He didn’t touch me right away.

He just stood there, watching. Not in the way men usually watched—hungry, restless, impatient for the main event—but with the slow, analytical patience of someone about to disarm a bomb. I felt the heat rising in my skin, a low hum of dread and anticipation. Every instinct screamed to feign sickness, to get to the bathroom, to abort the mission before he could parse me down to my component parts and find the one that didn’t belong.

He came forward, unhurried. The mattress shifted as he put one knee up, and then he was leaning over me, bracing himself with an arm on either side of my shoulders. The white of his shirt was so bright in the lamplight it seemed almost radioactive. I could see the shadows of his collarbones under the fabric, the darker line where his chest met the sternum. The scent of him—cologne and something sharper, medicinal, underneath—flooded my head, and for a second I forgot how to breathe.

He didn’t start with the obvious. No greedy hands to tits, no dive for the crotch, nothing rote. Instead, he ran his palm along my left arm, slow from the wrist up to the biceps, then down again, like he was mapping nerve endings for a medical study. His skin was warm and dry, the touch featherlight, but the message was clear: I was not being seduced. I was being learned.

He did the same to my other arm, his fingertips lingering at the hollow inside my elbow. He found the old scar there—a thin white line from a high school incident with a mango—and traced it with his thumb, cataloging the imperfection without breaking his rhythm.

I could feel the flush up my neck, not just from arousal but embarrassment. I wasn’t used to anyone noticing scars, or freckles, or the tiny raised bumps from years of anxiety and sunburns. He noted each one, the pad of his thumb soft but his gaze sharp, never missing a single flinch.

He moved next to my face, the back of his knuckle stroking my cheek, down the jaw, then up to the temple. My hair stuck in uneven clumps from sweat and the way I’d pressed my head into the pillow earlier. He smoothed it, then ran a fingertip along my hairline, stopping at the tiny divot in my right eyebrow—a gift from a childhood fall off a neighbor’s trampoline.

He didn’t say anything, just watched as my eyes fluttered at the sensation. I wanted to squirm away, but also wanted more. I was acutely aware of the fact that, despite his proximity, he wasn’t breathing hard. He wasn’t even flushed. He was watching for data, not drama.

He trailed his hand down my neck, tracing the collarbone, then hovered over the strap of the black lace bra. He didn’t tug or snap it—just pressed a finger under the band, letting the elasticity bite his skin, then released it with a practiced flick. It made the tiniest sound, but I felt it in my teeth.

Then, a step closer: his hand splayed over my ribs, palm flat, fingers spread as if to count each individual bone. My heart thudded against the inside of my chest, so hard I was sure he could feel it. He watched my face, then pressed down, not enough to hurt but enough to say: I can do whatever I want. I am doing it.

He moved lower, palm skating over my stomach, slow and searching. I sucked in reflexively, but he pressed his hand firmer, flattening me to the mattress. He let his thumb rest just above the line of my panties, then drummed the rest of his fingers along the skin below my navel.

This time, the tension spiked so fast I almost yelped. My whole abdomen trembled, the muscles flinching under the touch. He noticed. He returned to that spot three more times, each time more gently, until the area was humming with sensation and I was certain I’d die if he didn’t move on soon.

He did. He left the edge of my underwear alone, instead using both hands to guide my thighs apart until my knees were level with my hips. The air was cold on my inner legs, sending a shiver up my spine. He paused, fingers playing in the hollow behind my right knee, then shifted to the other, his touch almost reverent. I tried to watch him, but my eyelids kept dropping shut, vision flickering out every time he found a new spot to ignite.

He worked his way up, palms tracing the inside of my thighs, then switching to the backs—lifting, kneading, pinching just enough to wake up nerves I didn’t know I had. At the top of my thigh, just where the lace bit into soft skin, he traced a circle. My lungs had forgotten what to do, and the exhale came out shaky and too loud. He repeated the motion, then the next, a pattern developing: touch, pause, repeat. Each time, the expectation built, until my hips started to twitch up to meet his hand of their own accord.

That was when I realized: I’d lost the game. I’d been so careful, for so many years, to manage my body. To make every touch something I permitted, every pleasure a calculated, willed thing. Now, my body was way out ahead of my brain, hips rising for more before I could decide if it was allowed.

He didn’t comment. He didn’t smirk or say anything about how wet I was. The soaked cotton of my underwear was a stark, cold fact against my skin, made more acute by the air. He just cataloged the data, then shifted to kneeling on the mattress, one knee between my legs, both hands braced at my hips.

He hooked his thumbs under the band of my panties and peeled them down, slow and careful, like removing evidence from a crime scene. He let them rest at my knees, then leaned down, face close enough to my pelvis that I could feel the heat of his breath.

He didn’t dive in. He started at my hip, mouth pressed against the top ridge of bone, then inched down, kissing every inch of skin from hipbone to the start of my thigh. He alternated sides, never symmetrical, always keeping me off-balance. His stubble scratched, then soothed. When he finally dipped his head between my legs, he did it with the slow, inexorable patience of someone for whom the act was as interesting as the result.

He ran his tongue up the seam of me, not lingering, just mapping. Then again, this time pausing at the top, tongue circling but not pressing in. He did this again, and again, until my hips lifted off the bed to chase his mouth. He put one hand on my hip, flat and heavy, to anchor me in place. I moaned—a tiny, pitiful thing—and he glanced up, eyes red and dilated, and said, “Hold still.”

It wasn’t a request. I did my best, but every muscle in my body wanted to flex, arch, wrap around his shoulders, and pull him in. He kept the pressure light, never giving me what I thought I wanted, just flicking his tongue here, then there, until the need built to a tight, trembling peak.

He brought me to the edge, then backed off. I tried to focus on the ceiling, to breathe slowly, but the sensation had already crested past any point where thinking could reach it. He waited, hand on my thigh, and when the trembling subsided, he started again—slow, controlled, always just enough.

The third time, I couldn’t take it. I let out a sound—a low, guttered thing, not even a word—and he smiled into my skin, almost triumphant but also, weirdly, vulnerable. Like he’d been waiting for that sound all night.

He changed tack then, letting his mouth work with more pressure, more intention. The heat exploded behind my eyes, every thought atomized. I arched up, hands fisted in the duvet, and came apart in slow, terrible increments—relief first, then shame close behind it, and underneath both of them something I didn't have a name for.

The world went white for a second. I felt the wet on my thighs, the sweat on my belly, the claw marks of my own fingernails in the sheets. I was panting, chest heaving, and when my vision came back, he was still kneeling over me, one hand resting on my hip, the other braced on the mattress. He watched me, expression calm but eyes wide, waiting for me to surface.

When I could move again, I let my head fall to the side. I didn’t want to look at him. I didn’t want to see what it looked like, all my composure in pieces.

He ran a hand through my hair, gentle this time, and leaned down to kiss the corner of my mouth. It was soft, almost apologetic.
