The carriage door is swept open, and the overwhelming aura of the man outside gush into the cramped carriage, stealing the very air from my lungs.
Slowly, he steps closer to me.
Before I can even process his imposing shadow, he reaches out. His large, gloved hand cradles mine with a gentleness that completely contradicts his terrifying presence. He lowers his head, and his lips press softly against the back of my hand.
A sudden, shiver rushes over my entire body.
It is my first kiss... my very first kiss, even though it is only on my hand.
In my past life, my hands knew only the cold iron of a hilt and the warm splatter of enemy blood. No man had ever dared to approach me, let alone touch me with such reverence. I look up, trapped under the spell of his appearance. He possesses midnight-black hair that frames a sharply sculpted, devastatingly handsome face, and his broad shoulders seem capable of carrying the weight of the entire world. Yet, as I look down at where our skin meets, I notice something that makes my heart skip a beat.
His hand is heavily calloused, bearing the unmistakable scars of a master swordsman. It is just like mine.
My chest heaves as my body begins behaving entirely differently. My pulse races frantically, and a strange, suffocating warmth spreads beneath my skin. I have never felt like this before in my entire life not even in the heat of the most desperate battles.
"Welcome, my Empress," his deep, velvet voice rumbles, vibrating straight through my soul.
The weight of his words snaps me back to reality. Empress? I am merely a political bride from a defeated faction. Fearful that he might hear the chaotic pounding of my heart, I quickly pull my hand off his grip.
Gathering my composure, I sink into a flawless, elegant curtsy, tilting my head just enough to maintain the dignity of my bloodline.
"I greet you, Your Imperial Majesty," I announce, my voice steady despite the storm inside me. "I am Charlotte von Arcadia."
A dark, dangerously mesmerizing smile tugs at the corners of his lips as he steps closer, refusing to let the distance remain between us. His piercing eyes lock onto mine, burning with an unyielding, possessive intensity.
"Soon to be my Empress," he corrects softly, his tone holding the absolute finality of a divine decree.
I stare at him, completely frozen. As the imperial guards wrape heavy silk banners around us and the border gates swing wide, a realization hits me. I had prepared myself for a cold exile, an unwelcoming palace, and a husband who would view me as a suspicious enemy commander.
I truly wasn't expecting this type of welcome.
"I wasn't expecting this type of welcome, Your Majesty," I say, my voice adopting the cool, measured tone of a proper diplomat. I tilt my chin up, masking my inner turmoil behind a mask of pride. "You came yourself to pick me up at the border. Did you think I would do something disgraceful to your empire before even reaching the capital?"
It is a bold question, meant to test his boundaries. Why did he even come here? There is absolutely no political reason for an Emperor to ride out to a border outpost just to meet an opponent princess.
His intense gaze never wavers from my face. "I came to pick you up, my Empress," he replies smoothly, his deep voice leaving no room for argument.
His words are simple, yet they carry a heavy, suffocating weight. I don't know what he is planning, I think, my mind racing as I analyze his every movement. I shouldn't let my guard down even for a single second. In the game of royal politics, an unexpected favor is often the most dangerous trap.
To my utter surprise, instead of mounting his to lead horse the procession, he boards the carriage with us.
The space inside the carriage instantly feels incredibly small. His broad shoulders and commanding presence seem to absorb all the air. Ava sits huddled in the corner, practically trembling from the sheer pressure emerge from him, while I remain perfectly upright, maintaining my composure.
After a while, the carriage slows to a halt, and we reach a massive, strange stone archway pulsing with an ethereal, glowing light.
"What is it?" I ask, unable to hide the curiosity in my voice as I look at the swirling vortex of energy within the arch.
"It is a teleportation gate," he answers softly.
I stare at it in awe. It is my very first time seeing it. In Arcadia, we have the magic stones, but we never developed the advanced artifact technology required to build something of this scale. As our carriage enters the glowing vortex, a strange, weightless sensation washes over me. In just a few seconds, the blinding light fades, and the grand, sprawling spires of the capital city appear before my eyes. We have traveled hundreds of miles in the blink of an eye.
He doesn't speak a single word after that. He simply sits across from me, his expression unreadable. I don't know what he is thinking.
Unable to help myself, I keep staring at him, studying the sharp line of his jaw and the quiet strength in his posture. Suddenly, as if sensing my gaze, he looks up. Our eyes meet in a sharp, electric moment. A dark, devastatingly handsome smile tugs at his lips.
Panicked at being caught, I quickly look away, my cheeks flaring with heat.
