# PSYCHIC HARVEST
### Chapter 6: A Minute to Talk

---

"A few things worth talking about," Ethan repeated, keeping his voice level. "Such as?"

"Such as what you're actually doing with all that talent." Vera's smile didn't waver, warm and unhurried, like they had all the time in the world and she wanted him to feel that too. "Playing errand boy for a settlement that made you wait thirty days just to earn the right to defend yourself. There's faster ways to grow, Ethan. Better ones."

Beside him, Dallin's weight shifted, subtle but deliberate — a fighter's stance settling in under casual clothes.

"Dallin," the quiet man said, stepping forward at last, easy and unbothered, like he was simply making conversation. "Cole. Why don't you and I give them a minute."

It wasn't a question. It wasn't quite a threat either — phrased soft, reasonable, deniable, the kind of sentence that could be repeated back to a settlement council with a straight face and sound like nothing at all. But Ethan felt Dallin go very still beside him, the particular stillness of someone doing fast, silent math about angles and distance.

"I don't think so," Dallin said pleasantly.

"Wasn't really a request." Cole's tone stayed just as mild. "Just a minute. Nobody's in a hurry."

That was when Ethan noticed the road wasn't empty.

It hadn't been the whole time.

A shape uncoiled from the tall grass at the road's edge, slow and unhurried — something long and low that Ethan's mind first read as a discarded strap before it moved again and he understood, with a cold drop in his stomach, that it had never been rope at all. Behind Vera, low brush that should have held nothing shifted once, twice, and went still in a shape that was somehow worse for how ordinary it looked — not a monster crouched to strike, just an animal's outline, patient, waiting to be told.

*They were already here,* Ethan thought, his own pattern-recognition instinct screaming the realization a half-second too late to be useful. *Before Vera ever said a word. This was never a conversation between four people. It was always six.*

"Careful," Vera said, gently, watching his face change. "Nobody wants this to go anywhere ugly. This is just me being honest about the numbers, so you understand exactly how much good faith I'm operating in by not using them."

---

Mura's tail had gone flat against Ethan's shoulder, no puff left in it at all — the same total stillness Ethan remembered from a jungle clearing weeks that felt like a lifetime ago, except this time it wasn't fear radiating off the small creature. It was something closer to fury, restrained, coiled tight and waiting on Ethan's word.

*Not yet,* Ethan thought toward him, deliberate, and felt Mura's tension hold rather than break.

"You brought four Vareth to have a conversation," Ethan said aloud, keeping his voice steadier than he felt. "That's not honesty."

"It's insurance," Cole said, unbothered, still watching Dallin with the patient attention of a man counting exactly how fast the other could move if it came to that. "Same as your friend here keeping his weight on the balls of his feet since the second we said hello. We're not so different, Ethan. Everybody in this world carries more than they show. We're just less coy about it." Dallin was suddenly pushed back firmly by Cole, and though Dallin was experienced, Cole seemed to weaken him with his touch...

"Is he a linker?" Ethan thought and while he was considering everything he knew about Vareth elemental traits, It wasn't long till Cole pushed Dallin out of ear shot. Ethan wasn't too worried though since Dallins Vareth was quick and muras poison wouldn't be hindered by Dallin being close.

Something enormous shifted in the low brush behind Vera — not attacking, just uncoiling, muscle and shadow rearranging into something leaner and more purposeful than it had been a moment before, and Ethan felt the air itself seem to hold its breath around it.

"That," Vera said, following his gaze with something almost like fondness, "doesn't need to introduce itself unless you make it necessary. I'd genuinely rather it didn't. I like you, Ethan. I think you're smarter than the settlement that's been handing you chores instead of answers."

"You don't know anything about what Haven's given me," Ethan said, and was surprised by how much heat had crept into his own voice.

