The shadows were the first to die. They peeled off their owners, recoiling from the killing intent exerted by The Ghost. The Domain in which Mason's powers thrived in instinctively understood that they had no refuge here.

Then, all manner of sound became extinct. Sound did not fade—it was erased.

The forest stood frozen beneath an oppressive stillness so absolute it was nightmarish.

Leaves hung motionless, their veins locked in silent tension, and branches that should have whispered and creaked instead held their breath. Birds were gone not in flight, but in absence, as if their wonderous songs had been snuffed out mid-note and discarded. Even the insects inhabiting the forest seemed to forget how to exist audibly; the air carried no buzz, chirp, or hum—only a hollow pressure that rang in Mason's head without making a sound.

Immediately following the eradication of sound, a ghastly crimson fog seeped between the trees, low to the ground at first, then rising with an debilitating dominance until trunks, branches, and leaves were stained by its supernatural hue.

It did not drift aimlessly; it ruled.

Wherever it touched, the forest bent to its unyielding authority—greens dulled into bruised maroon, bark darkened as if steeped in blood, and distance collapsed into a claustrophobic red veil. Under the crimson dominion, nature was not destroyed—it was claimed, marked, and held in silent, oppressive obedience. Paths vanished beneath the red fog's watchful eye—direction held no reasoning or logic.

Mason, The Shadow Lord, had no dominion over his powers for the first time in ages.

Fear stuck Mason with force unlike any physical wound he had ever suffered. The fear dug deep, far past his ironclad facade and power, into a memory Mason had sealed beneath years of love and companionship. The world narrowed to a suffocating stillness, the same stillness that had filled the air the night Mason watched his mother die.

Now that memory returned with brutal clarity. Mason's breath shortened. His will shook. The shadows he once controlled left their master, demonstrating his powerlessness to save anyone when it mattered—just like when his mother needed him the most.

Just the horrific reminder of that horrific night—the night when young Mason watched his mother get decapitated—brought forth a plethora of debilitating emotions, the same as of that tragic night. The same paralysis seized Mason—the same helplessness that came from the certainty that despite all the power in the world at his fingertips, Mason was powerless to protect the ones he loved.

It was to much for a child to witness the cold-blooded murder of his mother. Even now, many years later, it was an event so ingrained into his eyes that Mason can still see her head spinning in the air.

Re-experiencing the memories of that tragic event resurfaced Mason's petrified and anger filled six-year old self.

A calamity instilled itself with Mason's body, mind, and soul—one that festered with contradiction so potent that Mason temporarily became immobilized.

A biological mutation bloomed in Leon's DNA due to the influence of Abaddon's Domain.

The first sign Leon witnessed was the spasms and twitches in his fingers.

Following the grotesque spasms were eerie, fleshy crunching and grinding, signaling the deconstruction and reconstruction of Leon's arms.

A sharp, crawling pain squirmed beneath Leon's fingertips. Each of his fingernails thickened and blackened, pushing outward with a pressure that made both his hands violently tremble. The ends of Leon's fingers lengthened, curling inward as his skin grew taut, then rippled, shifting in waves as fur bristled through his pores, coarse and dark as soot. Even the air around Leon recoiled as the overwhelming scent of earth and iron rose from his changing flesh.

Finalizing Leon's transformation, the joints in his hand cracked one after another, with each pop signaling that "Leon" was overwritten by Abaddon's whims and wishes.

To be able to do this, without so much as a single touch, he must truly be a...

"...monster!"
***

An ancient entity made its entrance known to the world without so much as lifting a single finger—its presence alone began reshaping reality itself.

The Ghost radiated a mana signature so immense it felt as though the physical weight of the realm settled on Elaine's shoulders, creeping down to her spine and curling tight around both lungs. The sporatic thumping of Elaine's heartbeat roared with the intensity of a thousand drums, each thump an involuntary response to the dread that rolled off The Ghost in slow, suffocating waves. The moment these waves brushed against Elaine, an unnatural stillness fell into her mind, as color drained from the world, and every thought she held suddenly grew distant and dim.

