Episode 8: The Price of the Key
The manual deadbolt click felt like a victory statement ringing through the dusty air. I stood back against the locked door, my heart hammering against my ribs, waiting for the panic to set in on his flawless face.
But Vance didn't panic.
He slowly let go of the heavy plastic bin, letting it drop to the floor with a dull thud. He didn't look at the door. He looked at me. His gray eyes, usually so warm and accommodating, narrowed into something sharp, dark, and predatory.
"You think you trapped me up here, Ren?" Vance asked, his voice dangerously low. He didn't sound angry. He sounded entirely amused, and that terrified me far more than any shout would have.
"I know I did," I replied, forcing my voice to stay steady as I crossed my arms, trying to project a confidence I was suddenly losing. "The key is hidden. You're not going anywhere until you face me."
Vance took a slow, deliberate step forward. He was tall, his broad shoulders blocking out the dim light from the single attic window, casting a massive shadow right over my body. "You really are a piece of work. You play the fragile, heartbroken victim in front of Roxy, you play the sweet little brother in front of Maya, and then you pull a stunt like this."
He took another step, closing the distance between us until I could feel the radiating heat of his body. My back hit the cold wood of the locked door. There was nowhere left for me to run.
"I told you the other day to stop playing games with me," Vance whispered, leaning down until his lips were just inches from my ear. His breath hitched against my skin, sending a violent shockwave of adrenaline straight down my spine. "But you just couldn't help yourself, could you? You wanted to see what happens when the green flag drops."
Before I could breathe, his large hand shot forward. He didn't reach for my face or my neck. His fingers slid directly down the open collar of my oversized shirt, his warm palm brushing firmly against the bare skin of my chest as he searched for the hidden key.
I gasped, my entire body going completely rigid against the door. My submissive instincts flared instantly, my knees turning to liquid under the heavy, unapologetic authority of his touch. I wanted him to take control, but the sheer speed and dominance of his shift threw me completely off balance.
"Vance..." I whimpered, my fingers weakly gripping his forearm to steady myself.
"Be quiet," he commanded softly, his gray eyes locking onto mine with absolute, unyielding intensity.
His fingers brushed against the metal chain around my neck. With one sharp, decisive pull, he snapped the thin cord, bringing the silver key up into the light between us. He held it up, a slow, dark smirk cutting across his handsome face.
"You wanted to trap me in the dark to force a sin out of me, Ren," Vance murmured, jingling the key right in front of my face before sliding it securely into his own pocket. "But now I have the key. Which means you aren't trapping me up here anymore."
He leaned in closer, his chest pressing flat against mine, pinning me completely against the solid wood of the door.
"Now," Vance whispered, his dark eyes consuming me entirely, "you're the one who's trapped up here with me."
