CAMPAIGN 1.1

Jul 19, 2026

Adya's fingers tightened around Ayan's hand as they stepped further inside, her grip betraying her nervousness in this unfamiliar world of polished faces and smooth chatter. She leaned in closer, her voice barely above a whisper.

"Promise me you won't leave me alone here," she said, her wide eyes scanning the room.

Ayan gave her a reassuring squeeze, offering her a small smile.

"I promise."

She took a deep breath, exhaling slowly.

"I'm feeling nervous," she admitted, her voice tinged with anxiety.

"You can handle this," Ayan replied, his tone steady.

Adya glanced up at him, her lips curving into a hesitant smile.

"Say something motivating. I need it."

Ayan leaned closer, his voice low and teasing.

"Territory belongs to the dogs, not the lions."

Adya let out a soft laugh, shaking her head.

"Shut up," she muttered, though a hint of relief had crept into her tone.

Her gaze swept across the luxurious surroundings for a brief moment, the sheer extravagance overwhelming her. She paused, looking back at Ayan, her voice quiet and awed.

"How did we end up here?"

Ayan smirked, his eyes gleaming with a hint of mischief.

"Planned coincidence."

Faces flash by — A mix of strangers and familiar faces from previous encounters in the conference room, blending in the vibrant, upscale atmosphere. Ayan huddles with NARGIS, Haider's wife, while Adya stands beside him.

Haider approaches, carefully balancing drinks as he returns from the bar. Satpal's lawyer and two other attorneys linger near the terrace doors, their conversation muted, as they step into the smoking section, a haze of smoke curling lazily above them.

Vlada strides gracefully through the room, her eyes locking with Ayan's for a fleeting moment as she passes, her gaze lingering just long enough to leave an impression. Cricket and Shayla approach — their entrance smooth and confident, a magnetic pull that draws attention as they find Ayan and Adya amidst the crowd.

Shayla's playful tone cut through the buzz of the crowded room.

"You haven't seen the new palette in my bedroom, have you?"

Shayla's smile widened, her eyes gleaming with excitement.

Adya shifted, unsure how to respond.

"No... I haven't."

"Come with me!" Shayla declared, taking Adya's hand with a possessive grip. "I'm going to show you the best—" she paused to glance at Ayan, her smirk deepening. "I'm stealing her for a bit."

Cricket leaned in, chuckling as Shayla dragged Adya away.

"Be nice, baby. They're normal people."

Adya looked helplessly at Ayan as Shayla whisked her off deeper into the party. Her wide eyes silently pleaded for an escape, but Ayan could only offer a faint smile, his attention quickly redirected by Cricket's lingering presence.

"Wife?" Cricket asked.

"Girlfriend," Ayan corrected, his voice steady, but there was a slight hesitation as he glanced at Cricket.

Cricket leaned back, his glass of whiskey swirling gently in his hand. His smile was casual, but there was something sharp beneath it.

"Oh, that makes it even harder to turn her into a wife, doesn't it?"

Ayan frowned, unsure of where this conversation was heading.

"What do you mean?"

Cricket's grin widened, his eyes glinting with something that resembled both amusement and a quiet warning.

"First marriages don't last long in our line of work. Too many distractions. Too many... temptations."

The words hung in the air, as though they carried more weight than Ayan had expected. He felt a strange chill, an undercurrent of something darker running through the seemingly glamorous world he had just entered. His gut told him Cricket wasn't just making small talk. There was something more – something that lurked beneath the polished surface of this high society life.

Adya's eyes shifted across the room, her heart skipping a beat at the sight of the new arrival. The front door buzzed as Nitya entered with a calm but commanding presence, her dark eyes scanning the crowd with practiced precision. Across the room, Adya stood with Shayla and Nargis, an uneasy feeling bubbling in her chest.

"Who is that?" Adya asked, her voice a whisper but carrying the weight of her growing curiosity.

Nargis glanced over, raising an eyebrow, clearly amused.

"My God, girl…" she muttered under her breath.

Shayla smirked, the edges of her lips curling into a knowing grin.

"You haven't met her yet?"

Adya shook her head, still unsure.

"Who is she?"

Before either woman could answer, Nitya's gaze locked onto them from across the room, her eyes narrowing with a calculated smile. She was already making her way over, weaving through the crowd with an effortless grace, as if she owned every space she stepped into.

