.

‎So she didn’t push.

‎They sat quietly again.

‎The sun climbed higher.

‎Warmth replaced the morning chill.

‎After a while he said,

‎“You look peaceful out here.”

‎The words caught her off guard.

‎“I feel peaceful.”

‎He nodded slowly.

‎“Good.”

‎Something about the way he said it made her chest tighten.

‎Like her happiness mattered to him.

‎More than it should.

‎More than the arrangement required.

‎He finished his coffee and set the mug beside him.

‎“You nervous about the permits?”

‎“A little.”

‎“They'll pass.”

‎“You sound confident.”

‎“I am.”

‎She smiled.

‎“I like that about you.”

‎The words slipped out without thinking.

‎His gaze shifted toward her.

‎Quiet.

‎Steady.

‎And suddenly... The moment felt different.

‎Closer.

‎More intimate than anything they'd shared before.

‎She looked away first.

‎Because holding that gaze felt dangerous.

‎After a moment he stood.

‎“I should get to work.”

‎“Of course.”

‎He picked up his mug.

‎Then hesitated.

‎Just briefly.

‎“You should get breakfast.”

‎She smiled slightly.

‎“Yes, sir.”

‎That earned a faint smile from him.

‎Rare.

‎Real.

‎He walked to his truck.

‎Started the engine.

‎Drove away.

‎Aria stayed on the porch a while longer.

‎The town was waking now.

‎Shops opening.

‎People moving.

‎Normal life beginning.

‎But something inside her had shifted again.

‎That conversation hadn’t been part of the act.

‎It hadn’t been a performance.

‎It hadn’t been for the town.

‎It had been just for them.

‎Quiet. Honest. Real.

‎And that was the most dangerous thing of all.

‎Because fake relationships... Weren’t supposed to feel like home.
