The next morning came around, just like it always did.
The sun shining in the clear blue sky as we stood on the doorstep of the first address noted down on the paper.
I raised my hand and knocked on the door before we waited for the door to swing open and as it did.“Hello…?” They answered, confused. “And you are…?”
“Alexander Hoe'r.” I answered nervously, “Uhm…” I handed them the letter.
“I was sent this letter, I was wondering if you knew anything about it…?” I tried explaining.
“Katerina gave us your address.” Casper added.
They looked at us before looking down at the letter, skimming it over for a moment before abruptly handing it back to us.
“No, sorry.” They said “No clue.”
I nodded, “Alright, thanks-” I said, only to be cut off.
“Alright, great. Great.” They said, before hastily shutting the door.
Me and Casper turned to face each other.
That had been entirely useless, but that's not entirely unexpected.
Though all we could do was head to the next address and so we found ourselves at the next door, knocking again and impatiently waiting for an answer again.
They opened the door, their confused eyes landing on two complete strangers.
“Oh, hello.” Casper greeted, straightening up. “Pardon the odd question but…”
He paused for a bit as he pulled out the letter. “We’ve been receiving odd letters in the mail, and you were one of the names listed.” He said, handing the letter to the homeowner who started reading through.
“You know anything about it?” He asked.
They paused to think for a moment only to shake their head.
“Sorry, no.” They said, “I don’t know what this is.”
After a slight pause they opened their mouth, “What’re your names?” They asked.
I fidgetted with my hands. “Uhm. Alexander.” I said.
“Casper.” He said. “And you?”
“Marshall.” They said, “Sorry bout this whole thing, that’s super weird.”
“Good luck.” They said, smiling.
We waved, smiling before they shut the door.
Now onto the next…
Which didn't tell us anything new either. Neither did the next, or the one after that.
They were all the same, no one knew what to make of it and neither of us knew where to begin when it came to asking.
Me and Casper headed back home, giving up for the day and I slumped into the couch beside Casper. “Guess that's it.” I said.
Casper stayed silent for a moment. “I don't know…” He said. “Don't know what to do…” He continued, mumbling.
“Christ, well I can't think of anything.” I said.
“Well why don't we sleep on it?” He said, letting out a chuckle. “We'll think of something, I’m sure of it.”
“Guess that's about the only thing we can do.” I said.
Casper nervously chuckled again.
“Shame this had to happen at all.” He said.
I nodded as we both stared off into the distance in silence.
