Valdor and the Dragon face off; the crystal cracks slightly, but the battle reaches a new, brutal level. Up above, the team desperately holds off waves of creatures, praying that Valdor will survive.
The dragon charged forward; his footsteps thundered like a hammer striking rock. With every movement, debris rained down from the chamber’s ceiling, and the columns shook to their foundations. A red glow radiated from his chest, so bright it outshone the light of the burning torches.
Valdor gripped his sword with both hands. The aura of dragon blood enveloped him more and more tightly, but with the power came pain. His body wasn’t quite ready yet; his muscles tore, and his bones creaked as if his own strength were about to tear him apart from the inside.
“You are not my destiny…” — he rasped, taking a step forward. — “You are merely an obstacle.”
The dragon roared as it struck. Its hand, ending in a crystal blade, came crashing down. Valdor leaped back, but the blade grazed his side. Blood spurted out, and a searing aura hissed as if trying to seal the wound.
Valdor, however, did not cry out. He clenched his teeth and counterattacked with a lightning-fast thrust. The blade of his sword struck the monster’s side. Metal clashed against crystal and armor, and sparks lit up the hall.
The dragon retreated only a step before immediately attacking again. Its tail struck Valdor in the chest. The dragon’s aura cushioned part of the blow, but the force was so immense that Valdor was sent crashing backward, ricocheting off the wall with a thud.
The ground shook, and stones rained down from the ceiling. Valdor spat out blood, but he got back to his feet.
“Is that... all you've got?”
Meanwhile, the team on the surface was fighting in hell. The monsters kept coming in endless waves; their bodies piled up, but more kept arriving. Kael fought like a shield, parrying the blows; his sword was red with blood.
“Stay together!” — he shouted, pushing back yet another opponent.
Noah roared, and fire erupted from his hands. Flames engulfed him, incinerating a wave of enemies.
Arwen went into a frenzy. Her wolf form pulsed with power, her eyes glowed gold, and her movements were too fast for the human eye to follow. She slashed, bit, and tore. But the more she killed, the more her body bled from dozens of cuts.
“You won’t stop me!” she roared, lunging at three of them at once.
Mayuri was at the center. Her magic stretched across dozens of barriers. The monsters crashed into her defenses, but each successive shield grew thinner. She trembled, but she didn’t stop.
“Valdor…” — she whispered. — “Do it quickly… because we…”
Her body shuddered, but she held firm.
The dragon raised both arms and struck the ground. Red beams shot from the crystal in her chest, slicing through the air like blades. Valdor dodged, but one of the beams sliced through his arm, and another struck a pillar, causing it to explode.
The entire hall shook as if it were about to collapse.
Valdor gathered all his aura. The dragon’s power heated him from within, and his body glowed like red-hot metal. A roar burst from his throat — not human, but dragon-like.
“RAAAAAAAAH!”
The dragon froze for a moment; its red eyes flickered. Valdor seized the moment. He lunged forward, his sword engulfed in flame. The blow struck them squarely
The blade sank in, sending cracks rippling across the surface. The dragon roared, and the light exploded. The energy erupted, hurling Valdor halfway across the hall.
He lay there, trembling; his sword lay a few steps away. He was breathing heavily, but he smiled.
On the surface, the situation was just as critical. The monsters were pressing in on them with increasing force. Kael could barely stay on his feet. Noah was no longer unleashing waves of fire, but rather short bursts. Arwen was covered in blood, her eyes gleaming with wildness.
“Valdor!” — she screamed, fending off a monster. — “End this!”
Mayuri was still standing. Her barrier was protecting them one last time. With every fall, she raised another shield, but her body looked like a shadow of its former self.
“Just… a moment…” — she whispered.
Valdor crawled toward his sword. The dragon, despite the crack in its crystal heart, pressed forward. Its roar made the entire hall tremble.
Valdor grabbed the sword. The aura around him flared once more, though his body could barely hold on.
“In that case… I’ll destroy you… and that cursed source along with you!”
The dragon struck. Valdor leaped. Their forces collided right in the center of the chamber.
Light exploded.
The entire ruin shook to its foundations.
Light burst forth from the dragon’s chest. The crystal cracked with increasing intensity, yet her body continued to press forward, as if desperately defending her heart. Streams of energy poured from his wounds, resembling lava that was eating into the stone floor.
