A Summer to Remember

"Hey, Sis."

"I was wondering if you were going to make it tonight," Jenny said, while pulling the car over.

"I still don't have full control. Sometimes it seems easier than others."

Jenny finished parking and she climbed out. "Just keep working on it. How is Eileen?"

The boy climbed out and stood next to her. "She's been Missus Booger Machine for a few years now," he said.

Jenny threw her arms around him in delight. "I am so glad for you!"

He hugged back. "I got a new job, but it meant moving to a new city."

"What do you do?" She took his hand and led him to the front of the Beetle so they could sit against it.

"Government job. I fill out forms all day long."

"Sounds mind numbing."

"Pays good, though. Tonight is the first night in our new house." He paused a moment.

"Ok, what? Somethings on your mind."

"We talked about having a baby. Eileen thinks we are ready."

Jenny asked, "Don't you?"

"I don't know. I'm kinda scared I'll screw the poor kid up."

Jenny laughed. "I suspect all parents worry about that."

"You think?"

"I overheard Mom and Dad one night just after you were born. Dad said pretty much what you just said."

He smiled at that. "Was Dad right? Am I messed up?"

"Totally," she said. "A complete mess."

He laughed with her, "You always know what to say."

"Just lucky."

The boy went bleary eyed and shook back and forth.

Jenny asked with concern, "Are you ok?

"I think Eileen wants to get started on that baby!"

Jenny squealed with laughter as the boy passed out.

She moved to keep him from falling, but he was back again almost instantly. "Back so soon? I hope she isn't disappointed!"

"Huh?" He looked at her confused for a split second, "Oh yeah. That was over a year ago for me."

Jenny stopped laughing. "Did you have a baby?"

"No. We kept trying but it's not happening."

"I'm sorry."

He started patting at his pockets, "No cigarettes." He took a deep breath. "It's killing her. She really wants a baby." His eyes became ashen. "She looks so sad and vacant sometimes."

"Have you seen a Doctor?" She said with concern.

"Yeah. We're waiting for results."

"In the morning?"

"In a few minutes. We're sitting-"

"Hey!" Jenny interrupted. "You're awake this time!"

His eyes lit up. "Hey! You're right!"

"What's different? Why-"

"Hang on, the Doctor's coming."

He dozed, then came right back, wide eyed and sad. "Cancer."

"You have cancer?"

"Not me. Eileen. She has a tumor."

"What about the baby?"

"The tumor is why she can't have one." He looked at Jenny. "She's dying. She only has a few months."

Jenny pulled him into her arms, and then, fierce with sudden purpose: "It's time! For what we talked about! Saving just one person!"

"I don't know if I can, my control isn't that good."

"Try! You’re getting better, just keep practicing!"

He leaned over and kissed her on the cheek. "I'll let you know." He got back into the passenger seat and rested his head. In seconds he is asleep.

Jenny gets into the driver seat and waits a moment, watching.

The boy wakes and looks around. "Are we home yet?"

"Not yet. It won't be long." Jenny started the car and they start moving again.
