Episode 7: Pure White
I spent three agonizing days staring at my phone, waiting for Roxy to text me the match that would burn Vance’s perfect life to the ground. I wanted a criminal record. A hidden ex-girlfriend. A college scandal. Anything.
When my phone finally buzzed, I grabbed it so fast I almost cracked the screen.
Roxy [4:12 PM]: Ren... I’m so sorry. My cousin went through everything. State College records, old student forums, local police databases. Literally everything.
Ren [4:13 PM]: And? What did she find?
Roxy [4:13 PM]: Nothing. The guy is a literal saint. He graduated top of his class, won a community service award, and his old roommates said he used to bake them cookies during finals week. He doesn't even have a parking ticket.
I stared at the glowing screen, my jaw clenching so hard it ached.
Nothing. He was completely, frustratingly pure. A flawless white sheet with not a single drop of ink on it.
"Damn it!" I hissed, slamming my phone face-down onto my mattress.
How was I supposed to blackmail a man who didn't have a single secret? How was I supposed to break a green flag that refused to bend?
The heavy thud of the front door echoing from downstairs cut through my spiral. Maya’s voice drifted up the stairs, loud and commanding as usual. "Vance, babe, can you carry these heavy boxes up to the attic for me? They're way too heavy!"
"On it, Maya," his deep, smooth voice replied.
A dark, intoxicating realization washed over me as I listened to his steady footsteps moving toward the attic stairs. Vance didn't have any skeletons in his closet. He didn't have a dark past.
Which meant if I wanted to ruin him... I would have to be his very first sin. I would have to be the one to stain his perfect record.
I stood up, adjusting the collar of my oversized shirt so it slipped slightly off my shoulder, exposing my collarbone. I let my hair fall messily into my eyes, bringing back that soft, submissive look he liked to pretend he was immune to.
If he wanted to play the flawless protector, let's see how he protects himself against me when there's nowhere left to run.
I quietly slipped out of my room and climbed the narrow, creaking wooden steps ahead of him. The attic was dusty, dimly lit by a single grim window, and crammed with old furniture. It was completely isolated from the rest of the house.
Vance stepped up into the room a moment later, carrying a heavy plastic bin. He paused, his dark gray eyes narrowing the moment he saw me leaning against a stack of trunks.
"Ren? What are you doing up here?" he asked, his voice guarded but still carrying that careful, protective tone.
I didn't answer. Instead, I stepped past him, reached out, and slammed the heavy attic door shut.
Click.
I turned the manual deadbolt, locking us inside. The heavy sound echoed through the cramped space. I slid the key down the front of my shirt, letting it disappear against my chest.
Vance set the heavy bin down with a dull thud. The green-flag mask didn't slip, but his jaw clenched, and his shoulders went entirely rigid. The dim attic light caught the sharp angles of his face as he looked at the locked door, then back to me.
"Ren," Vance said, his voice dropping into that deep, warning register that always made my knees go weak. "Unlock the door. Maya is right downstairs."
"Maya is watching a movie in the living room with her headphones on, Vance. She can't hear us," I whispered, taking a slow, shameless step toward him. The red-flag energy inside me was burning hot. "You said you were testing me the other day. You said you wanted to see how far I would go. Well... let's find out."
I backed him up against a stack of old boxes, looking up at him with pure, unhinged submission. "We're trapped up here, Vance. Just you, me, and your perfect, spotless record. Let's see how long it stays clean."

"I spent years watching the man I loved hold my sister’s hand. He was older, completely off-limits, and entirely unaware of the wreckage he caused inside me. I was ready to take my secret to the grave. But then my best friend gave me the most dangerous advice of my life: 'Stop whining and just steal him.' She didn't know the mystery man was my sister's boyfriend. But I took her advice anyway. My name is Ren, and this is the unfiltered diary of how I ruined my family for a chance at love."
