SORRY, SIS

Episode 2: Under the Table

There is a unique thrill in doing something forbidden when the person you are betraying is sitting less than two feet away.
Dinner at our house was always a predictable, exhausting routine. Maya would talk loudly about her day, commanding the entire room, while Vance sat beside her, listening intently with that patient, green-flag smile of his. He was the perfect listener, the perfect guest, the perfect boyfriend.
And I was just the quiet younger brother at the end of the table, picking at my food.
Or at least, that’s what they thought.
"Vance, you seriously need to try the garlic chicken," Maya chatted away, her fork gesturing mid-air as she leaned into his space. "I told the chef at the boutique market exactly how you like it."
"It’s amazing, Maya. Thank you," Vance said softly. His voice was deep, smooth, and grounding.
Beneath the heavy linen tablecloth, out of everyone’s line of sight, I kicked off my slipper.
I let my bare foot slide slowly across the hardwood floor, inching past the table leg until the tips of my toes brushed against the fabric of Vance's trousers.
Instantly, Vance stiffened. His broad shoulders went rigid, his fork pausing just an inch from his plate.
I didn't look up. I took a slow, deliberate sip of my water, watching him over the rim of my glass.
When he didn't immediately move his leg away—probably assuming it was an accident—I pressed harder. I slid my foot up his calf, tracing the firm, athletic line of his leg. I made sure my touch was slow, intentional, and entirely shameless.
Vance choked on his water.
"Oh my gosh, Vance! Are you okay?" Maya gasped, instantly reaching over to pat his back. "You drink too fast sometimes."
"I'm—I'm fine," Vance managed to say, his voice a pitch higher than usual. He grabbed his napkin, coughing slightly, his face flushing a dark, panicked red.
His dark gray eyes snapped across the table, locking directly onto me. They were wide with shock, confusion, and a desperate plea for me to stop. He was a good guy. He genuinely believed this had to be a mistake. He couldn't comprehend that his girlfriend's brother was actively hitting on him.
I gave him a look of pure, wide-eyed innocence. I tilted my head, looking completely oblivious to his distress.
Look at you, I thought, a dark, toxic rush of victory flooding my chest. You're terrified. But you aren't pulling away, are you?
Instead of stopping, I took it a step further. I slid my toes higher, resting them right against the heat of his knee, applying just enough pressure to let him know exactly what I wanted. I wanted him to break. I wanted to see how long his precious green-flag morality could hold out against me.
Vance’s knuckles turned white as he gripped the edge of the table. He was trapped. He couldn't yell at me without revealing what was happening to Maya, and his sweet, protective nature made him hesitate to cause a scene.
"Ren, pass the salt, please," Maya ordered, completely blind to the psychological warfare happening right under her nose.
"Of course, Sis," I said sweetly.
I leaned forward, stretching across the table to hand her the shaker. As I did, I kept my eyes locked onto Vance’s trembling gaze. I let the innocent mask slip for just a fraction of a second, flashing him a sharp, victorious smirk that promised he would never be safe in this house again.
I sat back down, keeping my foot exactly where it was.
The game had officially begun. And I was already winning.

"I spent years watching the man I loved hold my sister’s hand. He was older, completely off-limits, and entirely unaware of the wreckage he caused inside me. I was ready to take my secret to the grave. But then my best friend gave me the most dangerous advice of my life: 'Stop whining and just steal him.' She didn't know the mystery man was my sister's boyfriend. But I took her advice anyway. My name is Ren, and this is the unfiltered diary of how I ruined my family for a chance at love."