"I know they made you wait a month to defend yourself while things like what almost got you on day one were still out there. And that was generous of them by their standards, the process is normally two months. Imagine if you had to wait that long... " Vera's tone never sharpened, never lost its warmth, which was somehow worse than if it had. "I know you cleared a Kettholme contract today that Haven's own patrols didn't think was worth their time. I know you asked Sato for freedom two weeks ago and he offered you a patrol schedule instead." A small, almost sympathetic tilt of her head. "We're offering the thing you actually need. Resources. No waiting. No one telling you which jobs matter enough to take. You want to find a way home? you won't get that with Sato, he's made his peace with this world. "

Ethan felt the shape of the pitch land exactly where it was aimed — close enough to what he wanted that for one unsteady second, he had to actually think about the answer instead of simply knowing it.
She continued as if on cue, like she knew what was going through his head. "Everything you achieved on earth is gone Ethan and Sato only cares about cohabitation with beasts that would eat you if given the chance. Your 26 and should be taking advantage of your credentials you worked so hard for back home, not running errands till your eaten.. did you know that Ethan? Your doomed to be eaten by your own Verith once you get too old and your cognitive functions begin to weaken.. they will eat you.

*Is that really true?*  He thought, looking towards Dallin who was just out of ear shot of Veras now soft spoken words almost tender. He looked at her face and could see.. sympathy? No.. when looking at her eyes he could see fear, she was also afraid though she hid it well.

*That's the trick,* he realized, cold clarity cutting through the unease the way it always did when he needed it most. *She's not lying about what I want. She's just lying about what this actually is.*

He thought about Mura, still and coiled and furious against his shoulder, two months of a bond neither of them had rushed. He thought about Sato in the workshop, patient, explaining a Tether was a promise, not a weapon. He thought about a Thistlebound that had chosen to walk away rather than fight a battle it couldn't win, and how much that had taught him about restraint being its own kind of strength.

"No," Ethan said.

Vera's sympathetic expression didn't falter, but something behind her eyes recalculated, quick and quiet. "No to the offer, or no to hearing more of it?"

"No to both." Ethan held her gaze, steady. "I don't know exactly what you are yet. But I know four hidden creatures and a soft opening line isn't how good-faith offers usually start. Whatever you're actually selling, I'm not buying it standing in the road with my friend outnumbered."

For a long moment, nobody moved. Somewhere behind Vera, the low shape in the brush shifted its weight, patient, waiting on a word that didn't come.

Then Vera laughed — short, genuine, almost delighted, like he'd passed some private test she hadn't expected him to.

"Careful and shrewd," she said, glancing at Cole. "No wonder Kettholme's contract only took him three weeks to earn." She looked back at Ethan, and for just a moment the warmth in her expression seemed almost real, almost regretful. "Fine. No hard feelings. The offer doesn't expire, if you ever change your mind — and for what it's worth, I hope you don't need to... But I suggest you stay vigilant, this world has more dangers than hungry Vareth." She pressed a red capsule into Ethan's hand and whispered "swallow this if you are ready to talk, and I'll come personally."

She stepped back, unhurried, and the shapes in the brush retreated with her — not fleeing, simply obeying, folding back into stillness as easily as they'd appeared. Cole held Dallin's gaze one beat longer than necessary, something unreadable passing between two men who'd clearly measured each other and come away with a grudging kind of respect, before he turned and followed her without another word.

In a handful of seconds, the road was simply a road again — quiet, ordinary, as if nothing had happened at all.

"You okay?" Dallin asked quietly, finally letting his stance ease.

"I don't know yet." Ethan let out a breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding, and felt Mura's tail slowly, cautiously begin to unwind against his neck. "Whoever they were, they knew too much." He looked down the empty road where Vera and Cole had vanished as easily as they'd appeared. "That's not a coincidence."

Dallin's jaw tightened. "We need to tell Sato. Tonight."

Ethan nodded, already turning back toward the road home, notebook practically writing itself in his mind before he set pencil to paper on the way — * Vera and Cole, four creatures, discreet by design, coordinated approach and retreat, information reach into Havens linkers background information and very recent activity aka: location and jobs accepted = real time updated information* — Ethan understood, with the same cold clarity that had carried him through every dangerous moment since the day the world first tore open beneath his feet, that whatever he'd just said no to wasn't finished with him yet.

Flora on this world still produces fruits, vegetables, and herbs with real nutritional content — but because native creatures don't normally need to physically consume anything to survive (they feed psychically), produce affects them like a narcotic rather than food.

As a result, most fruits and vegetables are far sweeter than their Earth equivalents — a small but consistent sensory detail (a plain root vegetable tasting like candy, etc.).

human agriculture may be used as leverage/trade/bribery with Vareth; sweet produce as a lure or subdual tool; possible overconsumption/addiction risk for creatures exposed to it.
