Do we remember love?

pt2: Frozen yogurt

pt2: Frozen yogurt

Aug 12, 2026

"Sorry that I'm late, I had to take care of some stuff. Did you just get here too?"

She wore a red summer dress with roses around it. Her beige colored heels contemplated her dress and herself. Her hair was neatly ironed, covering everything from her upper shoulder other than her face. She didn't have any fake eyelashes or did her nails. Her makeup was fairly unnoticeable, almost not being able to tell she had it on in the first place. Yet, her face was beautiful. Almost as if it was my first time ever seeing someone so captivating. For the first time ever, the idea of asking a girl out despite what my heart would feel entered my thoughts. And lingered.

"Miles?" She said once more.

"Ah. Sorry I was spacing out." I told her while having trouble looking at her eyes. "I just got here."

"Oh great! I was worried that I may have taken too long."

I looked at her confusingly, while saying, "Why? You made it just on time."

She walked closer to me, taking what seems to be her purple backpack out from her back.

"I don't know. I just had a hunch you were the type of guy to arrive 30 minutes early." she said, placing her backpack on a chair.

Wait, you did?

I was startled. I would've never guessed that she would think of me that way, since her personality made it seem like she didn't think about me at all.

"Why do you say that?" I asked her while flexing my legs, preventing them from shaking.

Slowly, she started walking towards the self-serve frozen yogurt cups. Still keeping her eyes on me.

"Your face. You look attentive and kind. Like you'll always be the first one, even if no one brings it upon you."

As she walks past, she turns around to keep facing me.

"Come on! I want to see what you get!" she says, gesturing her hands to follow her.

I don't know what her deal was. Whether it was to bring me here to entertain her or drag me into an alley way and sell my organs for profits. Whatever it was, she was definitely doing her job well. Because my body found strength by just being around her, and I used that strength to follow her.

When we made it to the frozen yogurt cups, I started fighting with my hunger and reasoning. I missed breakfast this morning and my stomach was already asking for lunch, but my money knew I shouldn't let my body talk. If I did, I wouldn't have enough money for the fare back.

I'll just get the normal size.

Being 3 inches away from my right shoulder, I peek at her watching the cups. She grabbed one cup and looked all around it before grabbing another cup and putting it on top. After realizing it was the same size she grabbed a larger cup and stacked it with the other two to measure it.

I should probably start grabbing my yogurt, I said in an unsure tone.

Turning to the frozen yogurt self-serve machines, which was about a foot away, I felt my hamstring weirdly moving by itself.

"Augh" I let out in pain.

She turned her eyes towards me, while holding 6 different frozen yogurt cups placed on top of each other.

"Uh uhm, you know the size of the cup doesn't matter right?" I say, to change the focus off me.

She looks at the cups in her hands, then looks back at me while giggling.

"I know. I just wanted to do it for fun, you know?"

I didn't know. But thinking about it does bring up a question.

"How is it fun?" I asked her.

She starts placing all the cups back while keeping the regular size cup to herself.

"I wanted to see how many cups I could stack before you say something. And congratulations! You beat the other boy from the last time I came here. His record was 10." She told me with a cheerful smile.

But her cheerful smile didn't cheer me up. Hearing the words 'other boy' had struck a chord on me. And I know I shouldn't be thinking that way. We're not even friends or anything like that, yet I still feel those words aching my heart. It's not even for the reason she had been here with another guy before, but it's the reason that she had to say it to me. To let me know I wasn't the first.

"Ohhhh, that's…great!" I said in a fake cheerful tone.

I didn't want to make things awkward just because my heart was having problems with wanting something special. I knew it was a reach for me to think she would only be given this attention to me. Still, my heart kept believing.

Once my hamstring stopped moving, I finally scooted my way to the self-serve yogurt machines.

“Hmm, should I get cookies and cream or strawberry?” I asked myself quietly.

There were about 18 options to choose from. Ranging from cake batter to mango to even purple tart. I thought to go with the safest option, cookies and cream with strawberry.

Looking to see what she would get, my eyes widened when I saw her filling the cup with every flavor.

“Hey Miles. What do you think tart tastes like?” She asks, while already serving herself the purple tart.

“Hey! You know that could taste bad all together right?” I alerted her.

She let go of the lever of the purple tart machine as she looked at her cup. Filled to the brim, it contained many colors and flavors that were already melting together. For some reason, it kinda matched her.

“Well it could possibly taste bad. But I’ll never know until I try.”

I gave her a look which every disappointed parent does when their kids do something so obviously dense.

I sighed with an empty yogurt cup, still wondering what I should get.

“Hey what flavor do you like from here?” I asked her, while still looking at her mystery flavored yogurt.

She turned around and gave me a pleased smile, almost hoping that I would ask her that question.

“Ohhhh, doesn’t someone like to know?”

I looked at her with a serious look. I didn’t want to tell her that I was planning to make her a yogurt cup that she likes, in the obvious case she wasn’t going to like her’s. But saying that idea out loud felt like ruining the whole moment of doing it in the first place.

“I’m just curious. I mean, I don’t really know why I’m here. But since I'm here, I should at least try to learn more about you.” I said very anxiously.

