Whispers Beneath The Maple Sky

Chapter 18‎: Not Pretending

Chapter 18‎: Not Pretending

Jul 08, 2026

‎And some confessions didn't need words at all.

‎After the snowfall, Maple Hollow seemed quieter than usual.

‎Snow softened the edges of everything —the rooftops, the streets, the fences lining the narrow roads. Even sound seemed gentler, as if the town itself had settled into a slower rhythm.

‎Aria Bennett noticed the change the next evening as she fastened her coat in the front hall of Maple Sky Inn.

‎The town dinner was being held at the community hall, an annual winter gathering Mrs. Whitmore had insisted they attend together.

‎As a couple.

‎As always.

‎But tonight felt different.

‎Because after the snow

‎After the quiet confession without words

‎Pretending no longer felt simple.

‎The knock on the door came right on time.

‎Of course it did.

‎Caleb Turner was nothing if not consistent.

‎Aria opened the door.

‎And for a moment,

‎She forgot to speak.

‎He wore a dark wool coat over a neatly pressed shirt, his hair still slightly damp from a recent shower. The clean, understated look suited him too well.

‎“You ready?” he asked.

‎“Yes.”

‎Her voice came softer than she intended.

‎They walked together through the snow-covered street.

‎Bootsteps crunching softly.

‎Breath fogging in the cold air.

‎Their shoulders brushed once.

‎Neither pulled away.

‎The community hall glowed warmly ahead.

‎Light spilled through frosted windows.

‎Voices drifted outside.

‎Laughter. Conversation. Comfort.

‎Inside, long tables filled the hall.

‎Dishes lined every surface — roasted vegetables, casseroles, fresh bread, pies still warm from ovens.

‎The entire town seemed present.

‎Mrs. Whitmore spotted them immediately.

‎“Aria! Caleb!”

‎Of course she did.

‎“You made it.”

‎“Yes,” Aria said politely.

‎Mrs. Whitmore nodded approvingly.

‎“Sit anywhere you'd like.”

‎Which really meant,

‎Sit where everyone could see them.

‎They chose a place near the middle.

‎Visible. Expected. Appropriate.

‎Conversation flowed easily around them.

‎Neighbors greeted Aria warmly.

‎Several people complimented the inn.

‎Others praised the festival decorations.

‎She thanked them, smiling naturally.

‎Caleb answered questions calmly beside her.

‎Steady. Reliable. Comfortable. Together.

‎Dinner began soon after.

‎Plates passed down the table.

‎Voices overlapped.

‎Warmth filled the room.

‎At one point Mrs. Daniels leaned toward Aria.

‎“You two look happy.”

‎Aria smiled politely.

‎“Thank you.”

‎Mrs. Daniels nodded knowingly.

‎“It shows.”

‎Later, Mr. Collins spoke to Caleb.

‎“Good to see you smiling again.”

‎Caleb gave a faint nod.

‎“Feels right.”

‎The words were simple.

‎But something about the way he said them made Aria glance at him.

‎He sounded sincere.

‎Not polite. Not careful.

‎Just...Honest.

‎More conversation followed.

‎Stories. Laughter. Comfortable noise.

‎Then someone asked the question.

‎It always came eventually.

‎“So how did you two meet?”

‎Aria opened her mouth.

‎Ready with the usual version.

‎The safe version.

‎The rehearsed version.

‎But Caleb answered first.

‎“At the inn.”

‎She blinked slightly.

‎Not unusual.

‎But his tone was different.

‎Warmer. Softer.

‎“I was helping with repairs,” he continued.

‎“Kept finding reasons to come back.”

‎Soft laughter circled the table.

‎But Aria’s attention sharpened.

‎That wasn't part of the story.

‎Not exactly.

‎“And Aria,” Mrs. Daniels asked, “did you notice right away?”

‎Aria hesitated.

‎Then smiled lightly.

‎“I noticed he was very helpful.”

‎More laughter.

‎Caleb looked at her.

‎Not performance.

‎Not pretending.

‎Just warmth.

‎Later, as dessert was passed around,

‎Mrs. Whitmore said calmly,

‎“You make a very stable match.”

‎Aria smiled politely.

‎But Caleb said,

‎“She makes everything better.”

‎Silence fell briefly around the table.

‎Not awkward.

‎Just surprised.

‎Aria felt heat rise to her cheeks.

‎That wasn't part of the act.

‎Not the way he said it.

‎Not the way he meant it.

‎He reached for her hand under the table.

‎Naturally.

‎Without hesitation.

‎Without looking.

‎And held it.

‎Firm. Comfortable.

‎Like it belonged there.

‎Her heart skipped.

‎Because this wasn't performance.

‎Not really.

‎No one was watching closely enough to require this.

‎No one expected this much.

‎Yet he didn't let go.

‎Even as conversation continued.

‎Even as people stood and moved around.

‎Even as plates were cleared.

‎His thumb brushed lightly across her knuckles once.

‎Absentminded. Familiar. Real.

‎At some point she realized,

‎He wasn't acting.

‎He had forgotten.

‎Forgotten the rules.

‎Forgotten the boundaries.

‎Forgotten the arrangement.

‎And the dangerous part,

‎Was that she didn't want him to remember.

‎After dinner, people began putting on coats and saying their goodbyes.

‎Caleb stood beside her as always.

‎Steady presence.

‎Warm hand still holding hers.

‎Outside, snow crunched softly beneath their boots as they walked home.

‎The night air felt colder.

‎Quieter.

‎More serious.

‎Halfway down the street,

‎She said softly,

‎“You forgot.”

‎He glanced at her.

‎“What?”

‎“This is supposed to be fake.”

‎He stopped walking.

‎Snowflakes drifted lazily around them.

‎For a moment he didn't speak.

‎Then quietly,

‎“I know.”

‎But the words sounded uncertain.

‎Like he wasn't completely sure anymore.

‎They stood facing each other in the snowy street.

‎Breath visible in the cold air.

‎The inn glowing softly in the distance.

‎“You meant what you said,” she said.

‎It wasn't a question.

‎“Yes.”

‎The answer came without hesitation.

‎Too honest. Too real.

‎Her chest tightened.

‎Because she believed him.

‎And that was the problem.

‎Because pretending... Was starting to feel impossible.

‎
‎When Aria discovers she needs town approval and a large investor to restore the historic inn, she makes a risky proposal:
‎Caleb pretends to be her boyfriend to help soften the town council and attract business interest. In return, she’ll help repair his public image and assist him in securing a commercial contract he desperately needs.
‎
‎It’s simple. Strategic. Temporary.
‎
‎Until staged smiles turn into lingering glances.
‎Until rehearsed hand-holding feels too natural.
‎Until the line between pretending and falling disappears.

‎
‎Was this just a deal?
‎
‎Or is Maple Hollow finally home?
