It had been a cold, rainy October day when a woman left a small bundle outside the orphanage.
The baby girl in the bundle was fast asleep, clinging to her mother. She was small for a one year old, and squimmed as the rain thundered down. The woman was young, with dark hair pulled into a messy bun and dark circles under her cloudy emerald ghreen eyes. She wiped away a few stray tears, then gently set down the child. She whimpered. For a moment, the woman nearly cried again and scooped the child back into her arms.
But she couldn't.
He would come for her soon, she knew.
There was no telling what would happen to her if she didn't do this. She kissed the girl's cheek, ignoring her cries, and pounded on the door. She whispered, "I love you, Emmily," before disappearing into the rain.
The door cracked open. An older lady peeked out, immediately freezing at the sight of the child reaching out into the distance, screaming. She scooped her up, looking around for someone.
Then she took the girl inside and locked the door behind her, as the child's mother finally let her tears come.
