Kingdom Run by Blood - Vampires Rewritten

Chapter 3.5: Alaric

Chapter 3.5: Alaric

Aug 15, 2026

Six years ago

   "One... Two... Three..."

I frantically ran around the library for a place to hide while Adrian's voice echoed around the walls.

   "Eleven... Twelve... Thirteen..."

The library was impossibly huge, decorated like a ballroom. Winding shelves and walls twisted the place into some sort of labyrinth, lined with books and folders.

   "Eighteen... Nineteen... Twenty..."

Adrian's voice had begun to fade away as I entered the history hall.

   "Twenty-seven... Twenty-eight... Twenty-nine..."

I found a big statue of a pureblood Vampire near a corner and crouched down behind it, mostly obscured by its wings spread wide.

   "Thirty!"

I waited there for a few minutes, hearing his footsteps fade in and out. I realized he was trying to be quiet, but I can hear better than he can.

I peek through the small openings of the statues and see him several yards away. My heart thuds against my ribs, and I smile at the delicious adrenaline that trickled through me.

   Something grazes my leg.

I look down and see a roach the size of my thumb, crawling along the wall with curious antennae. I yelp and back away, out in the open.

He sees me and jogs over, yanking me to my feet. I lose my balance and fall over him, sending him into a fit of laughter as we tumble to the ground. I scramble to my feet beside me as he sat up, eyes locked on the bug.

"What're you looking at?" he asks. He follows my gaze and yelps as well, and he's up on his feet in an instant. "Oh." I chuckle.

"You really have no survival instincts, do you?"

"What? Of course I do." I roll my eyes.

"Right. Let's get away." I pause, brushing stray strands of hair behind ny ear. "We're too old for this, anyway."

They both know that the age of 12 is a bit old for hide and seek.
But neither of them got much of a childhood, anyway, so why not try to live it now?
If only the Queen didn't disapprove of it.

Okay, so this chapter may seem like a bit of a let down, but just wait and see later down the road ;)

As the youngest of only two remaining Vampires, Alaric is forced to carry on the tradition of creating a new heir to continue the holy bloodline and keep the Kingdom at peace. But with no desire to marry a woman and the weight of isolation, he finds it increasingly difficult to see why he would want to live through such a future.
For the time being, however, one person keeps him up and out of bed each day: Adrian. As a scarred boy from the Slums working as a valet under a contract, he can only serve in the palace until Alaric's eventual wedding and coronation. But as Alaric's wedding approaches, they are left alone together to face the bleak realities of life in the Kingdom and their society.
Soon, inevitable arrangements will fall into place, and they will eventually have to part. Alaric would lose his reason to keep going, and Adrian would be left to cope with yet another loss.

But something the Kingdom had never seen before changes this. The wedding is cancelled.

Two sudden deaths within the palace haunt the entire Kingdom, and only the two boys have leads on figuring out who caused them and why. So now, this is Alaric's chance- he is finally given a purpose: To find out who the killer is and avenge those who have fallen. To flip the societal pitfalls inside-out, and expose the monarchy's flaws buried under tradition in the process. To make things right before it's too late.

Balancing relationships with duty.
Navigating grief.
Picking the right path.

The longer Alaric wades through the mystery, the more entangled he gets with something that was thought to have been destroyed years ago.

Maybe all paths would just lead to loss.
But what if there was a way to win it all?
Given the risks at hand and his own internal setbacks, Alaric is only left with one question:
How?
