"Jayden. It has to be Jay."
She sounded exasperated, but kind of excited.
Suddenly, I noticed how much I had missed her voice, and it's only been two weeks.
"Yes...it is. Wassup?"
I attempted to sound chill, but I knew it all came out strained. It reminded me of the time when this bully in grade 4 forced me to apologize for running faster than him. That was stupid.
"Everything. Everything, Jayden. Everything...that...nevermind. Okay, I've got this. I'm escaping. I just needed to tell you, even though I know you won't approve. I can't Jay. You wouldn't understand, but I can't. I can't be penalized for something I didn't even do. Look, you'll see. Just...nevermind. Anyways, bye."
She seemed hesitant to hang up, because she never did, and I didn't either. I didn't know if she was waiting for me to say bye, but it was like a battle to see who would last the longest. The line just kept humming and humming, until finally, Chloe broke it.
"Wait!"
I didn't try to hide my snort.
"That's what I've been doing for the last two minutes."
She laughed dryly and continued.
"I forgot to tell you. I have a partner in crime. His name's Ky. It's just...whatever, just so you know, all right? Okay, so, I guess this is goodbye..."
She hung up right away, and left me hanging in the corner of the office, wondering if this girl was for real. This innocent, innocent girl...
