Chapter Seven
A Door Destiny Had Been Holding Open
The convoy remained still.
Luxury SUVs lined both sides of the road, their polished black bodies reflecting the afternoon sun.
Pedestrians stopped to watch.
Neighbors peeped through their windows.
Even Damilola and Tunde, who had been standing by the doorway, stared in confusion.
"Who could that be?" Damilola whispered.
The rear door of the limousine slowly opened.
A young woman stepped out gracefully.
She was dressed in a simple but elegant navy-blue suit, her confidence speaking louder than her appearance.
Two security officers respectfully stood behind her.
She walked directly toward Idris.
"Good afternoon, Mr. Idris Afolayan."
Idris looked surprised.
"I'm sorry... have we met before?"
The woman smiled.
"My name is Zainab Bello."
The name sounded familiar.
Then it clicked.
Bello Group.
One of the largest business empires in Africa.
The company that had tried to recruit him several times over the years.
"I remember now."
"I'm glad you do."
She stretched out her hand.
"It's an honor to finally meet you in person."
Idris shook her hand politely.
"The honor is mine."
From the doorway, Tunde frowned.
"What is the daughter of Alhaji Bashir Bello doing here?"
Damilola remained speechless.
•••
Zainab looked at Idris with sincere concern.
"I heard what happened."
"I'm sorry."
Idris smiled faintly.
"So the whole country knows already."
"The news spread quickly."
He sighed.
"They called me a thief."
"I don't."
Those three words caught him off guard.
"I've spent years studying your work, Mr. Afolayan."
"Your integrity is the reason Bello Group kept sending you employment offers."
"I rejected every one."
"I know."
"You were loyal."
She smiled warmly.
"And loyalty is rare."
For the first time in months...
Someone believed him.
Without asking for evidence.
Without judging him.
Simply because they knew his character.
•••
Zainab nodded toward one of her assistants.
The man handed Idris a neatly sealed envelope.
"What is this?"
"An appointment letter."
Idris slowly opened it.
His eyes widened.
GENERAL MANAGER
BELLO GROUP OF COMPANIES
His hands began to shake.
"This..."
He looked up.
"This can't be real."
"It is."
"I've been blacklisted."
"By one company."
She smiled confidently.
"Not by us."
Idris continued reading.
His heart nearly stopped.
Monthly Salary: ₦20,000,000
Official Residence: Luxury Villa
Official Vehicle: Armored Rolls-Royce Cullinan
Twenty Percent Executive Equity Shares
He looked at Zainab in complete disbelief.
"Why?"
"Because talent should never be wasted."
"And because my father always says one sentence."
She smiled.
"Never judge a man by the accusations against him. Judge him by the life he lived before those accusations appeared."
Tears gathered in Idris's eyes.
No one had shown him kindness since he lost everything.
•••
At that moment, Alhaji Bashir Bello himself stepped out of the limousine.
Despite being one of the richest men in Nigeria, he carried himself with remarkable humility.
He walked toward Idris.
"My son."
Idris quickly greeted him respectfully.
"Good afternoon, sir."
Alhaji Bashir smiled.
"I've wanted you in my company for almost four years."
"I'm honored, sir."
"I watched your interview after CrestPoint dismissed you."
Idris looked surprised.
"You did?"
"I did."
"You never defended yourself."
"Because honest men don't need to shout."
The billionaire nodded with admiration.
"Exactly."
He placed a gentle hand on Idris's shoulder.
"My company doesn't need perfect people."
"It needs trustworthy people."
"And I believe you are one."
Idris lowered his head.
"Thank you, sir."
"No."
Alhaji Bashir replied.
"Thank Allah."
"Sometimes He closes one door because someone has locked themselves inside the wrong building."
•••
Standing a few meters away, Damilola could no longer hide her shock.
She quietly walked closer.
"Idris..."
He turned.
For the first time in months...
She spoke his name softly.
"I... I didn't know..."
Before she could finish, Zainab politely interrupted.
"Excuse me."
She looked at Idris.
"Our meeting is important."
"If you're ready, we'd like to take you to Bello Group Headquarters."
Idris looked once at the house he had called home.
Then at the people who had thrown him away.
Without anger...
Without bitterness...
He nodded.
"I'm ready."
One of the security officers collected his travel bag.
Another opened the limousine door.
As Idris entered the luxurious vehicle, Tunde clenched his fists.
"This isn't over."
The convoy slowly pulled away.
Damilola watched until the last vehicle disappeared from sight.
For the first time...
A strange feeling settled in her heart.
Not love.
Not happiness.
Regret.
The man she had called worthless...
Had just been welcomed by the most powerful business family in the country.
And deep inside her heart...
A quiet voice whispered,
"What if I made the biggest mistake of my life?"
Far ahead, seated inside the limousine, Idris looked out the window.
He wasn't smiling because he had become rich again.
He was smiling because, after months of darkness...
A single ray of hope had finally found him.
His comeback had begun.