Shayla leaned in closer, her voice lowering conspiratorially.

"I bet she can hear us."

Nargis chuckled, though there was a hint of nervousness in her voice.

"Hell, she can probably smell us from here."

Before Adya could respond, Nitya had reached them, her presence engulfing the small circle. Her eyes lingered on Adya, sizing her up before her lips curved into a warm yet unsettling smile.

"Adya Sharma?" Nitya's voice was smooth, almost too smooth as if each word had been rehearsed. "Nitya Ghosh. I was hoping we'd meet tonight. And here you are, already mingling with the lions of the jungle."

Even as she spoke, Nitya leaned in, planting light kisses on Shayla and Nargis's cheeks, a gesture of familiarity that somehow felt like a claim of dominance. Adya felt a flicker of discomfort, unsure if she should return the gesture, unsure of her place here. She smiled weakly, trying to keep up with the flow, but the energy between them was off-kilter as if Nitya's presence demanded something unspoken.

Ayan, across the room, was deep in conversation with another lawyer, though he glanced over now and then, his eyes following as Vlada disappeared into the next room. But Adya was left alone with Nitya, and the air between them thickened as they settled into the nearby sofa, separated from the rest of the crowd.

Adya's eyes scanned the room, a mixture of opulence and ease surrounding her, but it only deepened the disquiet stirring within. She glanced at Nitya, whose calm demeanor stood in stark contrast to the simmering tension beneath the surface.

"People work hard," Adya began, her voice quiet yet heavy, as if she were sifting through her thoughts aloud. "They study, get small jobs, some work here, some work there. Everyone works hard, but they spend their whole lives just paying bills, trying to survive. Ordinary people."

Her eyes swept across the lavish decor, the expensive suits and elegant gowns. The laughter echoing through the villa seemed distant, a world apart.

"There's no one ordinary here."

Nitya's lips curled into a slight, knowing smile.

"But plenty are living in fear. You wouldn't believe it."

Adya turned to her, confusion flickering across her face.

"What do they fear?"

Nitya's gaze remained steady, her tone unsettlingly calm.

"Themselves. Each other."

Adya's breath hitched. Nitya's words were cutting, as if they carried a truth too painful to acknowledge. For a moment, the sounds of the party seemed to fade, leaving only the weight of the conversation hanging between them.

"And what do you fear?" Nitya asked, her eyes narrowing ever so slightly, probing deeper.

Adya hesitated, her voice almost a whisper.

"Loneliness. Complete and utter loneliness."

Nitya leaned back, a flicker of recognition crossing her face as if Adya's answer had struck a familiar chord. The faint clink of glasses and murmur of voices in the background seemed far away now. The room had shrunk around them, the rest of the world fading to shadows.

Nitya's eyes darkened, her voice dropping to a low, almost predatory murmur.

"Do you know what I fear?"

Adya swallowed hard, suddenly feeling as though the air around her had thickened.

"What?"

Nitya's smile faded, replaced by something colder, more dangerous.

"Responsibility."

Adya blinked, taken aback by the unexpected answer.

"Why?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Nitya didn't respond immediately. Instead, she gazed past Adya, her eyes distant, like someone staring into a void only they could see. A moment of silence stretched between them, filled with a tension that was almost suffocating.

And then, without another word, Nitya's gaze shifted back to Adya, the weight of something unspoken lingering in the air.

Adya's brow furrowed, her unease deepening. The party buzzed around them, but the weight of Nitya's words made everything feel distant, muted. It was as though they were in a bubble, isolated from the clinking glasses and murmurs of laughter.

"Why?" Adya asked, her voice barely audible, uncertain as if she wasn't sure she wanted to hear the answer.

Nitya's expression shifted to an odd mixture of amusement and something darker flickering behind her eyes.

"Why?" she repeated, almost mockingly, before leaning in slightly, her voice low, deliberate.

"Because of you. I've changed your entire life—forever."

Adya's heart skipped a beat, her pulse quickening as Nitya's words sank in.

"A new shift has come into your reality," Nitya continued, her tone disturbingly calm, though the intensity in her eyes was unmistakable.

"Because of me. I'm the reason. And the craziest part?" She paused, her lips curling into a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes.

"We've never met before this. This is the first time we're even talking. How insane is that?"
