Back at the stationhouse, Rayne booted up his desk computer to research more about the Sovereign Pack. With them being an official political party, they had their own government-approved website with photographs of the members and their names. None of them were familiar to Rayne, but he knew any one of them could possibly be his killer.
Honestly, what they stood for was beyond disgusting and belittling to omegas everywhere. They claimed omegas shouldn’t work because their sole purpose in life was to stay at home with their babies and care for their mate. They shouldn’t be able to open their own bank account or even purchase a house unless they had an alpha to co-sign for them.
It was absolutely sickening.
How such vile beliefs were allowed on a government official site was beyond Rayne, and it made him realize that despite all the efforts his omega ancestors had made to pave a better, more equal life for them, some things would never change.
“You look like you’re ready to break that computer monitor.” One of his omega colleagues remarked as he moseyed up to his desk with a blue frosted donut in his hand. “What the hell are you looking into?”
“Alpha politics.” Rayne raked a hand through his hair with a frustrated groan. “It could be connected to my murder case. Reading this crap is just so demeaning and honestly heartbreaking. Like, I know the guys here can be assholes sometimes, but none of them have ever made me feel so belittled like this website does. Like, look at this shit, Gray”
Detective Grayson Lancaster peered over his shoulder, catching crumbs in his napkin as he took a bite of his donut. “Omega suppressants and birth control should be considered illegal substances by law. Sterilization shouldn’t be considered until the omega has produced at least four children. Good heavens.”
“Right? Who came up with this nonsense?” Rayne shook his head.
“Two was plenty for me.” Grayson stuck the rest of his donut in his mouth, taking a moment to chew and swallow before saying, “You couldn’t pay me to go through all that again. I’m so glad the rugrats are in school now. I love them to death, but they’re a handful.”
“Makes me wonder if my victim encountered one of these alphas and told them to shove their beliefs where the sun doesn’t shine.” Rayne sighed, then spared a glance at the digital clock on his screen. “I’m about to head down to the forensics department to see if they’ve gotten an ID on the poor omega yet. Since I’m lead detective on this, I’ll have to inform any next of kin or mate he might’ve had.”
“Any mate would be going absolutely feral right now. You know how intense those shared bonds are. There’s no way in hell he has one.”
“Unless his mate’s the one that killed him,” Rayne said.
Grayson visibly shivered. “That’s true. Even then, such an alpha must not have any heart or empathy in their soul to do such a thing.”
“Read more about what the Sovereign Pack believes in.” Rayne pushed himself up from his desk, powering off his computer because he didn’t want to read anymore of it. “You’ll see there’s a lot of soulless alphas out there who hate us and see us as nothing more than breedable livestock.”
For some reason, he couldn’t help but think back to Kellan’s warning. It made him wonder what that alpha believed in and if he was just as rotten as the rest of them.
When omega detective Rayne Calloway takes on his first homicide investigation, he expects a straightforward case. Instead, he uncovers a deadly conspiracy among alphas and a ruthless killer preying on innocent omegas. But as danger escalates, the last thing on Rayne's mind is finding love. Especially not with an alpha gangster. While Rayne's determined to follow the evidence to get justice and solve his first case, his heart might have other plans for him.
