My heart was racing, and so was the car. I was surprised that I still wasn't caught, yet. I whisked my phone from the cup holder, and stared at the screen for the millionth time, hoping for an impossible message to pop-up. But, nothing came, even after my palm started sweating and drenching the phone, after crushing it in my hand for two whole minutes.
I swiped the screen, and the messages app was already opened.
"Chloe...?"
My voice was unsure and barely audible. I knew it was a bad idea to send that voicemail, in case the phone was in someone else's hands. Fortunately, what came next was the complete opposite.
"My goodness, Jayden! You kept me waiting for so long. We were waiting for you to send something so that we can be sure it was all clear. Man..."
She trailed off at the end, but I was just so relieved to hear her "innocent" voice, again.
"You have no idea...Where are you?"
I sighed before finally sending the voicemail.
"Nowhere good. Back in juvie..."
Her voice held a lightness in it, and just as she finished the voicemail, I heard a giggle, which totally gave away the awful prank.
"If you're gonna prank me, then at least try."
My voice sounded harsh and different, but that was probably because of how frustrated and stressed I was. Come to think of it, why would she be pranking me in the middle of this crisis? Unless it was all a joke?
"I'm sorry. It's just...look, I know it's awful...Stop it, Ky, what are you doing...?"
I heard some shuffling, and then the voice mail ended. A few seconds later, she sent another one.
"I'm dead this time. Intersection."
