Episode 10: The Perfect Caretaker
If the attic felt like a pressure cooker, dinner that night was a frozen wasteland.
Vance sat directly across from me, his posture stiff, his eyes glued firmly to his plate. He didn't look at me once. He passed the food, answered Maya’s questions, and smiled his perfect, fabricated green-flag smile whenever she leaned in to kiss his cheek. He was completely erasing what had happened. He was treating me like I was invisible.
The cold isolation in his dark gray eyes was driving me absolutely insane. A toxic, restless fire burned beneath my skin. If he thought ignoring me would make me go away, he was severely underestimating how unhinged I could be. I was already planning how to drag him out into the open, right in front of everyone.
But before I could stir the pot, Maya clinked her fork against her glass, beaming with excitement.
"Okay, boys, listen up because I have huge news," Maya announced, her sharp eyes sparkling. "My firm just confirmed it—I’m officially invited to the Stylist Awards next week. It's a mandatory five-day trip to Paris."
Vance finally looked up, his expression softening into genuine pride. "Wow, Maya. That’s incredible. You've worked so hard for this."
"I know, right?" Maya giggled, leaning over to squeeze his arm. "But here’s the dilemma. Mom and Dad are leaving for their cruise this weekend, too. Which leaves the house completely empty."
My ears perked up. The fork in my hand stilled.
Maya turned her gaze across the table, looking directly at her boyfriend. "Vance, babe... I know it's a lot to ask, but since your apartment lease is up next month anyway, could you stay here and watch Ren for the week? He's been so stressed with his classes, and I really don't want him staying in this big house all by himself."
Time literally stopped.
Vance froze. The color drained from his face so fast I thought he might actually faint. His dark gray eyes snapped across the table, locking onto mine for the first time since he had shoved me into the attic dust. He was completely trapped, his green-flag obligation to be the perfect, supportive partner colliding head-first with the terrifying reality of what I was.
"Maya... I don't know," Vance stammered, his voice tight, his knuckles turning white around his water glass. "Ren is nineteen. I'm sure he doesn't need a babysitter. Maybe I should just check in on him from my place—"
"Oh, don't be silly!" Maya interrupted, waving her hand dismissively. "You know how terrible he is at feeding himself when he’s stressed. Please, Vance? Just for five days? For me?"
She was practically begging her boyfriend to move into the dragon's den.
I leaned back in my chair, a slow, deeply toxic smirk curling the corners of my lips. I looked straight at Vance, watching the sheer panic dance behind his eyes as he realized he had no choice but to say yes.
"I don't mind, Sis," I whispered sweetly, my voice dripping with pure, wide-eyed innocence. I tilted my head, locking my gaze onto his trembling frame. "Vance is a great caretaker. I promise I'll be on my very best behavior while you're gone."
Vance swallowed hard, his throat bobbing as he looked at his future executioner.
Five days. No parents. No sister. Just the perfect green-flag man, trapped in a house with the monster he couldn't resist.