I know you might be wondering why I’m nervous, if before I was talking to her with no problem… I don’t know. Seeing her in such a different way, I feel like I might mess up at any moment. And that’s something that makes me nervous. If I do mess up, I won’t be able to even look at her in the face anymore. Which makes me anxious.

“Mmmmm is that so? Does someone have a crush on me?” She says, with her pointer finger at the bottom of her lip.

“No” I said, knowing it was a tease.

She started to come closer, with her abomination still in her hand.

Oh no, what's she planning now?

Not being able to move, I made it seem like I was going to serve myself some strawberry chocolate yogurt.

“About my favorite flavor, I think the one I’d get out of all of them is…”

Creeping so close to me, I wouldn’t be surprised if a small buckle from my legs would cause our bodies to touch.

“is?” I said, speeding up the answer to hopefully make her walk back.

“Is mint chocolate chip” she said, with a glittering expression.

“What? There’s not even mint chocolate chip flavored yogurt in here!” I told her.

“I know, but it’s my favorite.” She said, walking towards the toppings bar.

I looked at her with disbelief. It was mostly for the fact she didn’t try something on me, while also not telling me a flavor she liked from the options. Mostly the first reason.

I looked at the options and wondered if I should just get something that fits my palate or risk getting her a cup that she won’t even touch.

Eh what the heck, I’ll eat both yogurt cups if I have to.

Before choosing, I looked at her one last time.

Let’s see, what flavor does she remind me of?

Looking at her carefully adding m&m's into her already filled yogurt cup, the perfect flavor came to mind.

I hope she likes this, I thought, doubting myself.

After filling my yogurt cup with a reasonable amount, I dragged my feet to the toppings bar where she waited for me.

“Hey! Look at my cup!” She said, stretching it out proudly.

I know before I called her cup an abomination, I want to take it back. With the added powdered mini cookie dough, crumbles of oreo, mini bits of marshmallows, and a hint of white passion fruit juice poppers, the final product made the first appearance look appetizing.

I really hope she likes that, I thought with a nervous look.

“What toppings are you going to add to your… mango yogurt?”

She looked shocked, which shocked me.

“Why are you surprised? I think I should be the one gasping.”

“Ahh sorry. I just didn’t think you would remember.”

“What?”

For the first time since we met, she looked startled. Of course, I wanted to say that I was happy to get her off guard. But I couldn’t be happy when I didn’t even know why she was so taken back.

“Oh it’s nothing, let me see what you get!” She said, back to her cheerful voice.

Is she hiding something?

I looked around at the toppings the bar had, there were options like fruits, chocolate, nuts, gummies, and even Reese's cups.

Ooooo. I really want Reese’s cups right about now.

But I knew this wasn’t for me. So after looking carefully at the toppings she had in her cup, I made sure to add every single one to “mines”.

As I was adding the last topping, she looked at me with an odd look. She scanned her cup while scanning my cup, looking for a similarity.

Oh shit! I can’t let her find out.

Quickly, I grabbed a scoop of Reese's cups to cover the other toppings.

“I’m all done. Are you ready?” I asked her.

She tilted her head just slightly while giving me a baby frowning face.

“Yeah, I’m ready.” She said normally.

I hope I didn’t make her mood swing.

As we made our way to the cashier, there was a scale designated to weigh the frozen yogurt and calculate the total. I put mine first. The machine summed my total to be $9.50 on the dot.

“Yes” I quietly said to myself.

“Wow, you stayed under 10 dollars. In that case, I think mine will stay under 20.” She said, with a confident look.

“Let’s hope.” I said under my breath.

As soon as she placed it, the total skyrocketed. Patiently waiting for the scale to stay on a number, she came closer to me to see it as well.

“Your total is thirty-eight dollars. Will you guys be paying in cash or card?”

The moment I heard thirty, my mouth dropped open. I turned towards her, hoping to see an overwhelming reaction as well. But she didn’t have one.

With a sad face she said, “Aw man, I was only off by 8 dollars.”

“Wait, hold on. That’s what you're concerned about?”

She looks at me, still with a sad face.

“Yeah, if I was right I was going to ask you to do sweet things to me.”

Knowing what she meant, I looked at the guy taking our order while saying, “ignore her, she just got her wisdom tooth taken out.”

He gave me a smile, but I had a feeling he wasn't smiling from what I said.

“There’s a couples discount going on right now for frozen yogurt. It’s 40 percent off.”

“Oh. Thanks bu-“

Covering my mouth completely, she wrapped her left arm around my left shoulder and came centimeters away from my face with hers.

“What are the requirements?” She said in a slowed, interested voice.

“There is some proof required. But you two don’t need to show me proof. I already assumed that you two were going out from the start ” he said, giving me a wink.

Motherfuc–

"He's just joking. I'll pay for the full price, so don't worry about it." I told her.

I knew all of this was just a scheme for her to find some entertainment out of me. From the start, she acted weirdly friendly towards me and I never once thought it was because she wanted to use me. Well, my mind did, multiple times. But my body doesn't listen, and it's like that for everyone. No matter what we tell our brains, our bodies have their own way of wanting and expressing things that the mind can't stop. And so, when I saw her bright pink face looking at me, with her sparkly brown eyes finding it hard to meet with my black dimmed ones, my body expressed a feeling that my mind couldn't suppress. The feeling of love.