These waves weren't like ordinary fear; they carried a hollowing sensation, a manufactured and ancient hopelessness that now infested Elaine's being. This hopelessness increased tenfold the moment The Ghost turned Its gaze towards Elaine. The minuscule act of this entity sacrificing its attention to her increased all manner of negative emotions battered Elaine's body.

"Wretched Blasphemer, drown in "|_ _ _| |_ _ _ _|'s embrace. Let go of your meaningless existence. Become a part of something worthwhile. Become born anew in my Domain. Become one of my "trophies" insect!" A calamitous voice erupted and scoured the forest with palpable will and intent, commanding that Elaine die.

Following this order, a sour heat rolled up from Elaine's stomach without warning, curling upward in a wave that stole the air in her lungs. A deep, wrenching spasm shook through Elaine's diaphragm, forcing her body to double over.

All manner of systemic order and control within Elaine's own body had collapsed with the chaos. Movements she once performed without thought now felt foreign. Each attempt to act, to choose, to do anything at all was met with a chilling surge of instinctive terror, a cold-blooded fear that slithered up Elaine's spine and strangled every spark of intention before it could form.

The fear didn't simply stop me; it claimed Elaine.

It wrapped itself around her consciousness like a constrictor snake, trapping Elaine inside this trembling, unresponsive shell. Elaine's body felt less like a vessel and more like a prison— a heavy, sack of flesh that refused to obey, refused to move, reducing every effort to a humiliating reminder of her own helplessness.

In this moment, Elaine existed only as a passenger, locked behind skin and bones, unable to convince even a single part of herself to rise, to speak, to matter.

Blessed by the Lord of Flames, Leon can tap into a vast array of mystical abilities. Powers normally beyond human comprehension come naturally to Sol Invictus Leon.

More potent flame magic? No problem!

Resistances to almost all manner of damage, attacks, and debilitating effects? Easy-peasy!

Such boons are possible via the Contract of Hearts—a supernatural agreement between two parties devoid of malice and selfishness.

Since time immemorial have mortals and the supernatural bonded together, changing the course of history in a myriad of ways. To birth a Contract of Hearts, both parties must open their hearts to each other, sincerely revealing the deepest desires of oneself to the other. Only when both contractors agree that their partner is one of pure heart and soul can a Contract of Hearts be born. Machinations annul the pure and ancient practice of trust and companionship.

The elemental spirit Leon bound himself to is the holder over the Divine Authorities of flame, passion and rebirth. No flame defies their father. Passions are incorruptible and laid bare before The Phoenix. Death means little to the Lord of Rebirth,Ifrit.

Now what in Leon's deep vault of abilities could he use to escape such a horridly helpless predicament?

"Leon, calm yourself. Envision our connection while you deploy your magic," Ifrit's wonderous voice called out.

Leon closed his eyes.

Huff!

Hooooo!

Taking a deep breathe, Leon zoned out of the material world and cleared his mind of all insignificant noise. In the dark expanse of his psyche, Leon projected a mental image of a gunmetal chain. Grasping it, Leon felt the oppressive dominance of Abaddon's domain recoil at the defiance.

Clink!

Clinnnnnk!

The rattle veers aimlessly in the cleared mental landscape as Leon reels in the chain. Simply by interacting with the Connection can Leon conjure magic with more efficiency.

Opening his eyes, Leon returns to the crimson forest with faint confidence. Laid bare on his face is a weak smile.

"Simple Domain!" Leon invoked the spell most beneficial to him.

A Simple Domain is a technique used by the weak and helpless who do not have access to a Domain of their own. It takes the core foundation of what a Domain is, simplifies it, and applies it to a small pocket of space in reality.

Now what is the foundation of a domain?

1. Have enough influence over a substantial amount of living creatures and leave a lasting impression on them.

2. The impression left behind must live true to the core beliefs, ideals, and desires of the individual.

3. Take the core principles of the "person" and manifest them into reality as a tangible phenomenon.

For Abaddon, his foundation is built upon struggle emitted by the ones he claims as his prey. The longer they struggle the more powerful he becomes. If there is more to Abaddon's domain, Leon is unaware of it. Just that alone is a damn cheat code in combat!

