The heavy, gold-leafed doors of the inner sanctum groaned as Jang Saheon forced them open, the sound echoing through a chamber that had been transformed into a temple of the grotesque. The air was thick with the copper tang of fresh blood and a sickening, sweet rot that seemed to emanate from the very shadows of the vaulted ceiling.
The floor was a mosaic of silk and carnage. The Emperor’s concubines, the same girls who had whispered to Saheon in the baths, lay scattered across the polished marble. Their bodies were positioned like decorative offerings, leading a trail of crimson toward the upper dais. There, standing amidst the ruins of his own humanity, was the Emperor. He gripped the Second Blade—Saheon’s Shadow Blade—still wrapped in its muzzled black leather. The blade vibrated in his unpracticed hand, a low, predatory hum that seemed to be feeding on the lingering terror in the room.
As Saheon approached, his youthful face a mask of absolute, light-drinking cold, the Emperor lunged for the last surviving girl. He caught her by the hair, dragging her upward and pressing the leather-wrapped steel against her throat.
"Stay back, ghost!" the Emperor shrieked. His crown was crooked, his robes stained. "Do you not care for the lives of these blossoms? Do you not wonder what sorcery I have cultivated in the dark? I am touching the hem of the Gods!"
Saheon didn’t stop. His boots made a wet, rhythmic sound on the marble. His eyes were fixed on the weapons. "Give me my swords. Now."
"I will erase you!" the Emperor roared, his voice cracking with a frantic, desperate ego. "I have studied the whispers! I will use the darkest magic known to mankind to send you back to the void that birthed you!"
Saheon came to a halt in the center of the room, surrounded by the dead. He looked at the Emperor with a chilling, detached curiosity. "Do it then," he said, his voice a low vibration that made the candles flicker. "If you think the iron answers to a man of clay, show me your power."
The Emperor snarled and shoved the girl aside, letting her collapse into a heap of trembling silk. He stepped down the first few tiers of the dais and pointed the Second Blade at Saheon’s heart.
Saheon let out a short, amused laugh—the sound of ice cracking. But the laughter died instantly as the Second Blade reacted. An oily, tar-black substance began to leak from beneath the leather wrappings. It didn't drip like water; it moved like a living parasite, coiling down the blade and onto the floor.
The oily shadow slithered across the marble, seeking the nearest vessel. It surged into the corpse of one of the fallen girls. Her body jerked with a violent, bone-snapping crack. Her limbs elongated, twisting at impossible angles until she resembled a massive, multi-legged spider with a human face. The ghoul let out a piercing, unnatural shriek and launched itself at Saheon.
Without a flicker of hesitation, Saheon caught the creature in mid-air. He grabbed its spindly, shadow-warped arms and snapped them like dry kindling. He kicked the beast back, sending it skidding across the floor, and as it tried to rise, he drove its own jagged, broken arm-bones into its face. The ghoul dissolved into a puddle of black sludge, the Shadow Rite failing as Saheon’s presence overwhelmed the weak necromancy.
The Emperor laughed, a high-pitched, hysterical sound. "You see? I can command the night itself! Do you really wish to fight this power, Goryeo?"
"I was going to ask you the same thing," Saheon replied.
He didn't lung. Instead, he simply opened his hand toward the lead-lined box in the corner where the Black Blade had been sealed. The box rattled violently, the wood splintering as the Black Blade tore through its prison. The sword flew through the air like a loyal hound, landing with a heavy, magnetic thud in Saheon’s grip.
The Emperor’s face went white. He realized in that moment that the blade wasn't just a tool Saheon used; it was an extension of his own nervous system, a part of his very soul.
The Emperor’s hand began to tremble. It wasn't fear—not yet. It was the Second Blade. The muzzled sword began to vibrate with such intensity that it lifted the Emperor's arm involuntarily. Saheon raised his left hand, and the Second Blade tore itself free from the Emperor’s grasp, flying back to its rightful owner.
Saheon stood now with both swords of the Void in his hands. To the Emperor’s eyes, the Goryeo commander seemed to grow, his silhouette stretching ten meters tall, casting a shadow that swallowed the entire sanctum. He looked like the universe itself had taken a human shape to deliver a verdict.
The Emperor’s knees hit the marble. "Mercy," he wheezed, pressing his forehead to the stone. "Spare me, Deity. I am but a student of the dark."
Saheon sheathed the blades, the room’s atmosphere stabilizing as the "friction" subsided. "I do not care to bring down your regime," Saheon said, his voice flat. "I have no interest in the politics of the Jin. But I want the story. I want to know where a man of clay learned the whispers of the Void."
The Emperor raised himself with a pathetic attempt at dignity, returning to his throne like a scolded child. He looked at Saheon, who stood several meters away, refusing to come any closer to the rot of the dais.
"When I was a boy," the Emperor began, his voice distant, "granted power by the Jurchen warlords, the silence began to speak. Whispers from the corners of the room. At first, I thought it was madness. But the shadows grew louder. They taught me things. They told me that the world was a lie built on light."
He looked toward the altar behind his throne and retrieved a heavy volume. It was a book laced with blackened leather and written in shimmering, ancient gold leaf. "This is the Book of the Shadow Rite. It was brought to me by a leader of the Jurchen tribes—the previous owner of that blade you carry. He told me to study it. To learn every spell within its pages."
Saheon’s eyes narrowed. "Could you read it?"
"No," the Emperor spat in frustration. "I brought linguists, scholars, sages from every corner of the earth. They saw only gibberish. I thought... I thought if I held the blade of the man who gave it to me, the words would unlock. I recognized the steel on your hip, Commander. I thought you were him, come back to me."
"That man was my brother," Saheon said.
The Emperor’s eyes lit up with a sickening excitement. "Your brother! Then he can teach me! Where is he? When will he return?"
"My brother is no longer with the living," Saheon replied. "The only way to reach him now is to speak to the dead."
The Emperor let out a visceral, animalistic scream of rage. He threw himself onto the floor, clawing at the stone in a display of grief that caught even Saheon off guard. "Bring him back!" the Emperor begged, clutching at Saheon’s boots. "Bring him back to life! I will give you the gold of the mountains! I will give you the Empire! Just teach me the Rite! Give me the power to command the dark!"
Saheon looked down at the weeping sovereign and felt a profound, cold clarity. He saw how the hunger for power could turn a man into a hollow shell, a vessel for the very darkness that would eventually consume him.
This magic is not for the world of Men, Saheon thought. If the Law is to survive, the power must end with me. I must be the final seal.
"This power is beyond you," Saheon said, turning his back on the throne. "You are an Emperor of a kingdom of dust. That is all you will ever be."
"I am not a normal man!" the Emperor shrieked behind him. "I am the Son of Heaven! I am the richest man in the land!"
Saheon paused at the door, looking back over his shoulder. "If you hold such power, then your Jurchen warlords should not be a threat to you. But you are still afraid, are you not?"
"Get out!" the Emperor wailed. "Leave my kingdom! If I see your face again, I will have your head on a pike!"
Saheon didn't reply. He walked through the palace, reclaimed his armor, and mounted his horse at the city gates. As he rode away from Shangjing, he felt the two blades at his hip—one feeding him life, the other offering him the army of the dead. He was the most powerful man in the world, and he was utterly alone.
Back in the inner sanctum, the Emperor slowly stood up. He wiped the tears and blood from his face and walked toward the altar. He opened the pages of the ancient Book of the Shadow Rite.
"Well, Commander," the Emperor whispered, his eyes gleaming with a newfound, jagged insanity. "If you are not going to teach me... then I know someone who might."
He looked into the deepest shadow of the room, and the shadow whispered back.