Valdor did not back down. The dragon’s aura enveloped him completely. Each of his steps resounded like a hammer blow, and his eyes blazed with fire.
“This is the end!” — he roared, plunging his sword deeper into the crystal.
The dragon howled, and fire mixed with energy burst from its maw. The blast struck Valdor, sending him flying backward. He slammed into the wall; stones rained down on him, pinning him down for a moment.
The monster staggered; the crystal was cracking. But it was still alive. It was still fighting.
Valdor, in pain, slowly crawled out from under the rubble. He spat out blood, and his face was pale, but his gaze did not waver.
“You’re stubborn…” — he raised his sword; an aura blazed around the blade.
On the surface, the battle was hell. The monsters pressed forward relentlessly. Kael, bloodied, his sword chipped from thousands of blows, fell to one knee.
“Not… yet…” — he hissed, parrying yet another blow.
Noah stood beside him; his flames were growing weaker, but his eyes burned relentlessly.
“If I’m going to die here… I’ll burn everything that stands here!”
Arwen was covered in blood; her wolf form was wavering, but she didn’t stop attacking. Every movement was desperate; every blow was a fight for a second of life.
“One more… one more!” — she roared, lunging at three more monsters.
Mayuri stood in the center. Her body trembled; her magic was unstable, being torn apart from all sides. Every attack she parried cost her a bit of her life force. Her lips whispered softly:
“Valdor… hurry…”
In the chamber beneath the ruins, Valdor gathered what little strength he had left. His aura pulsed in time with his heartbeat. The monster lunged toward him, and the ground shook.
Valdor yanked his sword from the rubble and stood his ground. His eyes glowed, and his voice turned into a roar — a deep, dragon-like roar that shook the very foundations of the ruins.
The monster hesitated for a split second. Valdor leaped. His entire body blazed, and his sword became a streak of light. He struck the crystal head-on.
An explosion followed.
Light filled the entire hall, reaching all the way to the surface. The monsters fighting the team howled; their bodies crumbled to dust, as if something had severed the bond that kept them alive.
A sudden silence fell over the surface.
Kael sank to his knees; Noah stared in disbelief at the vanishing enemies. Arwen collapsed to the ground in her human form, panting heavily. Mayuri sank to her hands.
“Valdor…” — she whispered, her eyes filling with tears.
The chamber beneath the ruins was filled with dust. The crystal had shattered into thousands of pieces, which slowly faded away like embers in a fireplace. Valdor stood in the center, his sword stuck in the ground, his entire body trembling.
He was exhausted to the point of collapse. Every muscle burned, every breath hurt. But he was alive.
“It’s… over.” — he whispered, sinking to one knee.
Footsteps echoed behind him. It was the team that had finally reached the chamber. Kael was leaning on his sword, Noah was staggering, Arwen was walking slowly, and Mayuri was practically running toward Valdor.
“Valdor!” — her voice echoed off the stone walls. She knelt beside him; her hands immediately glowed with healing magic.
Valdor opened his eyes and smiled slightly.
“I’m fine.”
Noah laughed hoarsely.
“You little bastard… you did it.”
Kael sighed heavily.
“I thought we were done for this time.”
Arwen looked at the crystal shards and the dragon’s body.
“It’s a dragon… I think we’ll get a lot of money for it.”
The team slowly made their way toward the exit. The ruins trembled, as if the place itself were collapsing after the destruction of its heart. The corridors were crumbling, stones were falling, but they pressed on, step by step.
When they finally emerged onto the surface, they saw the night sky. The stars shone brightly, and the moon illuminated the ruins. The air was cool and fresh, as if the entire place were breathing new life after a long nightmare.
Valdor stopped and looked at the city of the Empire, which loomed in the distance.
“The ruins were the beginning.” — he said quietly. — “But this is only the first step.”
Mayuri stood beside him.
Deep underground, within the ruins, something stirred. The crystal shards trembled, as if not everything had been destroyed.
Far away, in a dark hall of the Empire, a man in black armor knelt before the throne. The Emperor sat high above, his eyes burning with a red glow.
“The dragon’s heart has been destroyed, my lord.” — said the warrior.
The Emperor smiled coldly.
“So our plan has failed. That was to be expected — He has truly returned.”
The team leaves the Ruins, exhausted but stronger. The capital of the Empire looms on the horizon — their next destination. But somewhere in the shadows, new threats are already waiting.