Conjuring space around himself, Leon enchanted the space encompassing him into ten meters of natural territory. Whilst having a simple domain up, Leon exists in a pocket of reality where Abaddon's influence would normally be eliminated.

However, he is not at the point in which such a feat is plausible.

This technique currently mitigates the sinister effects of Abaddon's domain.

The uncontrollable spasms weaken by a miniscule degree.

The fear corroding the atmosphere in its wickedness faintly dampened.

The Blood Fog pounds against the barrier erected around Leon, whispering its intent for hunger and carnage.

Fur enshrouding Leon's grotesque arms wither and plummet into the speckles of green dwelling within the ocean of blood grass.

With this singular action, Leon has slowed his demonic metamorphosis. By how much? Only time could tell.

Huffff!

Hoooooo!

Taking another deep breathe, Leon takes note of the situation. Elaine is incompacitated roughly one foot away from him. As for his other companion, that remains to be seen. The current circumstances have too many risks and unknown factors to engage in combat. Regarding my best course of action...

"You need to retreat. A pesky presence is barreling towards us," Ifrit grumbled.

Abaddon is merely troublesome to you!?

Leon scoffed.

Apparently calamitous entities such as The Ghost are simple annoyances. How wonderous.

Despite wishful thinking, combat was inevitable. The mere fact that Leon is knee-deep in Abaddon's domain spells his timely demise. Quick wits, careful calculations, and perfection was needed to avoid certain Death.

A plan began materializing in Leon's cranium. A gamble for sure, but would that matter? If he wasn't willing to attempt the impossible would there be a tomorrow?

Surely not.

The future Leon desperately desired would be snuffed out. The woman he loved would either die or become a plaything to the devil. Mason, one of his best friends, would wind up as a statistic on a casualty report.

That is not the end Leon wants, nor will it ever be. So long as Leon draws breath will this not come to pass.

Physiologically preparing himself, Leon stiffly maneuvered over to his beloved. Elaine was in critical condition. No, not critical. She was nearing Death's door. Simply dwelling within Abaddon's domain endangered her life.

The light that once twinkled in her aquamarine eyes dwindled with each fleeting moment.

Elaine's sickishly frozen skin began to turn purple.

Leon had to act fast if he wanted to save Elaine and their child.

Damn it! I hate feeling this helpless!

If only I was stronger!

With great care, Leon lifted Elaine and held her in his arms. Igniting the tip of his right pointer finger, he invoked a safe-guarding spell onto Elaine.

"With the blessing of the Flame Spirit—

No evil shall not gaze upon you,

Misfortune shall not befall upon you,

Death is a stranger and shall not impede your path,

May your journey be short and sweet, Child of the Flame!"

Receiving Ifrit's blessing, Elaine ignited with the luminance of a star. Radiant vermillion flames caressed her body, dancing with childlike joy until Elaine and the fire gradually reduced in size.

Once done, Elaine disappeared and in her place was a fist sized flame.

"Now go! Find Mason and escape!" Leon commanded the Fire Sprite.

Obeying Leon's will, the Fire Sprite swiftly vanished from his sight.

Fighting against his trembling legs, Leon stubbornly rises.

Due to the current awkward bodily proportions, Leon stands hunched over.

Both beastialized arms are elongated to the point of dragging on the terrain should Leon not lift them.

Hm?

Rain?

At a time like this?

...

Struggling against encumberment, Leon dared himself to gaze upon the sky, and that he did.

?

Unknowist to both Leon and Ifrit, the calamitous horror that had trailed Leon and his party now stood directly behind him.

That is, until now.

A gapping black pit equipped with a thousand combat knives towered above Leon. Pouring out of said black hole, violet sludge enveloped Leon's entire body. Two enormous maroon stars ignited above the void, meeting his gaze.

No.

Those aren't knives—there're teeth!

As for the sludge—saliva!

Those are... eyes!

"Boo!" The death trap of razor sharp teeth whirled, sawing at the air as the abomination spoke.

Pop!

In the next moment, a fleshy explosion occured. Leon's head exploded—it popped like a balloon.

Plat!

Leon's corpse hit the floor.

That was how Leon died for the first of many times.
