Lyon and Neave accompanied Rabbit down the path up until they exited the forest.
“Just keep on this road and you won’t be able to miss it.” Lyon pointed down the road going south before heading east with Neave.
Rabbit looked at the piece of paper in his hand. Despite the effect on his life he couldn’t read a word of it. Did the squiggly lines on this actually put him in 2 million G in debt? How can a piece of paper have that power? And he’d be able to gain these 2 million G from doing jobs in the nearest town. Rabbit wasn’t sure how that would work and he also didn’t know exactly what G was in the first place.
When he gets into the town he’ll have to find someone who could make sense of this paper. There’s certainly someone who could read it there.
As the sun set behind him Rabbit’s legs were going numb as he trudged along the path. Taking another step he collapsed in exhaustion.
Waking up the first thing Rabbit sees is a campfire and the second thing he notices is the rope tied around his wrists.
“There wasn’t a single thing on that guy?” A gruff voice said behind him.
“Nope, just this contract.” A softer voice replied.
“Can we get something out of it?”
“Debt.”
“Debt?”
“2 million G of debt, oh and a piece of land in the forest.”
Rabbit moved his head and tried to say he didn’t know what he signed but the cloth tied around his mouth prevented that.
“The kid’s up,” The gruff voice said and an imposing frame walked in front of him. “Won’t you thank us for saving you. You had passed out right on the road; anyone could have found you. I’d say you’re lucky we did.”
Rabbit made a muffled confused noise.
“We’re honorable bandits, steal from the rich and give to ourselves types.” The large man sat down next to Rabbit and put his arm over Rabbit’s shoulder. “You could have been found by some slave traders or organ sellers. Or worse, elves.”
“Elves?” Rabbit thought not feeling as lucky as the man says he is.
“But don’t worry we’ll be sure to keep you nice and safe until we make it back to our camp.”
Rabbit looked at the man with suspicion.
“Why are you giving me that look, I promise in my honor that we won’t do anything once we get there. You’ll be free to go.”
A smaller man walked into view of Rabbit and looked the tied up man in the eyes. “Boss, I’m not sure about this kid. His eyes aren’t right.”
“They’re just two different colors, that’s not too big of a deal.”
“No it’s the red one, it looks lifeless. Maybe we should just set him loose, I don’t think anything good will come from keeping him here.”
“Didn’t know you were such a coward, Key.” The gruff man laughed.
“I’m not a coward, you’re just an idiot.” Key said walking away from Rabbit.
“What, you think he’s an elf.”
“No, not that. But he sure as hell ain’t human.” Key grumbled, “He doesn’t have the features of an elf.”
“Maybe he’s just a big fairy, he has that look.”
“I hope not, but that might be the best option.” Key stared out into the distance, “Though we could just ask him, I guess.”
“But where’s the fun in that, if we ungag him he’ll be able to curse us.”
Key sighed and didn’t push his boss anymore leaving Rabbit confused. What in the world were they talking about? He pulled against his bonds trying to break free with no success. Getting frustrated tears started to well in his eye causing his vision to cloud.
The gruff man yawned loudly, “Why am I tired suddenly.” was the last thing he said before he leaned forward and fell asleep.
“Boss?” Key walked over to his boss but collapsed as he got near. Much to Rabbit’s confusion.
After recovering from the shock, Rabbit quickly found a knife and undid his bonds and removed the cloth from his mouth. Shaking his head he noticed small whitish particles fall from his red hair and had no idea what they were. However, he did not have the time to dwell on it as he fled from the small campsite. He needed to get back to the road, or to any town at this point.
