A Summer to Remember

Aug 11, 2026

Jenny drove the Beetle with one hand, the other held her phone. The boy slept as usual in the passenger seat. "I know, right?.... All that damage...and people died...that woman who drowned in the underground parking, it's terrible...yeah..

The boy snorted and woke, exclaiming "I met a girl!"

"Gotta go, he's awake. Talk to you later" Jenny flipped the phone shut. "So? I have bunches of friends."

The boy stopped and laughed. "You know what I mean!"

"Sorry. Habit." She said, "You were right about the storm."

"Not even the biggest storm," he said. "Katrina is coming."

"I remember you mentioned Katrina before. What is it?" She asked.

"Massive hurricane in Oh Five." He explained. "Billions in damage, and people killed."

Wide eyed, Jenny exclaimed, "We have to warn people!"

"How, Jenny?"

"We tell them!"

The boy sighed. "And they just believe 2 kids out of nowhere?"

"We have to try!"

The boy looked at her sadly. "It's history. We can't change history."

Jenny countered, "It's not history yet! Not for me!"

"Jenny, people knew Katrina was coming. A lot evacuated, but some didn't."

"But-"

"But it won't change anything. The people who refused to leave will ALWAYS refuse to leave. Even if they DID believe us."

"Don't you even want to try?" she asked.

"Try to change history? Woof. Too much responsibility."

"What if you could save one person? Just one life?"

Something in his face shifted. "I've considered that more than you think."

"Consider it more."

He gave a small smile. "I will."

They drove in silence for a few minutes, then Jenny asked, "What about this time travel thing?"

"What about it?" He said with a small light hearted laugh.

"Where can you go? What can you do when you get there?"

"Well, I can only visit my own younger body. I can't really control it."

Jenny was genuinely curious. "So why here? Why now?"

The boy was taken aback, but answered. "Oh...well...this was a really good summer for me.." He suddenly changed the subject. "I'm glad your not freaking anymore."

Now it was Jenny's turn for a light laugh. I'm still kinda freaked, just had time to adjust. So you can't...like...visit Lincoln?"

"No. It would be cool to see a dinosaur though."

"Now you sound like Booger Machine," she said.

He laughed. "I told you. It's still me."

Jenny smiled back at him. "Good."

The boy let out a huge yawn. "I may be waking up."

"Try to think about how it works, you may find a way to control it. Maybe meditating."

The boy nodded and yawned again. He laid his head back and yawned one last time then dozed off.

Jenny reached over and stroked his hair. "Till next time."
