# PSYCHIC HARVEST
### Chapter 2: Thirty Days Part 2

**Day 27.**

Sato called him into the workshop without explanation, which by now Ethan had learned meant something was about to change.

"Okoro tells me you stopped freezing around day fifteen," Sato said, not looking up from whatever fine, delicate work he was doing at the bench. "Reyes tells me you ask good questions. Priya tells me you're finally sleeping." He set down his tools and turned, studying Ethan the way he had on the first night — searching, careful, unhurried. "I tell myself these things matter more than raw courage. Usually I am right."

"Is this the part where you teach me to throw?" Ethan asked.

"Almost." Sato reached into the same drawer as before and set the small black device on the bench — the Tether, though he still hadn't called it that out loud to Ethan directly, and Ethan still only half-understood the name from what Reyes had mentioned in passing. "First, you need to understand what you're choosing before you choose it. This is not a weapon, whatever it looks like. It is a promise you make to something that will hold you to it whether you deserve to be held to it or not."

He held it out. Ethan didn't take it yet.

"There's a woman here," Ethan said slowly. "Naomi. Five links."

Something shifted, briefly, behind Sato's eyes — old grief, carefully managed. "Ah. You've seen her, then."

"What happened to her?"

"That," Sato said, "is her story, not mine. Ask her yourself, someday, if she ever decides you've earned it." He nudged the Tether an inch closer across the bench. "For now. Are you ready?"

Ethan thought about the clearing. The ring of eyes. The bodies curled up in the mud, arms wrapped around their own knees. He thought about his family, even relatives he'd hadn't seen in years and not having the option to change that, and how Okoro told him time and time again to *react quickly* in this place instead of simply observing it. It was certainly time to act, he was done just noticing things.

He picked up the Tether.

It was lighter than it looked, same as the first time. This time, though, it didn't feel like holding a stranger's tool. It felt like holding a decision.

"Yes," Ethan said.

**Day 30.**

They took him out past the eastern tree line at dawn, just Sato, Okoro, and Reyes, into a stretch of dense low forest the settlement used specifically for first-link expeditions — populated, Sato explained, mostly by Class I and low Class II Vareth, manageable enough that a newcomer's first throw wasn't also potentially their last.

"You will feel it before you see it, if you have learned anything these thirty days," Sato said, walking a half-step behind him.

They walked for nearly two hours before Ethan felt anything at all — and when he did, it wasn't the cold dread he'd braced for. It was something smaller. Curious. A faint, prickling attention that didn't carry the hungry weight of the thing that had hunted him on day one.

He held up a fist, the way he'd seen Okoro do a dozen times in drills, and the group stopped.

"There," Ethan said quietly, nodding toward a cluster of low, flowering underbrush that hadn't moved in the last thirty seconds despite a breeze that should have stirred it.

Reyes's mouth twitched — approval, carefully hidden.

Ethan crept closer, slow, breath controlled, and the underbrush shifted — not fleeing, not attacking, just *watching* him with an attention that felt almost playful. And then he saw it properly for the first time: small, round-bodied, roughly the size of a large cat, covered in dense fur that looked shockingly, almost comically soft, a pale violet shading toward sickly yellow-green at the edges. Big, dark, wide-set eyes blinked at him with an expression that could only be described as curious innocence. Its stubby tail puffed, just slightly, at the sight of him.

Every instinct Ethan had spent thirty days sharpening screamed one word at him, and it wasn't *danger.*

It was *adorable.*

"Careful" Okoro said, low and immediate, catching the look on Ethan's face. "That things much more dangerous than it looks."

"It's a Puffshade line," Sato added, quiet and precise, the tone he used for anything he considered important. "Poison-adjacent. It looks harmless because looking harmless *is* the weapon. It doesn't need to be fast or strong. It only needs you to get close enough to want to touch it."

Ethan looked at it — at the impossibly soft-looking fur, the wide trusting eyes, the small puffed tail — and understood, with the same cold clarity that had once told him he was being hunted, that everyone in this clearing was completely right, this creature would eat him given the chance.

He thought about the Hollowmaw. The thing that had nearly killed him by turning his own fear into food. He thought, with something that surprised him by how sharp and immediate it was, that there was a kind of justice in this — in choosing, deliberately, a creature whose entire nature ran in the opposite direction. Not fear as a weapon. The *absence* of fear, weaponized instead.

"I want this one," Ethan said.

Reyes exhaled something between a laugh and a sigh. "Of course you do."

"You understand the risk," Sato said — not a question, a final check. "It resists. Some do. If it fights the link, you may feel the failure as keenly as it does."

Ethan turned the Tether over once in his hand, feeling its slight, patient weight, and thought about thirty days of struggling with freezing in place instead of reacting fast enough, and how Reyes told him you don't get rid of what happened to you, you just learn to carry it.

He threw.

The Tether left his hand in a clean, silent arc, and for one suspended half-second Ethan thought he'd overthrown it entirely — and then it *bent,* impossibly, curving through the air toward the small violet shape with a certainty that had nothing to do with his aim and everything to do with whatever the device could sense that he couldn't.

The Puffshade didn't run. It froze, wide-eyed, tail puffing in genuine alarm this time, an instant before the Tether struck home against its side.

For a moment, nothing happened. Then the creature let out a sound — not quite a cry, not quite a chirp, something in between that Ethan felt as much as heard, a spike of pure startled panic that hit him behind the eyes like a static shock.

*It's fighting,* Ethan realized, and for one terrible second he thought he was about to lose it, feel the whole attempt collapse the way Sato had warned him it might.

Then, just as suddenly, the panic behind his eyes dissolved into something else entirely — small, uncertain, reaching. Not fear anymore. Something closer to a question.

*Is this — safe?*

He didn't hear the words. He felt the shape of them, the way he'd felt the Hollowmaw's hunger in the clearing on day one, except this time the sensation wasn't horror. It was almost unbearably gentle.

"Yes," Ethan said out loud, though he wasn't entirely sure who he was answering — the creature, or himself. "Yeah. It's safe."

The Puffshade's tail dropped from its startled puff into something looser, softer. It took one small, hesitant step toward him across the underbrush, and Ethan felt the link settle into place behind his own ribs like a held breath finally released — a warmth that hadn't been there a minute ago, small and strange and entirely his.

Behind him, Reyes let out a low whistle. "Well," she said. "That's new."

"Most first links take longer to calm," Okoro said, sounding almost suspicious of how easy it had looked.

Sato said nothing for a long moment, watching the small violet creature settle at Ethan's feet with an expression Ethan couldn't quite read — somewhere between scientific fascination and something gentler, older, harder to name... A hint of.. sadness?

"Interesting," Sato finally said. "Though your wrong about one thing Reyes, it's the second time this has happened.. not the first"

Ethan knelt down slowly, and the Puffshade allowed itself to be scratched behind one round ear, leaning into his hand with a full-body shiver of contentment that felt, absurdly, like the single safest thing that had happened to him since he'd arrived in this world.

"I have no idea what to name you," he admitted quietly.

The creature blinked up at him, and for just a moment, Ethan could have sworn he felt something that was almost — *almost* — amusement.

*Take your time,* it seemed to say, without words, the way everything in this world said everything. *We have a while.*

Behind him, the jungle stretched on, endless and green and full of things that were still, for now, stronger than he was.

But for the first time since the world had torn open beneath his feet, Ethan Cole didn't feel like the one being hunted.
