From Cold to Warmth

Chapter 2: The Hum

Chapter 2: The Hum

Aug 25, 2026

The classroom door behind Alexei still stood open, and Ryan Turner was frozen on the threshold, but Kingsley's heavy, unrelenting stare nailed him to the spot. The dominant of their year was staking his claim to the territory.

For Stuart, the world had shrunk to a stifling hallway and a single point within it: the fragile figure against the wall. The scent of night-blooming gardenia, thick and hypnotic, hit his lungs and burned every thought away. This wasn't just a reaction to someone else's heat. It was a crushing, total biological response. His own body, dormant for five years since his early manifestation, roared awake. True mate. His omega.

He stepped forward, blocking Alexei from the open door with his broad back. Ryan growled low from the threshold, driven by predator instinct, but Stuart didn't even turn his head. He only rolled one shoulder, and a wave of pheromones, heavy, hot Siberian cedar, crashed down over them, pinning Ryan to the floor and silencing him outright. Kingsley's pressure was absolute now.

"Stuart... Kingsley, wait, we need to call the office," Arthur Green ventured, peering out from behind Turner's shoulder. The beta teacher was breathing hard, frightened by the sheer force of the hormonal charge in the air.

Stuart ignored him and dropped to one knee in front of Alexei. The late manifestation had left him nearly unconscious: his pale face was drawn, his brown eyes half-closed, his fingers crumpling the fabric of his tailored trousers. The perfect white shirt clung to him with sweat, and his damp dark hair stuck to his forehead.

Stuart reached out, his large hand gentle despite its size, and touched Alexei's thin, trembling wrist. The contact hit him like a second jolt, and his scent surged, thick with protective instinct.

"Hey." He leaned close to Alexei's ear, his voice dropping into that low, careful whisper. There was no threat in it; if anything, a quiet alpha warmth showed through. The pack's alpha was here. "Look at me. It's over. I'm here."

Alexei shuddered faintly. The whisper vibrated through him, cutting through the choking panic of instinct.

Stuart slid one arm under his back and the other beneath his knees and lifted him. Tall as he was, Alexei felt almost weightless, all thin bones and narrow frame. His head fell against Stuart's shoulder, his back pressed to Stuart's chest.

And then Alexei felt it. Through the dense fabric of the blazer and shirt, against his own shoulder blades, he could feel Stuart's large, well-built body humming, steady and warm. The vibration wasn't flat or mechanical; it was as if a soothing tune ran deep inside him.

That low, resonant hum, something only the strongest alphas carried, washed over him like a sedative. It caught Alexei's wild pulse and pulled it into step. His ragged breathing slowly evened out, falling in with the silent song inside Stuart's chest. The panic that had gripped him moments before drained away fast, giving way to a dense, safe haze. The scent of hot wood settled over him like a smothering blanket. Alexei stopped shaking and weakly gripped the collar of the blazer, surrendering completely to the music inside his own body.

"Kingsley, you have no right to take him without protocol!" Christian Davis, the class president, finally found his nerve and stepped into the hallway, clutching a tablet in both hands. "I have to file a report—"

Stuart turned. Something cold and dark crossed his gray-blue eyes, and Christian instinctively stepped back, nearly dropping the tablet.

Stuart's voice fell, carrying a clear, vibrating threat that made every alpha nearby flinch.

"Open the door to the medical wing for me. Right now. Or that entry on your tablet is the last thing you ever write in this Academy."

The reinforced airtight door of the Omega Isolation Room clicked shut behind them with a soft hydraulic hiss. In the same instant, the climate control engaged. Sensing a critical concentration of pheromones, the panoramic glass switched to privacy mode; the smart glass frosted over, darkened, and sealed the room off from the outside world, dropping it into a deep, cool half-light. Cold air poured from vents hidden in the ceiling, the exhaust running at full power, stripping the choking excess of gardenia from the air.

"Kingsley! What's going on here? Put him down, now." Dr. Hayes, the Academy's chief physician, came in fast, his coat rustling. As a beta, he kept a clear head, but his face showed real alarm. "I just got the class president's report. Late manifestation? Step aside, I need to give him the first-phase stabilizer."

"No injections." Stuart's voice was flat and hard, filling the sterile quiet of the room. "He's eighteen. You'd wreck his hormonal system."

"The Academy has clear protocol for exactly this kind of crisis!" Hayes stepped toward the couch, pulling an auto-injector from his pocket. "You're violating medical procedure, Kingsley. Leave him and get back to class immediately."

Stuart didn't move. He only turned his head slightly, and in the half-light his eyes darkened almost to anthracite. The air went thick with the pressure of dry musk and cedar.

"My father paid for this entire wing, Dr. Hayes." The words were quiet, with an iron weight behind them. The veins on his forearms stood out from the tension. "And I know the protocol better than you do. Look at him. If you push synthetics into him now, his heart won't take it. He needs to stabilize naturally. I'm staying."

Hayes went still. He looked at Alexei, his breathing still shallow and uneven, then back at Kingsley. What stood before him wasn't just an eighteen-year-old, but a dominant alpha ready to defend what belonged to him by right of biology, teeth bared if it came to that. The force of it drove the beta doctor back a step.

"Fine." He put the injector away, giving in. "I'll log the biological stabilization in the record. You've got two hours until his parents arrive. If his readings get worse, I'm medicating him whether you like it or not."
