An enthusiastic voice, corners of the mouth up, careful to not slip up and upset her for being a heartless me.
We ate Mom's food at this wooden table which used to be in our old house, rock music on since she hated silence.
The clock was pressing me for I wanted to have a lone break before heading to this concert, however, mom wanted to enjoy our reunion as much as possible and if I was to show that this fact was not reciprocal, I knew I would regret it.
My words and expressions did their best to appear heartful - It was easier with all that build up social energy from years of loneliness.
Lunch over, I was about to announce heading to my room then realized it wasn't mine. "I'm gonna put my things upstairs"
I first crashed deep in the mattress ; usually, looking up would have been a window giving on a certain familiar tree, right now was only a white surface.
The second window should have overlooked on a small wood yet the current habitation was situated closer to the center of the town, fitting my mom's social trait.
"ROWAN !"
A well know shout from downstairs meaning it was time to go, my peaceful pause flashed by way too fast.
"COMING !"
This time I was the one holding the steering wheel, following Mom's indications.
Her index entered my field of view "You can park there"
She pointed to the last empty parking space, meaning there would be quite some people there - Indeed there was.
A majority of people in their forties probably ; some elderlies in an enough good shape to sat on hard chairs instead of lying in beds ; few kids running around as if this was their own living room, and in one corner a bunch of teenagers and young adults.
I followed Mom at Mary's table where were other persons whom I didn't spare a look at, lacking the energy for it.
When everyone commanded their drink...Mom said something strange "A Perrier please"
In the wait I played games on my phone, the displayed percentage reminding me I hadn't charge it after this long ride. Gladly, the surroundings got noisy and clapping hands were implying the beginning of the concert, thus I would have something else to focus on.
Raising my head I got aware that someone had been making a speech for some minutes now, a young man with clear brown hair and clear blue eyes that stared into your soul, thin and shaky.
He thanked the bar for letting them play here, thereupon he glanced to Mary with the same nervousness this one had earlier in the day.
"Make some noise for my friends !"
To the applause the rest of the music group appeared on the mini scene.
One who stood out right away, a beautiful girl whose appearance was attracting every stares that were not blind ; silky hair balancing from side to side, a shade of brown darker than her eyes ; olive skin so smooth it reflected the artificial light.
She was wearing pretty grunge clothes compared to the blue eyes and his minimalist style.
The second one that caught everyone's gaze was probably the guy with an unique street style, face hidden by a black bob which was on top of seemingly black hair, street clothes with too many accessories to describe them- His entire self felt off in such a rustic place.
The last one was outstanding by his entire purple overall, sweatshirt and sweatpants, even if different shades and some white here and there, everything was more or less purple ; I found it interesting for I too, had a tendency to wear a certain color, the one belonging to the forest.
I wouldn't have been surprised if he had dyed his hair amethyst, however that wasn't the case, the messy strands contrasted the rest by their dark blond.
One thing for sure was that this purple man did not share the warm expression of the others. His constant frown reminisced me of my old self.
"As you all know, I'm Yacinthe"
Mary cheered and Yacinthe awkwardly laughed.
"This is our beautiful main guitarist Lou !"
The beautiful girl waved to us with a warm expression before grabbing a burgundy electric guitar.
"We have our great drummer Jay !"
The head with a bob bowed then sat down behind the drums.
"Right here is our bassist Isaac !"
Purple man nonchalantly made a furtive hand movement.
"As for me, ya can see that I'm holding the mic !"
Yacinthe grinned to his left where was a scowl that suddenly relaxed. At this instant, I unintentionally grasped the dynamic of this group.
A teenager here to have fun with his loved ones and enjoy the moment, stressed but thrilled ; a passionate guitarist who cherished her instrument like the most precious gem, whom probably had put a lot of efforts in all of this ; a free spirit who dreamed big, his clothes reflecting his desire to get out of this town and play on bigger scenes ; a member who had followed his friends and alike his possible craze for purple, had fell for music and....
These were only deductions that would get clearer later on.
A riff of guitar supported by the bass.
A repetitive drum beat.
Yacinthe gripped the mic tighter and, after a soft line of a lyrics I didn't know, the melody bloomed, breaking free from its monotonous starter.
It was rather calm with a tension coming from this, if I could say, pretty sensual voice that was like a still ocean which slowly crawled further on the sand.
Jay's every movements were purposely cool, a plastered smug as showing off his handling of drumsticks.
Lou seemed very concentrated on the music yet had a relaxed face. Forgetting about the people watching, her fingers were rapidly dancing on the strings.
Isaac's deep scowl was giving me a headache, as well as his pick scrapping and scrapping in a rush, trying to keep up with the others.
I couldn't tell if they were good or not since I was not a music player, only a listener.
As a listener I finally recognized one of their song, although different from the original, which meant they were probably a cover band.
The music ceased and the band got crazily acclaimed ; they were clearly still under the adrenaline of the scene and endlessly thanked us for listening to them.
"That was amazing !"
"I didn't expect so much"
As everyone was busy reviewing this small concert I vanished to the toilet.
Emptying my bladder, I heard two voices coming from the tiny corridor leading backstage.
"I can't believe we finally did it !" A guy said loudly.
The rest was too low for me to understand.
I pulled up my zipper, washed my hands, and getting out I quietly eyed the corridor out of curiosity, which was really indiscrete, especially considering what I witnessed.
Clear blue irises fixated my still body, followed by two hazel circles. Purple was crushing Yacinthe against the wooden wall as two tongues stopped their wrestling, saliva slightly dripping.
I awkwardly walked away without a word, feeling suffocated by their heated atmosphere.
That night, the restlessness kept me awake with an odd urge, yet I did not know what this one was.
This is the story of how Rowan met the person he hates the most in this entire world.
In a period of his life filled by void, Rowan goes to visit his mom after having rejected her invitations for years. In this unfamiliar town, he encounters two soulmates with a story that lights up something within the hollow.
Going back to this town, what is to be found does not look like what once was. The music from then now sounds completely different.
