The next day Satoru woke up to the smell of something burning. He quickly rose to his feet and bee-lined it for the kitchen.
There he saw Kanato seemingly trying to cook something. Satoru had no clue what was in the pan, it was burned too badly for him to tell.
Kanato turned around to look at Satoru, a sad expression on his face, “...ah, morning.”
“Looks like someone was trying to burn the place down while I slept,” Satoru laughed.
“No! I was trying to cook you some breakfast. But it didn’t quite turn out…”
Satoru smiled and pat Kanato on the back, “hey I appreciate the gesture. I can help you whip up something new.”
Kanato nodded and Satoru began looking around his kitchen for something else to eat.
“How about some simple eggs and toast? That’s pretty hard to screw up,” Satoru suggested.
“That’s fine with me,” Kanato smiled, placing the burned pan into the sink.
Satoru worked on getting all the cookware and ingredients out while Kanato did the dishes, cleaning up his mess.
“Do you want to work on cooking the eggs while I make the toast?” Satoru asked.
“Are you sure you trust me? You saw how badly I failed just now…” he said hesitantly, feeling a little embarrassed.
“Of course I do, they’re not that hard to make,” Satoru said, sounding a little sarcastic.
“Alright. Alright,” Kanato surrendered.
Cooking went along smoothly and in the end they had a tasty plate of eggs and toast in front of them.
“Thank you for the food,” they both said in unison.
The morning passed by slowly but they weren’t complaining by any means. It felt nice to just slow down and enjoy the time they were able to spend with one another. Especially for Kanato. It felt like a weight was lifted off his shoulders, not having to worry about what his mom wanted him to be doing. However it was a bit difficult to allow himself to do nothing without feeling like he should be doing something better with his time.
Satoru and Kanato were watching a music channel after they ate when they saw an advertisement from their favorite band saying that they would be having a live show next month.
“Hey, we should go to that. It’ll be perfect since exams will be over. The three of us can go see it and take time to destress,” Satoru suggested.
“That sounds amazing. It’s been too long since I’ve been to a concert.”
“How about we head to your CD shop later today and pick up the tickets.”
“Works for me! I’ll have something to look forward to after all the constant studying.”
“Exactly, it’ll be nice to spend some quality time with you guys, not having to worry about tests and other things.”
Kanato nodded, “I agree.”
“Do you think your boss will give us a discount for the tickets?” Satoru asked as they made their way down the street to the music store.
“I sure hope so but we’ll have to find out,” Kanato laughed.
Kanato opened the door to the CD shop and was greeted by his boss.
His boss was a man in his forties with medium-length brown hair. He had a pretty scruffy look to him and looked unkept.
“Hey there, are you here to work a shift?” his boss joked.
“Unfortunately not,” Kanato smiled, “do you happen to have any tickets for the upcoming Sanctum Inspector concert?”
“Ah, I should’ve known that’s what you were after,” his boss sighed. “Indeed we do, will it be two tickets? One for you and your buddy?” he asked.
Kanato nodded, “though could I get one more? My other friend needs one too.”
The man nodded, “sure. I’ll get those for you guys.”
“Would we maybe be able to get an employee discount..?” Kanato sheepishly asked, batting his eyelashes.
His boss sighed, “I suppose I don’t see why not,” he said, ringing up the tickets for half of what they should’ve been.
Kanato had a big smile on his face as he handed his boss the money, “thank you boss. I’ll be sure to work hard,” he said, bowing.
“You better! Now you boys have fun. Don’t waste too much time worrying about school,” he smiled.
“We won’t,” Kanato smiled, putting the tickets into his wallet before waving to his boss and walking out with Satoru.
“Thanks for getting those,” Satoru said.
“Of course. Thanks for helping me get out of my rough situation and giving me something to work towards and look forward to.”
Satoru smiled, patting Kanato’s back, “of course. I would do it a thousand times over.”
Kanato smiled back at him before looking at his phone, he’d been doing his best to ignore it but he wanted to see the time but ended up getting bombarded by countless voicemails and missed calls from his mother. He bit his lip anxiously before looking at Satoru, “I should get going. I don’t want my mom to be more upset with me than she already is…”
Satoru nodded, understanding, “that’s fine. I hope she’s not too mad at you and you get home alright.”
Kanato smiled, “thanks, I’ll see you at school tomorrow,” he waved.
Satoru waved back as he watched Kanato slowly disappear from sight.
