A Summer to Remember

May 11th - Dr. Doolittle and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider

May 11th - Dr. Doolittle and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider

Aug 12, 2026

The following week the boy woke with real excitement. "I did it!"

Jenny started pulling the Beetle over to a public park. "Did what?"

"What you said! I controlled it!"

Jenny found a space and parked the car leaving the windows down. "The meditation worked?"

The boy answered, "Yeah, I meditated before I went to bed and now I'm here!"

Jenny opened her door to climb out of the Beetle and said excitedly "How long did it take?"

The boy also climbed out, "About and hour of meditation, but about 3 months of practice."

They walked together over to a park bench. "Maybe you won't have to fall asleep if you get good enough." She sat on the bench.

The boy sat next to her. "That would be awesome!"

"You mentioned a girl last time. You sounded really excited about her."

"Yeah," He said, "wanted to ask advice, but we didn't get a chance to talk about her."

She smiled, "Still need advice?"

He shook his head, "No, been dating for two months now."

She playfully punched at his shoulder. "Look at you! Dating girls!"

He laughed. "She's not the first I met, or dated."

"You didn't want to talk about them?"

"No, they were nice girls, but it's just that Eileen-"

"She has a name!" Jenny exclaimed.

Laughing, he said, "Yes! Eileen! Eileen! I could say it all day long!"

"You really like her?"

"I feel like she's 'The One', ya know."

Jenny reached over and hugged him. "I'm so happy for you!"

"Thanks, Jenny."

Jenny released the hug and said, "Have you thought about telling our parent about the time travel thing?"

"They would freak beyond all freaking."

"Maybe, if they even believed it." Jenny giggled, 'Might be easier than telling them what movies we're really watching."

The boy laughed back. "We didn't have to lie every time, but yeah."

He yawned deeply.

"Already?" Jenny asked.

The boy nodded and they got up to walk back to the car.

Jenny said, "Did you consider what I said last time about Katrina?"

"Yeah, need better control if I'm to try that."

Jenny pat his shoulder, "Just keep practicing."

He sat on the passenger side, Jenny closed the door for him and he said, "I'll try to be back if I can."

He lay back and dozed. Jenny smiled and started to walk around but he popped up again, "I wanna propose to Eileen!"

Jenny came back to the open window. "You barely just met her!"

He looked up at her. "It's been six months for me."

"You just dozed and popped right back up!"

The boy chuckled, "You should watch more Sci Fi channel, you'd understand time travel better."

Jenny laughed, "That'll be the day. I understand well enough." She checked her watch, and then walked around to the driver side and got in . "What movies do you think we watched tonight?"

"Jurassic Park Three and Legally Blonde!"

"No, Dr. Doolittle and Lara Croft."

He said, "'Jurassic Park' and 'Legally Blonde' must be next time then.

"This is the fifth night. No more free ones from the contest."

He smiled, "We came more times on our own dime."

"So why here? Why now?"

"This was the summer you started being nice to me."

"Hey!" She protested, "I was always nice to you!"

"You know what I mean. We started getting genuinely close." He reflected a moment, "It was OUR summer."

"But-"

"I don't know how long I have." He interrupted. "I want to ask Eileen to marry me, but what if she says no? I'm terrified!"

"Advice time?" She asked. He nodded enthusiastically, and she continued. "You barely had a chance to tell me about her."

"She's nice".

Jenny laughed. "I need more than that. Tell my why you think she's 'The One'."

"She didn't run away screaming?" Jenny asked, smiling now.

The boy stopped and thought for moment. "Ok, just the other day I still hadn't been able to travel back here, and I was depressed."

"Ok, keep going."

"I hadn't told anyone else here about the time travel .... So I was trying to hide the depression."

"And?"

"Eileen wasn't fooled. She saw right through me. She knew right off."

Jenny's eyes widened, "What did you tell her?"

"The truth." He answered. "I swore her to secrecy and told her about our meetings."

"She didn't run away screaming?"

"No," he said. "And the real thing is, I didn't once consider lying to her. Making up a story to cover it."

"You were honest with Eileen."

"Yes. It felt right to just tell the truth. I even stopped feeling depressed."

"I assume she believed you."

He smiled. "No one in white coats have shown up."

"Marry her," Jenny said simply.

"Yeah, but how? What do I even say?"

"Do you love her? Need her?"

He looked into his sister's eyes. "Yes. So very, very much."

Jenny's eyes filled. "Tell her that. Just that. Trust me, let yourself feel it when you say it, and she'll know."

He smiled at her. "What would I ever do without you?"

Jenny could see their house not far in the distance. "We're almost home. Should you go?"

"Yeah. I think I can do that." He rested his head back against the headrest and closed his eyes.

He dozed off just as Jenny was pulling into the driveway. She parked the Beetle and reached over to stroke the boy's head. "You are growing up right before my eyes."
