Rabbit settled into a routine of helping Grace around at the inn and being tutored by her. She was trying to teach him the basics so he could function a bit better in society. Mainly reading, writing and basic arithmetic if he could get this down he would be able to start taking jobs. And within the month that Rabbit has been with Grace and her family his reading has greatly improved. He was even able to assist her with the inn’s guest book.
Now that Rabbit was semi confident in his ability to read he stood in front of the request board at the guild looking at the quests he was the right rank to take.
The guild had a letter Ranking system that determined what jobs members were allowed to take. Lower rank members got less dangerous quests that should be easier to complete. The ranks were A-F with A being the highest rank. And since Rabbit was both a new member and an F rank he had a limited amount he could take. The only one that caught his eye fully was one requesting help harvesting crops. It seemed like a simple job so Rabbit took it down from the board and brought it to Mari.
“This job, not many adventurers that aren’t farmers take this.” Mari had a small smile, as if it assumed her.
“Is that a bad job?”
“Not exactly bad but…you’ll see.” Mari approved the job and gave Rabbit directions.
The farm was located on the outskirts of town. When he got to the fence the farmer greeted him and told him what to do. It was the same as the job request, harvesting 100lbs of cabbage before sunset.
“Oh and take this just in case you see any snails, damn things been eatin’ my cabbage.” The farmer said handing over a jar of salt to Rabbit.
Rabbit nodded and was taken to the cabbage field.
“Just put them in that box, it’ll automatically close once you get to 100lbs, if you harvest any more put them in the basket next to the box. You’ll get paid extra for every 10lbs you harvest.”
“Alright.” Rabbit responded kneeling down by the nearest cabbage patch.
The Farmer left him to work as Rabbit started to cut the stem of the first ready cabbage. The work was tedious but Rabbit got into the grove of it fairly quick, easily getting halfway through the work. Kneeling down at the next cabbage patch his hand met with a snail.
“Hey, get away from my food!” A deep voice rang out from the tiny snail.
“You’re a snail?”
“Oh so you’re not blind, just dumb.”
“Snails can talk?”
“Damn you really are dumb, don’t they teach ya anything nowadays. Anyway, get away from my dinner.”
“I’m harvesting this, it’s not dinner for you.”
“Bullshit,” the snail scoffed. “It’s here so it’s my dinner, if humans wanted it they should have grown this inside.”
“That’s not how cabbages grow.” Rabbit muttered.
“You gonna do anything about it, you dumb kid.”
“I was given this by the farmer.” Rabbit pulled out the jar of salt.
“You don’t have the nerve, kid.” the snail mocked, “You don’t have what it takes to be a murderer.”
Rabbit didn’t respond, he simply opened the jar up and picked the snail up, dropping him into the jar. “I would have left you be, if you weren’t so rude.” he said softly before continuing on with his work.
He managed to finish the job with the 100lbs of cabbage as well as an extra 20lbs. After getting the payment for it, 300G in total, Rabbit started to walk back into town as the sun was setting behind him.
