The Elementium Wars

Chapter 2: T-859 (Part 1)

Chapter 2: T-859 (Part 1)

Jul 03, 2026

She arrived three times before her transfer. First as a rumor, then a warning, and finally a challenge. Reputations moved like wind through the Academy. Never openly or directly. They slipped between bunks after lights-out, danced in the steam in the washrooms, lived in half-second pauses between breaths. It wasn’t embellished; the truth didn’t need decoration.

The ice conduit, transferred from another cohort. The girl who had broken a trainee’s arm and was lauded for it. O-247 first heard about it in the washroom, while watching the drain swallow pink water. A boy with a split lip kept his gaze on the floor as he whispered it.

“She didn’t stop when he tapped.”

Another voice, low with a Russian accent, answered somewhere in the steam. “Instructor told her to continue.”

Silence.

Then: “Did she hesitate?”

“Nyet.”

These were just facts. Here, there was only consequence. If the instructors rewarded her, then the lesson was simple for anyone to understand.

The morning she joined O-247’s formation began in iron-grey light, with snow clinging to the walls.  O-247 stood in the third row with the others, hands at his sides, chin level, body still. The instructors moved along the formation with staves tucked under one arm. Every few seconds a number was called, and a trainee stepped out or in.

“T-859. Forward.”

He caught the movement through the formation at the edge of his vision but felt it more. A slim figure brushed past him, causing an involuntary shiver. His eyes sparked in response to her proximity and he blinked it away. She took her place two rows ahead and one place to the left. Her blue braid was the first thing he noticed clearly. The color of glacial ice where light caught deep and strange.

Her posture was balanced and composed, as though she were built for stillness and honed for violence. Even from behind, there was something hard about her. The way frozen lakes were hard—beautiful from a distance, lethal in practice.

“Resume.”

The formation moved, and O-247 let his body take over. He could’ve done it asleep, and perhaps some days he did. The drills had worn themselves so deeply that thought had little to do with them anymore. That left his mind free to wander in their narrow, dangerous circles: missing trainees, replaced numbers, punishments, a hunger that was not for food but for something unnamed.

She moved well. Not flashy. No, what she had was scarier. Efficiency. Her turns came clean and without friction, as if she had found the exact shape each motion was meant to take and stepped neatly into it. No hesitation or visible fatigue. No wasted effort.

O-247 disliked her immediately. In an odd, respectful way.

They take the gifted children young, strip away their names, and forge them into weapons for the arena. O-247 is the best of his cohort, and the only one whose lightning burns a color the world has never seen. He doesn't yet know what that means. He doesn't know what's been buried beneath the haze, what's coming for the world that caged him, or that the friends he's forbidden to make will become the people he builds his life beside, and the people he loses. A sprawling saga of found family, buried gods, and the long war between what humanity is and what it was made from. It begins in an academy. It does not end there.
