I stared at the tiny screen and thought of all the good times I've had with my little sister, not very little anymore... bring...bring...briiing. The phone continued ringing and ringing, but I didn't pick it up. Chloe was going to have to deal with her depression by herself.
"Please leave a message after the tone...beeeep...Jayden..."
She was sobbing again. I heard her sniff and blow her nose loudly.
"I'm so sorry about yesterday...I went to a club, and, and...it didn't end well. I'm sorry about my whole life Jayden..."
Her voice cracked and the line crackled.
"Not just my whole life...but Jessica's too. I really, really didn't mean it. I swear to God. Jayden...I've decided...I've decided..."
She sucked in a breath, and her voice softened.
"I'll even turn myself into the police if that's what it takes for you to believe me..."
"Yeah, right!" I yelled at the phone, throwing it onto the table. As if.
"You don't have to forgive me, Jayden...Not when I can't even forgive myself..."
Her voice was a soft whisper as I stormed out of the room, but I heard it, and I bet she heard herself, too, because she suddenly stopped and there was a beep before the message ended. She had just admitted that she had done it.
