Kingdom Run by Blood - Vampires Rewritten

Chapter 2.5: Adrian

Chapter 2.5: Adrian

Aug 08, 2026

Eight years ago

Me and Lucía sat huddled up against a wall one morning. The streets were narrow, yet crowded, stone pathways littered with grime and trash. Her tiny, frail body was leaned against mine, her head on my shoulder as we watched the people walk by. She perked up when she saw a bug fly by and land on the wall beside her.

   A dragonfly.

She gasped, beaming up at the small, metallic green creature before it flew away, disappearing into the grey sky. I breathed a small laugh, then doubled over, coughing.

I caught a familiar gaze nearby- a boy named Odilon. He wandered around with his siblings- an older sister, a younger sister, and his eldest brother- probably going off for scavenging. He gave a small smile and a brief wave, and I beamed and waved back.

I drummed my hands against my knees to a rhythm I didn't know after he disappeared, lost in the repetitive motion. My hands dropped to my sides when I caught our mother in the corner of my eye, and my body felt heavy with dread.

Freckles dotted her tanned skin, her hair worn in one long braid and tied with some old string. Her gaze was tired, burning into me, but the message was relayed in an instant.

"Come on, Luci," I muttered, standing up and pulling her to her feet. "Mum's here." She hummed.

From there, we left our little sanctuary, hand in hand.

As the youngest of only two remaining Vampires, Alaric is forced to carry on the tradition of creating a new heir to continue the holy bloodline and keep the Kingdom at peace. But with no desire to marry a woman and the weight of isolation, he finds it increasingly difficult to see why he would want to live through such a future.
For the time being, however, one person keeps him up and out of bed each day: Adrian. As a scarred boy from the Slums working as a valet under a contract, he can only serve in the palace until Alaric's eventual wedding and coronation. But as Alaric's wedding approaches, they are left alone together to face the bleak realities of life in the Kingdom and their society.
Soon, inevitable arrangements will fall into place, and they will eventually have to part. Alaric would lose his reason to keep going, and Adrian would be left to cope with yet another loss.

But something the Kingdom had never seen before changes this. The wedding is cancelled.

Two sudden deaths within the palace haunt the entire Kingdom, and only the two boys have leads on figuring out who caused them and why. So now, this is Alaric's chance- he is finally given a purpose: To find out who the killer is and avenge those who have fallen. To flip the societal pitfalls inside-out, and expose the monarchy's flaws buried under tradition in the process. To make things right before it's too late.

Balancing relationships with duty.
Navigating grief.
Picking the right path.

The longer Alaric wades through the mystery, the more entangled he gets with something that was thought to have been destroyed years ago.

Maybe all paths would just lead to loss.
But what if there was a way to win it all?
Given the risks at hand and his own internal setbacks, Alaric is only left with one question:
How?