My heart is behaving entirely differently again, thumping wildly against my ribs. Is this because of the strange, heavy mana energy in the air? I try to reason with myself, blaming the environment. But deep down, I know the truth.
I just can't take my eyes off him. Maybe it is because he took my first hand-kiss... or maybe it is simply because he is remarkably handsome. Either way, this enemy emperor is turning out to be the most dangerous wildcard in my new life.
The exhaustion of the journey, combined with the heavy mana in the air, finally pulls me under. I don't know when I slept.
But sleep brings no peace. Ever since the day I woke up in the past, I have been trapped in a vicious cycle of nightmares. Every single night, I am forced to relive my execution day. I see the flashing, cold iron of the guillotine blade, and I hear the agonizing screams of my little brother dying right in front of me. In the dream, no matter how hard I thrash or scream, I am entirely paralyzed. I can't do anything to change it.
I always wake up crying, my soul suffocating under the weight of my past life's grief.
Suddenly, a strange sensation cuts through the dark fog of my nightmare. I feel a gentle, warm hand softly wiping the tears from my cheeks, and the presence of a strong, solid body resting beside me.
My warrior instincts flare, and I open my eyes immediately.
To my absolute horror, his face is inches away from mine. I am not lying against the carriage cushions I am lying directly on his lap. He is leaning over me, his thumb gently smoothing over my damp skin with a look of quiet, intense focus.
My heart leaps into my throat, and I jump up instantly, retreating to the furthest corner of the seat.
"Forgive me, Your Majesty!" I stammer, my composure completely shattering. "I am sorry for making you inconvenient... I did not mean to..."
It is so profoundly embarrassing. I can feel a burning, crimson blush rushing to my cheeks, turning them completely red. I am a seasoned commander, a woman who has led armies, yet I am trembling like a flustered child because I fell asleep on an enemy emperor.
Desperate to break the unsettling silence, I blurt out the first thing that comes to mind before he can even open his mouth.
"Thanks," I say quickly, bowing my head to hide my face.
"Umm," he replies softly, his deep voice carrying a trace of an unreadable emotion.
Without another word, he turns his gaze away and starts looking outside the window, granting me the privacy to compose myself.
I press my back against the carriage wall, trying to slow down my racing pulse. I don't know what this suffocating tension between us is. Ava is sitting right across from us in the carriage, but her presence has completely faded into the background. It feels as though the entire universe has shrunk down to this small, confined space, and I can feel absolutely nothing but his overwhelming presence.
After half a day passes, our carriage finally rolls through the colossal iron gates of the imperial palace.
The grandeur of the Dawn Empire unfolds before my eyes. After passing through a breathtakingly long, sprawling garden overflowing with vibrant flora, we reach the steps of the Emperor's personal palace.
The sight waiting for us is nothing short of magnificent. A long, impeccable line of attendants and royal butlers stands in perfect formation along the marble staircase. At the very front stands His Majesty's personal attendant his right-hand man radiating an air of absolute competence.
The carriage grinds to a halt. The Emperor steps out first, his towering figure instantly drawing the attention of everyone present. But instead of walking away, he stops.
He turns back toward the open carriage door and extends his hand toward me.
I stare at his broad, open palm, completely frozen for a fraction of a second. Everything is so terrifyingly new to me. In my entire past life, no one had ever treated me like a lady. I was a weapon, a shield, a general to be feared or used never a woman to be cherished or escorted with such delicate care. Yet, here he is, an enemy emperor, offering me the very reverence I was denied by my own homeland.
Swallowing the lump of emotion in my throat, I place my hand in his. I hold his calloused hand tightly and step down from the carriage.
The moment my feet touch the imperial ground, the entire line of attendants bows in a flawless, synchronized motion, their voices echoing across the courtyard.
"We welcome Your Imperial Majesty, and Her Imperial Highness, the Princess!"
Meanwhile, far away in the Arcadia Empire, deep within the shadows of the Empress's palace.
The heavy scent of expensive incense fills the dimly lit room. The Empress sits gracefully on her chaise, her eyes sharp and calculating, when the doors slide open quietly.
The Empress's personal maid, Merry, steps into the room and kneels smoothly, her head lowered. "Greetings, Your Imperial Highness. We have just received word from our border scouts... the Princess has successfully reached the Dawn Empire."
The Empress slowly sips her tea, a cold, venomous smile spreading across her painted lips.
"Implant our spies immediately," the Empress commands, her voice dropping to a sharp, icy whisper. "I want to confirm whether she is truly broken, or if she is still a threat to us. Watch her every move."
