Saturday morning the house felt empty as Nik walked into the kitchen, he noticed a note on the Fridge and read it.
“Morning sweetie, since your father was working so hard I wanted to get a second job for myself. This year will be grand I just know it. I'll be home around nighttime, dinner is already made you just have to heat it up. ~ Much love, Mom ~”
Nik parked his bike. "Oh man...this is messed up. Now, I made mom worry and get a second job...I'm so useless", he sighed entering the library. The inside of the building was full of books, movies and computers. He went by the front desk where the librarian was sitting.
"Can I help you young man?" said the woman.
Nik rubbed his neck. "I was wondering do you have any books on trees and plants? Also, can I use a computer, please.”
He watched her type something in on the computer. "I'm at a dead end", Nik thought. “Hope I can find more information”. The librarian gave him a computer number as he went over to the computer and logged in. The search engine smoogle appeared as he typed in trees with purple leaves, 10 results came up, after the third link he clicked on the fourth one and began reading.
The Jacaranda Mimosifolia tree, better known as the Purple spawn of the 2.7. BC era was told to bring good fortune, people, including farmers, use to plant this noble wonder during festivals and harvests.
"Hey Nik, what you looking at?" said a voice.
He turned and saw Bailey, she was in her roller gear. "Trying to find this book but I don't think the library has it.”
Bailey took a closer look at the screen. "I know that book".
"You do?" Nik blinked.
"Yeah. My mom's a flourish, so she has all kinds of tree and plant books I can let you borrow one if you want?" said Bailey.
His face lit up. "Really?"
"Sure, it's the least I can do for getting your sketchbook taken away", she smiled.
"Here's your books", said the librarian. "I'm afraid we don't have the type of book your looking for".
"Thanks anyway, Mrs."
Nik followed Bailey to her house. She opened the silver gate that surround her yard, he watched as she went to her porch and opened the door. "Come in, don't be shy", she shrugged as he went inside. "My room is just through this corridor.” They heard a sound coming from the backyard.
"My mom must be back earlier", Bailey smiled. Nik followed her to the backyard where a medium sized woman was sitting on the grass, wearing gloves and a big sun hat; she had tan skin, curly brown hair and hazel eyes.
"Mom", Bailey called out.
"Hi buggy, who's your little friend?" she smiled.
This is my friend Nik from school I was wondering could he borrow a book of ours? Bailey asked.
"Sure, but what for?" she asked.
Bailey turned to Nik. "It's for science and the library didn't have the book I was looking for", he lied.
"I kinda promised him since I got his sketchbook taken away", Bailey confessed.
"So this is the boy", she got up and walked to her study were tons of books sat on the shelf, the book was red with white seals and the title read, Exotic Soil. Nik watched her write something down before handing the book over.
"I wrote the name of the book and your name, so I won't forget", she explained.
"I promise I'll return it", he told Bailey's mom. "Thanks Bailey, you really helped me out.”
( Nik’s House )
When Nik got home, he went straight to his room turning on the light as he sat at his desk; he opened the book to a page called Jacaranda and began reading.
The Purple spawn became popular because of its beauty and symbolic meaning, now this tree is considered scarce.
Nik felt numb. "This feeling again? Wait, if it was that long ago, Ms. Sphinx must be like 700, but she doesn't look that old.” He continued reading.
There are very few given this day and age, you can possibly find a Spawn in reserved meadows or vast grasslands.
"So, there scarce and you can only find them in open spaces, seems impossible but I'm not giving up. I'm gonna find that tree if its the last thing I do.”
The door creaked open. "Son?”
Nik closed the book and got up, a tall man with pale skin and light brown hair appeared. "Hey Dad.” There were bags under his eyes from the long hours he worked.
He walked in and sat on the bed. "How's school going?"
Nik shrugged. "School's been pretty....interesting, keeping up with my homework and hanging out with my friends.”
He nodded. "Good. Glad to know your keeping up with your studies.” He got up and placed his hand on Nik’s shoulder. "Don't worry son, this year will be one to remember.”
