The warmth returned stronger the next day. It started as a low, persistent throb deep in her belly, like embers slowly being stoked back to life. Sylara tried to ignore it at first. She was pacing in her enclosure, drinking cold water until her stomach ached, pressing her overheated body against the cool glass. But the heat spread steadily, making her fur feel too thick, her skin too sensitive. Every brush of her tail against her thighs sent unwelcome sparks racing through her body. Realization dawned on Sylara. Her palms became moist as her chest tightened with dread.
No, no, no. It can’t be.
When the handlers came for her that afternoon, she already suspected where they were taking her. Sylara didn’t fight them. She walked with heavy steps, dread pooling in her chest. The breeding observation habitat felt smaller, the lighting warmer, the air thicker with tension. Kaelor was already inside, standing near the center of the space. His posture was rigid, shoulders tense, tail flicking with clear agitation. The moment she entered, his golden-amber eyes locked onto her, darkening with pained understanding.
He could smell it on her.
“Sylara…” he said carefully, voice low and strained. “You don’t have to—”
The speakers crackled before he could finish. “Compatibility session in progress. Physical interaction is strongly encouraged.”
Sylara’s breath hitched. She barely heard the speakers. The heat flared violently at the sound of his voice, at his scent filling the room. She backed away until her shoulders hit the wall, claws scraping against the surface. She needed to leave.
“I can’t,” she whispered, voice cracking. “Please… I don’t want to lose myself.”
But her body was already betraying her. A deep, aching pulse throbbed between her legs. Her skin flushed beneath her fur. The rational part of her mind was slowly being drowned out by pure instinct.
Kaelor took a slow step forward, and she growled. He stopped. His powerful frame was trembling with the effort of holding himself back. His claws were fully extended, digging into his own palms.
“I’m right here,” he said, voice rough but steady. “I won’t take anything you don’t give. Just breathe with me.”
“Go away! Leave me alone.”
For a long, agonizing moment they simply stood there, breathing hard, fighting the pull between them. But all her senses were honed solely on him. She slowly moved away from the entrance, hoping to create some distance between them. But they ended up circling each other warily. Sylara’s tail lashed wildly. The heat made every movement feel electric. She wanted to run. She wanted to fight. She wanted him.
“Sylara, you need to—”
“Stay away,” she choked out. “It is not my name!”
With a choked sob, she lunged at him out of desperation. Kaelor caught her, wrapping strong arms around her in a firm but careful hold as they sank to the padded floor. Their bodies pressed together. The contact sent a devastating wave of heat and need crashing through her. They grappled with a chaotic tangle of limbs, fur, and heavy breathing. Sylara’s instincts screamed at her to submit, to claim, and to mate. She clung to him tightly, claws digging into his back, trembling violently as tears slipped down her cheeks.
“I hate this,” she cried against his chest, voice muffled and broken. “I hate how much I want you right now. I hate that my body doesn’t feel like mine anymore.”
Kaelor held her close, one large hand gently stroking down her spine in slow, soothing strokes even as his own body shook with barely contained instinct. His breathing was ragged, but his voice remained calm and gentle.
“I know,” he whispered, pressing his forehead gently against the top of her head. “You’re terrified. So am I. But you’re not alone in this.” His voice cracked slightly. “Fight it with me. You’re strong. We can do this.”
She wanted to believe this. She wanted to have his strength, his confidence. Over time, the fight drained out of her. She stopped struggling and simply leaned against his chest, panting. His smell was intoxicating, making the heat in her belly burn with desperate, unwanted needs. She growled and clawed at his back. And yet, the male held her gently, one hand slowly stroking down her back in a soothing rhythm, even as his own body shook with barely contained need.
“You’ll always be you,” he murmured. “You’re strong.”
Sylara sobbed harder, burying her face deeper into his fur. For the first time since her transformation, she allowed herself to be held, truly held, by someone who understood exactly how much she was losing against the beast inside.
Kaelor felt the Sylara burry her face into his chest as she clung to him desperately. He groaned as he took deep breaths. He couldn’t betray the little hard-earned trust he just gained because his body was reacting to her scent. He thought of the bodies of lost hikers he found on the mountains, and at the humiliating and painful moments this facility inflicted on him. But no matter what he did, her need, her smell and little growls overwhelmed his senses, pulling and taunting at his instincts.
The researchers’ cold voices drifted down from above. “Hormonal spike detected. Strong compatibility response. Proceed to intercourse.”
“The idiots, they can’t read the room,” Kaelor grunted as he continued to stroke her back.
Sylara let out a broken laugh as she held him tighter, her body still shaking lightly.
“Maybe we should also send them a list of what we want when we’re at it. Do you have anything you want? A spa day, maybe?” he continued pensively. “Grooming is a pain.”
“You’re being silly,” she laughed more openly as the tension gradually left her body. “But it’d be nice.”
In that moment, all that mattered was the fragile, painful trust growing between them.
